'Mythbusters' host Adam Savage built a rickshaw pulled by a Boston Dynamics robot

Boston Dynamics, the robotics startup famous for its animal-like robots, started leasing its "Spot" robot last year. Former "Mythbusters" host Adam Savage got one for his "Tested" YouTube channel, and decided to build a bespoke rickshaw for it. The experiment was an overall success, although Spot struggled taking the rickshaw up a slight hill. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Boston Dynamics started leasing out its animal-like Spot robots in September, and they're already ...

Adam Savage Found the Perfect Reason To Spend Tens of Thousands of Dollars on a Robotic Dog

With a price tag of tens of thousands of dollars, Boston Dynamics’ Spot robodog was a tough sell when it officially went on sale last September. A real dog was much cheaper, and arguably more useful, but as an alternative to an electric car, Adam Savage might have found the perfect way to justify buying a robotic dog.Read more...

Watch experts from Boston Dynamics, Built, Dusty and Toggle discuss robotic construction at TC Sessions: Robotics

After recently doing a survey of the top robotics investment rounds, it became pretty clear: construction is going to be huge for this industry. Global construction is expected to hit $13 trillion by 2022 (with China alone hitting that number in 2030), and there are plenty of dull, dirty and dangerous jobs that seem well positioned for potential automation. With that in mind, we’ve put together a fantastic — and packed — panel set to examine how robotics, AI and automation are poised to tran...

What robotics’ biggest raises tell us about the industry’s future

I visited Boston last week and met with a number of robotics researchers, startups and established companies — more on that later — in the lead up to TechCrunch’s fourth annual TC Sessions Robotics + AI in early March. A big part of prepping for that event and my recent trip involved surveying some of the biggest funding raises from the past year. A quick survey of these trends finds most investments concentrated in a handful of key categories. From there, we can get a pretty clear view of w...

Construction startup Scaled Robotics raises a €2M seed round

Industrial robots are expensive. But, then, so are construction mistakes. Being off by an inch here or there adds up quickly, and too often crews need to correctly costly errors. There’s a reason construction has become the next great target of the robotics and automation industries, with a number of startups vying to create solutions that can constantly monitor sites to detect mistakes before it’s too late. TechCrunch’s Disrupt Berlin Berlin Battlefield winner Scaled Robotics this week is am...

Boston Dynamics’ new and former CEOs discuss future of the robotics pioneer

After more than a quarter century, Boston Dynamics has a new CEO. The transition (which quietly occurred late last year), saw founder Marc Raibert step aside to become chairman, as longtime employee Rob Playter took the reins.  The key personnel change comes at a pivotal time for the company, which recently began the process of commercializing a pair of its extremely advanced robots. Along with the C-level shift, Boston Dynamics also announced that it’s making the SDK for its Spot robot avail...

Spot the Robot Dog Trots Into the Big, Bad World

Boston Dynamics' creation is starting to sniff out its role in the workforce: as a helpful canine that still sometimes needs you to hold its paw. From a report: This autumn, after years of dropping view-amassing videos of Spot the robot dog fending off stick-wielding humans and opening doors for its pals, Boston Dynamics finally announced that the machine was hitting the market -- for a select few early adopters, at least. BD's people would be the first to tell you that they don't fully know wha...

Boston Dynamics appoints its first-ever new CEO

After more than a quarter-century spent developing some of the industry’s most iconic and advanced machines, Boston Dynamics is a company in the midst of a profound transformation. This week, the Waltham, Mass.-based organization issued a number of key announcements, all focused on the same fundamental shift, as it readies the release of two commercial robots: Spot and Handle. The top of the company has recently seen its first major shakeup since its founding in the early 1990s. Founder Marc ...

Boston Dynamics’ Spot gets an SDK and co-starring role in an Adam Savage video

This next year will be one of the most important since Boston Dynamics was founded back in 1992. After changing hands from Google to Softbank, the robot maker is getting more aggressive about commercializing products, bringing Spot to market, while Handle waits in the wings. The news includes a new CEO, its first since founding. This week, Boston Dynamics is also making Spot’s SDK available to the public via Github. That will go live tomorrow. It’s a pretty big step for the company and its p...

This robot 'dog' can climb ladders, a first for four-legged robots

Researchers successfully built a quadruped robot that's capable of climbing ladders. The robot was created by a team at Tokyo Metropolitan University and debuted earlier this month, IEEE Spectrum reported. It uses a 3D camera, touch and force sensors on its claws. A neural network — learning software that allows the robot to execute complex functions — enables it to navigate ladders. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Four-legged creatures, both living and robotic, have histo...

That Robot Dog from Boston Dynamics has a new job on the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad

I know a guy who works at Boston Dynamics. He spends all day fussing over how to get a robot leg to bend the right way. It's kind of boring, but he likes tinkering with things. And hey, it's a job. When he sees people freaking out about whatever new robot they've unleashed unto the world, he just laughs, because he knows how much time he's spent futzing with those stupid joints. For the most part, he's got a point; we like to freak out about our Terminator future, but mostly it's pretty lame, li...

US Police Already Using 'Spot' Robot From Boston Dynamics In the Real World

Massachusetts State Police (MSP) has been quietly testing ways to use the four-legged Boston Dynamics robot known as Spot, according to new documents obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts. And while Spot isn't equipped with a weapon just yet, the documents provide a terrifying peek at our RoboCop future. Gizmodo reports: The Spot robot, which was officially made available for lease to businesses last month, has been in use by MSP since at least April 2019 and has engage...

The ACLU wants details about videos of Boston Dynamics robot in police exercises

Back in April at our robotics event at UC Berkeley, Boston Dynamics head Marc Raibert showed off video of the company’s Spot robot in a number of different real world scenarios. Some, like construction and first responders, were familiar to anyone who has been following the company — and automation in general.  Another scenario, which found the robot opening doors during a training exercise for the Massachusetts State Police, was something different entirely. It was a brief video that demonst...

The eerily lifelike robot dog 'Spot' is now working with the police

The array of robots from Boston Dynamics often appear in sometimes silly, sometimes terrifying videos that the company publishes on YouTube. Like most of Boston Dynamics' robots, the company's dog-like robots — Spot and Spot Mini — are in ongoing development, but commercial sales via lease agreements have begun. The Spot robot is already being used by the Massachusetts State Police. The Massachusetts State Police borrowed a Spot robot from Boston Dynamics for several months in 2019, and it was...

Google's parent company Alphabet is getting back into robots, but this time it's using AI to create robots that can learn on their own (GOOG)

Alphabet's X group, the R&D lab formerly known as Google X, introduced the Everyday Robot Project on Thursday. The project is Alphabet's second attempt to get into the robotics business, following a failed string of acquisitions several years ago. The new project is focused on building robots capable of useful, everyday tasks, like sorting recycling. Alphabet's X group said it will focus on AI-enabled robots that can be learn tasks on their own, rather than being programmed to do specific thin...

Hilarious Boston-Dynamics-Style Robot Soldier Video

No one is more terrified of robots than I am, so when I heard that Corridor Digital created a militarized parody of those Boston Dynamics robot videos, I watched it with one eye open.Surprisingly, it was more funny than terrifying. And there's a terrific twist at the end, which I don't want to spoil for you:

Bosstown Dynamics, the future of law enforcement

Corridor produced this excellent parody of Boston Dynamics' robots and the style of its promotional videos. It could be the trailer for a new Neill Blomkamp or Paul Verhoeven movie, but where the satire is immediately transformed into stress because there's very little about it that seems unlikely or even beyond the fairly immediate future. Bosstown Dynamics has a new robot in town. You'll see it in the army soon! The unnerving way they abused the robots in early Boston Dynamics videos, I bet...
