DVD and Blu-Ray Sales Nearly Halved Over Five Years, MPAA Report Says

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Ars Technica: In its annual Theatrical Home Entertainment Market Environment report, the Motion Picture Association of America described an immensely sharp drop-off of physical media sales over the past five years. According to the data, which was obtained from DEG and IHS Markit, global sales of video disc formats (which in this context means DVD, Blu-ray, and UltraHD Blu-ray) were $25.2 billion in 2014 but only $13.1 in 2018. Did All This Pirated 4K Content Leak From iTunes?

Many file sharers want the highest quality copy of a film they can find, and until recently, those would most often come from ripping a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc. Links to these files are clearly labeled as such, but a few weeks ago a 2160P copy of Aquaman leaked onto the internet claiming it instead originated from an…Read more...

Xbox One S is reportedly getting a disc-free version in May

The writing has been on the wall for physical media for a while now. In May, Microsoft is reportedly set to hammer another nail into that coffin with the launch of the Xbox One S All-Digital. As advertised, the latest version of the console will drop the Blu-Ray drive, in favor of an all downloadable experience. Rumors about the XOSAD have been floating around since last year — when the console still went by the decidedly Top Gunny name of “Maverick.” A new report from Window Central offers more...

Zombillénium – review

Directors: Arthur de Pins & Alexis Ducord Release date: 2017 Contains spoilers Based on a graphic novel series by Arthur de Pins, this French animation tore me slightly – I recognised the fact that it was limited in character development and didn’t seem to know whether it wanted to be aimed at families or adults (some of the industrial aspects probably would go over a child’s head for instance) but at the same time I rather enjoyed it for what it was. It certainly made me want to read the graph...

Mary Poppins Returns Hits Digital & Movies Anywhere March 12th – 4K Ultra, Blu-Ray & DVD March 19th

The fact that Mary Poppins Returns managed to land as one of the year’s best films was probably as much a surprise to many as it was a joyous relief to others. You would be hard-pressed to imagine a sequel with more potential to fall apart, or a bigger cultural identity to live up to. Rob Marshall at the helm helped alleviate some fears, but this was a film that made it impossible to get comfortable going in for fans of the original. Now, the must-see family film of the year is heade...

Sorry, Warner Bros. Isn’t Playing Your Silly “Remove the Rat from ‘The Departed’ Game”, Internet

The collective Internet hive-mind had themselves a good laugh over a recently launched Kickstarter. That Kickstarter’s aim? To remove the rat that scurries across the frame at the end of Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning crime flick The Departed. Hilarious, right? Well, Warner Bros. doesn’t think so. Much like Mark Wahlberg at the end of The Departed, the studio put on a track suit, latex gloves and paper booties and then put a bullet in the Kickstarter page’s head. Or, more accurately, they shut...
