Lou Reed Concert Film Berlin Streaming Free Online for the Next Week Last laughs can be sweet, and according to music journalist, Anthony DeCurtis, his friend, the late Lou Reed, “reveled” in the critical drubbing that greeted his 3rd solo album, 1973’s Berlin. Not immediately, however. Berlin, which followed hard on the heels of Reed’s widely adored Transformer, had a painful, protracted delivery. This was due in part due to RCA execs getting cold feet about releasing Reed’s grim concept record as a double albu...

More Rock Opera Reviews

Over the last couple of months, I've posted several new rock opera reviews over at These include: Crack The Sky - Machine (2010)The best rock band you've never heard of with one of their best albums ever. CTS combines the best elements of the Beatles, Pink Floyd and Cheap Trick. And they're still recording and touring after 40 years. Green Day - American Idiot (2004)One of the rare rock operas that actually accelerated a band's career. It's a great album ...

Here’s Who A Bunch Of Musicians Donated To In The 2020 Democratic Primary

Presidential candidates have filed fundraising reports for the first three months of the 2020 campaign! This information has presumably inspired heated debate about each candidate’s momentum and viability and other vague topics, though we have not read any of the articles, so you will have to search elsewhere for that stuff. Classic Chords #25 – Another Chord on the Wall

I’ve featured Dave Gilmour’s guitar chords before in the Classic Chords series, specifically, the arpeggiated G-min-13 (Gm13) that opens Shine on You Crazy Diamond, the homage to erstwhile and founding member Syd Barrett who was the one who roped in Gilmour all those years ago. Another iconic song from the band, the one that held The Police off the Xmas Number One slot in the UK as the last dying embers of the punk era that was to eradicate the rock dinosaurs faded: “Another Brick in the Wall (P...

Louise Goffin: "I'm Paying Homage to Everything I've Ever Loved"

None Thirty-nine years after she made her first album, the vibrant, slightly pugnacious Kid Blue (Asylum, 1979), Louise Goffin is back with a new one, All These Hellos. It's been a career of overcoming hurdles, living down (as well as up to) the expectations that come with music industry parentage, sometimes taking a step to one side and playing for other people (Bryan Ferry, Tears For Fears), and then coming back center-stage with another strong album. Sometimes, her albums struggle to get...

How Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” Was Born From an Argument Between Roger Waters & David Gilmour

Retrospectives of Pink Floyd tend to devolve into rehashing fights between Roger Waters and David Gilmour, but there’s good reason for that. Some of the band’s best work came out of this personal and creative tension, especially their most beloved song, “Comfortably Numb,” which, as we know it, emerged as a compromise between two different visions. Unlike, say, Lennon and McCartney, who made some excellent music without each other, Gilmour and Waters never shined as brightly as when they...

Bill, Benny and Jimmy

In The Wall Street Journal this week, my monthly "Anatomy of a Song" column looked at Alice Cooper's Eighteen, a potent hard-rock single in 1970 about teenage uncertainty and self-doubt (go here). The song became the band's first hit just as the group was about to go under. What changed? A young producer who was sent to blow them off but wound up working with them on their recordings, and vast support by fans in the Midwest. Of course, Alice Cooper would go on to pioneer theatrical shock roc...

Alice Cooper Premieres New Song Paranoiac Personality

Last night on his radio program, “Nights With Alice Cooper,” Alice debuted the first single, “Paranoiac Personality” off the forthcoming album Paranormal. Paranormal features two songs written and recorded with...

Listening Booth: Deep Purple, “Time For Bedlam”

Deep Purple confuses me deeply. Regarded within the highest echelons of British rock, the band has steadily guided a career from the very late-’60s right up to the forthcoming album, Infinite. And yet, unless you are a Deep Purple fan, you possibly know only two songs and, more likely, only know one of those two. I’m sure you know which one I’m talking about. Casual observers probably have no idea that David Coverdale was once a vocalist for the group, prior to striking out on his own with White...

Exclusive Interview and Photos: Alice Cooper on Rock Stars and Politics

Legendary shock rocker Alice Cooper talks to us about why rock stars should never talk politics Alice Cooper broke my camera.  OK, not exactly…I’d used the same Nikon camera to shoot numerous shows from KISS to Rob Zombie.  Then, poof, in the middle of capturing the Coop, it went up to that big camera cloud in the sky.  Luckily, before it went belly up, I managed to knock off a few good shots for the gallery below.  You see, I recently saw Alice Cooper in Grand Prairie, Texas.  The show was ...

Kanye West’s Fashion Show: A Yeezy Disaster?

Is Kanye West an evil genius or just plain evil? One could argue his brand has never been bigger, and the negative press is only serving to perpetuate his popularity, given that all his pop-up shows sell out swiftly. When the ‘Life of Pablo’ rapper debuted his Yeezy Season 4 collection in the blazing heat, hours late, and left models passing out sans water and sitting on the grass, the press rightfully erupted, and even the designer for Bergdorf Goodman came to the rescue. The editorial directo...

Kanye West Teams With Balmain for “Wolves” Video

Kanye West has always tried to fuse fashion with music, and perhaps he found the perfect collaboration while promoting “Wolves” with Olivier Rousteing’s Fall 2016 line for Balmain. According to Rousteing, he wanted to create a campaign around Kanye’s lyrics, music, and aesthetic. Of course, the video always features Kanye’s wife and muse, who wore her arresting Balmain dress from the 2016 MET Gala. The video for ‘The Life of Pablo’ track was directed by Steven Klein and art directed by Pascal ...

Kanye West Takes Aim at Bob Ezrin — Finally Makes Sense

Of all Kanye West’s rants, his effusive rage against veteran music producer Bob Ezrin has to be the most hilarious . . . and on point. In a piece written for Bob Lefsetz’s “Lefsetz Letter,” Ezrin took aim at West’s new album, calling it “sophomoric” and said that we won’t be be “quoting too many of Kanye’s songs 20 years from now,” as we would “Jay-Z, Tupac, Biggie or even M.C. Hammer.” He furthered that Kanye “didn’t open up new avenues of public discourse like N.W.A., or introduce the world t...

The self-assured rapper has absolutely destroyed producer Bob Ezrin - who has worked with Kiss, Lou Reed and Pink Floyd after he branded Yeezy's songwriting as "sophomoric at best" in his newsletter. Bob wrote: "[Kanye] didn't open up new avenues of public discourse like NWA, or introduce the world to a new art form like Grandmaster Flash, or even meaningfully and memorably address social issues through his music like Marshall, Macklemore and Kendrick.

Kanye West Debuts New Song With Sampha (Video)

Aside from barking on famed rock producer out-of-touch white guy Bob Ezrin for saying Macklemore and MC Hammer make better music (srsly, bro?), Kanye West made a surprise appearance at Yo Gotti’s album release party at L.A.’s 1OAK night club last night. And just like he did at Madison Square Garden earlier this month, Yeezy plugged the aux cord into his laptop and played an unreleased joint for the crowd.
