SpaceX Fires Up the Engine On Its Test Starship Vehicle For the First Time

SpaceX successfully ignited the onboard engine of its next-generation spacecraft, the Starship, for the first time today. "The ignition was a test known as a static fire, meant to try out the engine while the vehicle remained tethered to the Earth," reports The Verge. "However, today's test marked the first time this vehicle lit up its engine, and it could pave the way for short 'hop' flights in the near future." From the report: This particular vehicle, referred to as "Starhopper," is meant to ...

SpaceX’s Starhopper takes its first rocket hop, marking another step toward Mars

After weeks of preparation, the prototype test vehicle for SpaceX's monster spaceship, known as Starhopper, fired up its methane-powered Raptor rocket engine for the first time today and lifted ever so slightly off its Texas launch pad. "Starhopper completed tethered hop," SpaceX CEO Elon Musk reported in a tweet. "All systems green." The round-topped rocket is meant to serve as a testbed for SpaceX's interplanetary-class Starship, just as earlier testbeds known as the Grasshopper and th...

SpaceX has completed the first tethered hop for the “Starhopper”

SpaceX has completed the first tethered jump for its Starship prototyped, Elon Musk confirmed in a tweet Wednesday evening. Called the Starhopper because it’s making limited hops to test the landing capabilities of the Starship vehicle, the tethered jump represents the first firing of a rocket engine at the company’s Boca Chica launch site. The hops are similar to the testing that preceded the commercial development and use of SpaceX’s reusable Falcon 9 rockets. Those tests, the Grasshopper a...

Elon Musk just revealed 5 major updates to SpaceX's Mars spaceship project. Here's what we learned.

Elon Musk has confirmed that SpaceX hopes to try "very short" launches or "hops" of a new spaceship prototype in Texas this week. Called the "Test Hopper," the vehicle is a prototype of a more advanced, 400-foot-tall launch system called Starship, which SpaceX is designing to send people to Mars. Musk also shared critical updates about Starship's heat shield, test-launch plan, construction timeline, and more. When updates about SpaceX's plans rain from Elon Musk, they tend to pour. Such was ...

Elon Musk: SpaceX hopes to launch 'Test Hopper' — a prototype for a giant Mars rocket ship — for the first time this week

SpaceX has built a stainless-steel rocket ship at its launch site near Boca Chica Beach, located at the southern tip of Texas. "Test Hopper" is the first yet partly-functional prototype of Starship: a launch system that SpaceX founder Elon Musk hopes to use to send people to Mars. A sheriff hand-delivered road closure notices to residents on Friday, according to a local resident. The document warned locals that SpaceX will "conduct testing" as soon as Monday, March 18. SpaceX previously said i...

Elon Musk shows off prototype of Mars-bound rocket, Starship

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has unveiled the first pictures of a retro-looking, steely rocket called Starship that may one day carry people to the Moon and Mars. Musk posted pictures on Twitter late Thursday of the test version of the Starship Hopper, which awaits its first flight test in Texas in the coming weeks. The prototype built in Boca Chica, along the Gulf Coast of Texas, is nine yards (meters) in diameter -- like the future rocket will be -- but is shorter.

Elon Musk shows off SpaceX's Tintin inspired 'Starship'

It may look like something straight out of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century or Tintin's Destination Moon but, according to Elon Musk, the pictures he tweeted of his latest SpaceX creation are very much real. Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and electric car-maker Tesla, revealed that assembly of the 'Starship Hopper' test-flight rocket was complete and that the pictures of the shimmering, stainless steel construction were 'not a rendering'. The Tintin comparison is not an accident. In ...

Elon Musk says SpaceX is on track to launch people to Mars within 6 years — here's the full timeline of his plans to colonize the red planet

Elon Musk is hell-bent on colonizing Mars. That's the spirit with which he founded SpaceX, his rocket company, in 2002. Musk was frustrated that NASA wasn't doing more to get people to the red planet — and concerned that a backup plan for humanity wasn't being developed (for when Earth becomes an uninhabitable wasteland). Since then, SpaceX has developed several impressive aerospace systems: Falcon 1, its first orbital rocket; Grasshopper, a small self-landing test rocket; Falcon 9, a reusable ...

A Midcentury Classic Is Reborn in Acapulco

Welcome to the Acapulco of yesteryear; the one that Elvis, Frank Sinatra, and Elizabeth Taylor knew. To the casual observer, a visit to the Hotel Boca Chica might feel like stepping back in time, to an Acapulco hotspot that time didn’t defeat. The Boca Chica was once a happening place in the boozy but classy Acapulco of the 1950s (even given a shot in the opening scenes of Elvis flick Fun in Acapulco). But the hotel fell into disrepair when Acapulco fell out of favor with tourists, and it suffer...

Why we love dive bars

I HAVE A DRINKING GIRL’S SIXTH SENSE. I can’t predict imminent danger or thunderstorms but I can always find a dive bar. I feel most at home on four pegs stuck to a dirty floor. We’re talking about places where they sell erotic kits in the bathroom quarter machine. Places where you can smoke, tolerate the smoke, or see yourself out. Where pickled eggs and a shot called “ass-juice” beckon from behind the bar–a bar framed in shotgun shells, Christmas lights, or ancient lingerie. More often than...
