Bosch's X-Lock System for Quick Angle Grinder Accessory Changes

Angle grinders are meant to be used at, well, an angle. That pesky lock nut that holds the blade on prevents you from grinding with the wheel flat against the workpiece, should your application require it. More importantly, the lock nut is time-consuming to remove/re-attach and requires you keep the wrench handy. To solve this, Bosch is rolling out their new X-Lock system, which allows the user to change accessories quickly and tool-free. Bosch's engineers have attacked the problem with character...

"The Extraction of the Stone of Madness."

That's a painting by Hieronymus Bosch (c.1488–1516). I'm seeing it this morning because I'm hearing about a friend's surgery and thinking about how (and when) human beings got the idea that cutting (or drilling) into the interior of the human body might improve person's medical condition. You'd think the idea "first, do no harm" is so strong and obvious that no one would dare intrude into a living human body. The title of Bosch's painting suggests that the daring arises out of the belief that som...

The Musical Instruments in Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights Get Brought to Life, and It Turns Out That They Sound “Painful” and “Horrible”

Welcome to The Garden of Earthly Delights. You’ll find no angelic strings here. Those are reserved for first class citizens whose virtuous lives earned them passage to the uppermost heights. Down below, stringed instruments produce the most hellish sort of cacophony, a fitting accompaniment for the horn whose bell is befouled with the arm of a tortured soul. How do we know that's what they sounded like? A group of musicologists, craftspeople and academics from the Bate Collection of Musical...

Humans will accompany autonomous shuttles as they take over our cities

Autonomous shuttles could become the first widespread, real-world application of level-five autonomous technology. They won't be entirely human-less, though. 10 Easy Pieces: Best Canister Vacuums for Small Spaces

The beauty of the canister vacuum? If you have, say, 20 inches of storage space, you can keep your dust-busting, allergen-eliminating machine well out of sight. Remembering the startups we lost in 2018

There are few things in this world more difficult than launching a successful startup. It takes talent, know-how, money and a hell of a lot of good timing and luck. And even with all of those magical components in place, the odds may still be against you. At TechCrunch, we take pride at covering the best and brightest of the startup world. The top 4 trends spotted in this years’ robot scene

For robots, 2018 was a year of goodbyes, hellos, and intriguing pointers to future developments. Here are the four major trends that I spotted in the robot scene this year: General-purpose consumer robots aren’t a business… yet The year began with a large consumer robot contingent at CES, and a great deal of press for leading contenders such as Kuri and Jibo. But halfway through the year, The Robot Report published that Jibo had laid off most employees and was running on fumes. Two months later,...

The great e-bike experiment: the data

(Previously: A bicycle snob takes on an e-bike) Last time around, we met the e-bike, and discussed how it came to pass. I was starting to feel comfortable with how it rode, and I was curious to see how it handled my commute. Speed, or lack thereof The first lesson in e-biking is that it isn't really about speed (that is, on a legal in Canada, pedal assist bike). Yes, there are circumstances where you're moving dramatically faster than you would on a non-e-bike. But overall, if you're a s...

La Vie en Rose: Inside a Costumier’s Dreamlike, DIY Maison in France

How would a French costumier style her own stately country house? With quiet, rosy hues, cinematic hints of silver, and linens she sews herself. For months we’ve been following French stylist and costumier Céline Sathal on Instagram as she slowly and with care restores a traditional hôtel particulier in a tiny village outside of Tolouse. Sathal, who works as a costume designer for the French theater, opera, and cinema, found the 1870s house on Le Bon Coin, the French equivalent of Craiglist (“wh...

Books: 11 books perfect for Southern California readers and the holidays

Iceland has a national tradition called Jolabokaflod, or the “Christmas Book Flood,” and I picture it every year as a giant blue wave of books flowing into Christmas Eve when Icelanders exchange books and chocolate. Iceland is my kind of place. My chocolate recommendations could fill their own column, so for now let’s focus on books and this season’s wave of Southern California’s best.
