Child’s Play 2

After watching the reboot not too long ago, and the original first film late last year, it was time to revisit the sequel. Is it good? I’m definitely more a fan of the reboot and the way they position Chucky (as an A.I. run amok, instead of the supernatural take of the original films), but Brad Dourif’s voicing of Chucky is still classic and fun to hear. I did feel a bit bored throughout, but there were a few fun sequences, especially the climax and the way they “kill” Chucky at the end. I...

CS Soapbox: Franchises That Need to End Following Fast & Furious

CS Soapbox: Franchises that need to end following Fast & Furious “Overstaying its welcome.” It’s a phrase I’ve often heard when discussing television but very rarely in the film world, despite a number of franchises running far past their expiration date, and with the recent confirmation that Universal Pictures’ Fast & Furious mainline series would be coming to an end after two more films, I think it’s high time we look at some of the many movie series out there, be they our favorites or most...

The Exorcist III

I think this has always been considered a better sequel than the second one, and there are certainly some scenes in this movie that are incredibly compelling. The two standouts for me are the extended shot down the corridor that ends with the killing of the nurse (truly oneof the most terrifying scenes to watch, with the suspense building to a point where you know something is going to happen, and it doesn’t disappoint), and the first scene where Brad Dourif reveals himself as the possesso...

The Best Scene in ‘The Exorcist III’ Makes a Strong Case for Jump Scares

(Welcome to  Scariest Scene Ever , a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror. In this edition: An iconic scene from The Exorcist III single handily proves the merit of the jump scare.) The jump scare gets a bad rap. One of horror’s most oft-used tools is the equivalent of a cinematic magic trick, an artform of misdirection to create an abrupt fear response. There’s nothing like a perfectly executed jump scare to make your heart skip a beat. Yet, like most tools, relyi...

It’s been a rough few weeks, so how about some good news? Let’s all take a deep breath and bask in the knowledge that Jennifer Tilly is returning to the Child’s Play franchise for the Chucky TV series. Tilly played Chucky’s girlfriend Tiffany (and also a fictionalized version of herself) in the Child’s Play movies starting with 1998’s Bride of Chucky. The Chucky/Child’s Play franchise is a blast. While not every film in the series can be classified as good, I’d argue that all of them are wat...
