A Little Story for Earth Day

Now various folks call people like me who try to reduce their environmental impact on the earth "Tree Huggers". Most times I take the reference as a badge of honor. But sometimes, depending on the context, I'm not always thinking Bob Ross style happy thoughts about trees. I recently built myself up an electric bike and even more recently pledged that I was not going to charge it off the main power grid. With the help of my son Peter, I assembled a small bike shed in our back driveway a...

Bob Ross through Google's DeepDream

DeepDream is AI software developed by Google to identify things it finds in images. Most people know it for the way it turns photos and videos into hallucinatory kaleidoscopic nightmares, in which faces of creatures inexplicably appear in clothing, rocks, clouds, or anything with a pattern or texture. Alexander Reben made good use of DeepDream in an episode of Bob Ross's The Joy of Painting. My favorite part is where Bob is petting some little animal in his hand. It changes into a different ...

Learn the square root of i, Bob Ross style

Take a walk with me down a little garden path in a secluded place; you’ll delight in the discovery of a beautiful mathematical equation. –– Tibeess Tibees is a blissed out mathematician who likens her style to Bob Ross. And I definitely see it. She's soft spoken, easy to follow, and has described math as beautiful and fun. When introducing this video, she says we'll be "exploring the square root of i. It's a curious question with a delightful answer." So get out your "pen, some paper, and a...

Becoming More Curiously Creative

With the new year well on its way, I’m thinking about what’s in store for myself in 2019: what things I want to associate with, what work I’ll do, what activities I’ll plan, how I’ll be creative. So much to think about, a bit overwhelming. But I’m going to go with the FLOW, which is my word for this year. At the heart of that flow will be curiosity. I am becoming more and more curious, about everything really. It’s as if I’ve been born again and this big wide world is all so new and I’m discover...

Big Sky Montana Wedding at Rainbow Ranch Lodge

I'm officially labeling today's fete as 'mountain wedding magic'. Big Sky really is incomparable when it comes to providing a beautiful backdrop for rustic romance... trees dotting the river line that would make Bob Ross do a happy dance, an elegantly rolling horizon line and such peaceful sounds of nature. Our incredibly talented Little Black Book Member, Simply Sarah, captured that atmosphere and so much more for Nikki and Kevin. With planning by BASH, there are plenty of steal-worthy details ...

Artist lovingly paints Texas fast food joints in Kinkade-esque scenery

San Antonio artist Michael Esparza's oil paintings put Texas-based fast food restaurants in the center of bucolic landscapes. It's hard not to compare his work to Thomas Kinkade's but that's the point. (The main difference, imo, is that Esparza's pieces are actually palatable.) Texas Monthly: The idea for the series, which Esparza describes as “a little bit Bob Ross and a little bit Thomas Kinkade,” came to him 2012, just after he came back to Texas from a year of studying art in Italy. In Italy...

The Annual Reese Family Christmas Letter

Merry Christmas and happy holidays from the Reese family! I’m assuming 2018 has been exactly the same for you and your family as it has for us. Of course I’m referring to the fact that Despacito has been playing EVERY SINGLE TIME you have turned on the radio all year.Aside from the unwelcome assault on our family from Despacito, here is a summary of 2018:Kylee is in ninth grade. Her artistic talents have increased exponentially over the past year. She creates stunningly beautiful art and paint...

Christmas Sweaters: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

Some people measure holiday spirit by how soon you start playing Mariah Carey's version of ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’, some by when you put up the tree (after Thanksgiving is highly encouraged), yet others measure it by how cheeky and over-the-top your knitwear collection is. No, we're not talking about if you own enough oversized turtlenecks and cozy sweaters. We’re talking about ugly sweaters. Those we can't help but cringe and love all at the same time. Each year, the selection of the...

Classic Radiohead Songs Re-Imagined as a Sci-Fi Book, Pulp Fiction Magazine & Other Nostalgic Artifacts

When we with artist and screenwriter Todd Alcott, he was immortalizing the work of stars who hit their stride in the 70s and 80s, as highly convincing pulp novel and magazine covers inspired by their most famous songs and lyrics. David Bowie’s “Young Americans” yields an East of Eden-like blonde couple reclining in the grass. Talking Heads’ “Life During Wartime” becomes an erotically violent, or violently erotic, magazine that ain’t fooling around. Next, we took a look at Alcott’s series of p...

UFC 229: Michelle Waterson balances being a mom and ‘The Karate Hottie’

In life, there is balance. In Michelle Waterson’s life, she is embracing it – inside the Octagon and out. The eighth-ranked UFC strawweight hopes to do more than enough, however, to gain the edge over ninth-ranked Felice Herrig as they kick off the UFC 229 main card Saturday at T-Mobile Arena. “I feel amazing. It’s a great fight camp. I know that we just signed a new contract with the UFC, so this is the prime time of my career,” Waterson said in an exclusive interview earlier this week. “My hus...

The Fall and Rise of Hotel Art

In 2016, the world's largest budget hotel chain, Super 8, underwent an art makeover. Whatever you imagine when you imagine quintessentially kitschy hotel art—a deer by a babbling brook near a lamplit cottage, a Bob Ross paint-by-numbers special, powdery winterscapes of quaint villages, maybe even a velvet painting if you're lucky—that's the kind of stuff that had been hanging in Super 8 rooms since the chain was founded in 1974. But at two events, one hosted by Amy Sedaris at a gallery sp...
