Atlanta Braves 2020 commitments: $83 million Arbitration estimates: $28.4 million Farm system rank: 4th Contention status: World Series Of all the short- and long-term landing spots for Betts, the Braves have to be considered high on the list. Blessed with one of baseball's best young nucleuses that features 21-year-old MVP candidate Ronald Acuña Jr. and 22-year-old NL hits leader Ozzie Albies, they're a team on the rise trying to sell out a new ballpark. Betts fits their mix of vetera...

Padres plan to give Ron Washington a second interview

Last week there was a report that the San Diego Padres were doing “due diligence” on former Rangers manager and current Braves third base coach Ron Washington in connection with their managerial opening. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports today that Washington has already had an interview and that, in fact, the Padres are planning to call him back for a second round. Which suggests that GM A.J. Preller, formerly a Rangers assistant GM, is favoring guys he knows from his time in Texas.

Here’s what the Braves are projected to earn from their 3 NLDS home games

The Atlanta Braves failed to exorcise their playoff demons, but they are likely to enter the offseason with a consolation prize: more fourth-quarter revenue. Based off last year's earnings report, the Braves earned about $5 million per playoff game. That projects the franchise to make at least $15 million in baseball revenue this quarter after hosting the St. Louis Cardinals three times in the National League Division Series this month.

Analysis: Now what? Dodgers’ NLDS failure leads to blame game and a winter of questions

LOS ANGELES — Now what? Reddened eyes and hunched shoulders filled the Dodgers’ clubhouse last night as the shock of losing to the Washington Nationals began to sink in. The awareness of just how badly the Dodgers had misjudged their destiny this fall might take longer to process. “I’ll let you know when I process it,” infielder Max Muncy said when asked how long it would take to absorb the disappointment. Clayton Kershaw, playing the noble warrior and trying to lay claim to all the blame for hi...

What’s the deal with Omaha Beach – and other horse racing questions

Time for the answer man to open his mailbag and see what needs to be addressed. Q: So help me sort this out. Omaha Beach is gone for six months, returns and wins a sprint race, and now suddenly he’s back in the Breeders’ Cup picture again? I heard he was not under consideration for the Classic anymore, and now he is? I’m confused. A: After his impressive victory in last weekend’s Santa Anita Sprint Championship, one in which he ran the 6 furlongs in an insane 1:08.79 over a track that has been p...

Braves will need time to recover from latest playoff flop

ATLANTA (AP) — One day later, Brian Snitker had shed his uniform but was still wearing the pain of yet another one-and-done postseason exit for the Atlanta Braves. “It’s going to take me a while to kind of get over this whole thing,” the manager said Thursday. Snitker and general manager Alex Anthopoulos had no […]

Braves loss vs. Dodgers loss: which was worse?

The Braves got shellacked in the first inning last night and lost. The Dodgers took a lead late into the game only to see their manager's choices and their relief pitchers woof it, sending them to defeat as well. For my part I sat, as a Braves fan, and watched my team cough up ten runs in the first inning, secure in the dreadful knowledge that the game was already lost.

10-spot: Cards oust Braves from NLDS with record 1st inning

The St. Louis Cardinals turned the diamond into a giant pinball machine, dinging hits all over SunTrust Park. People want answers after Bay Area TV station uses racist headline to cover Braves NLDS loss

A Bay Area news station likely wants a do-over after using a facepalm-worthy racially insensitive headline in its coverage of the Atlanta Braves being bounced out of the MLB postseason. Particularly given the conversation that's surrounded the Braves recently. A Cardinals pitcher of Native American descent objected to the Braves' infamous tomahawk chop and the team responded Wednesday by toning down its use of the chop.

How can Atlanta sports fans ever get over this debacle?

Of all the sports heartbreaks that the city of Atlanta has suffered in its five-plus decades as a major league town, Wednesday night's decisive NLDS Game 5—where the Braves surrendered 10 runs in the first inning to the Cardinals en route to a 13-1 defeat—has to rank among the most pathetic, most embarrassing, most burn-every-ATL-item-you-own that this beleaguered, beaten-down fanbase has ever suffered. Ten runs! In the first [censored] inning! How does that even happen? The Cardinals playe...

Jack Flaherty insists he didn’t hit Ronald Acuña Jr. on purpose

Things got a little bit snippy between the Braves and Cardinals during the NLDS. In Game 1, Ronald Acuña Jr. hit a two-run homer off of Carlos Martínez in the ninth inning, helping close what was a four-run deficit. An exited Acuña who, earlier in the game did not run hard out of the box on what turned into a long single that he thought had home run distance, gesticulated wildly towards his dugout as he rounded the bases.

The Cardinals didn't need Jack Flaherty to win Game 5 of the NLDS against the Braves. Would they have been better off saving him for the NLCS?

Braves’ [stuff] doesn’t work in the playoffs, either

The A's, however, are not the only team whose [stuff] doesn't work in the playoffs. The Twins, who were just swept out of the ALDS by the Yankees, haven't reached the ALCS since 2002. They have failed in their last six appearances in the ALDS — mostly against the Yankees — and lost the AL Wild Card game in 2017 as well (to the Yankees).

Braves remove foam tomahawks from stadium

Last weekend Cardinals rookie reliever Ryan Helsley, who is a member of the Cherokee Nation, gave an interview with Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in which Helsley said that he found the “Tomahawk Chop” cheer performed by Braves fans, and encouraged by the club with music and scoreboard prompts, to be disrespectful. Most people took this to be a bit of non-committal corporate speech, much like the sort the Braves have offered in the past to critics of its use of Native American ico...

Braves back in Atlanta, where other teams come to celebrate

The Braves are back in the A-T-L for a decisive postseason game. Over the years, Atlanta has been the place where other teams come to celebrate in October. The St. Louis Cardinals hope to continue that trend when they face the Braves in Game 5 of the NL Division Series on Wednesday.
