Picking the Men’s NCAA Tournament Field: February 23rd Edition

Photo by Scott W. Grau/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Updating from last week, various people on the NCAA Tournament Committee have further clarified/walked back the idea of using the Pairwise this year to specify that they meant they’ll use it within each conference to determine the rankings of that conference. Which is terrific, but not entirely helpful since, with an exception or two, that’s already pretty easy to do. The real difficulty in this process is going to be de...

Texas State investigates racial abuse claims against coach

Texas State ordered an investigation Friday into a former basketball player's allegations of racist remarks by coach Danny Kaspar. Former Bobcats point guard Jaylen Shead posted the allegations on Twitter late Thursday, accusing Kaspar of singling out black players with racist taunts and threatening to have a foreign player deported. Shead, who transferred to Washington State before last season, did not immediately response to requests for comment Friday, nor did Kaspar, who has coached t...

Whale & Riveters Add New, Fresh Faces

Recently both the Connecticut Whale and the Metropolitan Riveters upgraded their rosters for Season 6 with new, fresh faces who will be hoping to make their NWHL debuts in November. Both franchises needed to add some more talent to catch the front-running Boston Pride and both have to believe they are closer to that goal after their most recent additions. The Whale upgraded their goaltender depth chart on May 21 with the signing of Abbie Ives from nearby Quinnipiac University. Later that day ...

Red Wings’ Filip Larsson Honing Skills in ECHL

Last Saturday the Detroit Red Wings got a boost from the return of goaltender Jonathan Bernier. He was terrific, stopping 30 of 31 shots in his first game action since Jan. 10. And it didn’t even matter. None of it has, lately. Detroit, on Friday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets, were shut out for the third time in four games, with two of those losses coming with Bernier in net. The most recent goose egg counted against backup Jimmy Howard, who stopped 42 of 43 shots, but hasn’t been ...

From Crying Jordan to McKayla Is Not Impressed, memes came of age in the 2010s

A decade ago, you might have reacted to the word 'meme' like this:Now, you probably wouldn't bat an eye. A meme is an inside joke with the internet; it's a moment turned into comedy; it's Twitter somehow galvanizing over humour.Memes, at least in their current form, did not exist prior to this decade. Twitter was launched in 2006, but only began turning mainstream in 2009 after celebrities like NBA star Shaquille O'Neal joined the social platform.Merriam Webster dic...

New Dodger pitcher Donnie Hart was helped by a fortuitous sidestep

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The way Donnie Hart tells the story, he was a natural sidearm pitcher before he realized it for himself. In 2013 he was a junior at Texas State University. The motion came naturally to the left-hander, yet he’d never tried pitching sidearm in a game. “He said, ‘let’s go see if that will work out in the bullpen,’” Hart said. “So we went down t...
