ABC’s ‘Queens’ Lets Brandy, Eve, Crafty Melodrama Shine: TV Review

The music video that opens ABC’s new drama “Queens” lays it on thick. Each member of the Nasty Girls — Naomi, aka Xplicit Lyrics (Brandy); Valeria, aka Butter Pecan (Nadine Velazquez); Jill, aka Da Thrill (Naturi Naughton); and Brianna, aka Professor Sex (Eve) — struts out of a burning mansion, across the bow of a […]

A feel-good family funeral

In today’s Wall Street Journal I review two Broadway transfers, Chicken & Biscuits and Is This a Room. Here’s an excerpt. *  *  * Douglas Lyons’s “Chicken & Biscuits,” the third of an unprecedented eight shows by Black playwrights that are set to open on Broadway this season, bills itself as “a feel-good comedy that will feed your soul.” This production, which is extremely well directed by Zhailon Levingston, originated at a theater in Queens but was forced to close after less than two weeks bec...

Candyman Spoiler Review: Nia DaCosta Combines Trauma And Martyrs With A Terrifying Myth

Is Candyman real? The characters of Nia DaCosta's legacy sequel begin to ponder this question when the answer reaches its deadliest point. They mine the legend of the supernatural killer for inspiration and laugh at the ridiculous notion that a ghost can be summoned by the repetition of his name. But even when they make light of his existence, there's an understanding of his power. Brianna (Teyonah Parris) brushed off Anthony's (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) suggestion that they perform the ritual and ...

Candyman Ending Explained: The Legend Lives On

"Candyman" is now in theaters, and the Nia DaCosta-helmed horror pic continues the story that began with the original 1992 film. And while this is a direct sequel, it also takes the story in new directions, concluding on a very different note than the original movie. With that in mind, let's take a look at the new "Candyman" ending and what it all means. As you might guess, this post contains major spoilers for the film.  Looking For Candyman "Candyman" kicks off in 1977, where we meet a kid nam...

Candyman Review: A Smart, Scary Sequel That Adds Interesting New Dimensions To The Original

The line between generational trauma and urban legend blurs in "Candyman," Nia DaCosta's smart, scary update/continuation of Bernard Rose's 1992 horror classic. Don't let the title fool you: this is no remake, it's a direct sequel, and it's the best kind of sequel – one that takes ideas introduced in the original film and reshapes them into something fresh and new. To put it more simply: this is how you do it, folks. While some of the film's logic doesn't quite hold up to scrutiny, and while som...

Nia DaCosta, Jordan Peele dare a new generation to summon ‘Candyman’

By LINDSEY BAHR “Candyman” was always more than a surface level horror film. The 1992 film dealt with class, race and trauma. But almost 30 years later, a new version in theaters Aug. 27 reclaims and recenters the narrative around the Black experience. The original film took the seeds of a Clive Barker short story set in a Liverpool slum and transported it to Chicago’s Cabrini-Green housing projects, where the Boogeyman was Black and the lens to the world was a white female doctoral student stud...

Candyman Star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Prepared By Watching The Fly And Rosemary's Baby

Jordan Peele isn't the only prominent Black filmmaker influenced by "Rosemary's Baby." "Candyman" is also drawing inspiration from that movie, along with a certain body-horror classic starring Jeff Goldblum. Our "Candyman" coverage continues with some quotes from film and television star (and fan of The Office) Yahya Adbul-Mateen II and director Nia Dacosta about the movie's romanticism and its influences. For Adbul-Mateen, two touchstones were indeed "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Fly."Little-known ...

Becoming Brianna

Terri Libenson’s latest in the Emmie & Friends series — after Invisible Emmie, Positively Izzy, and Just Jaime — follows the same model, alternating copiously illustrated diary sections with large-panel comics. In Becoming Brianna, the diary pages describe the past, while the comics show the present. Brianna is Emmie’s best friend, and as we saw in Positively Izzy, she’s subject to stage fright. That makes what she’s doing more of a challenge for her — she’s celebrating her bat mitzvah. [...]

Rain arrives in Southern California, but how long will it last?

A single-day storm was expected to drop about a quarter-inch of rain in Southern California on Wednesday, March 3, with a few inches of snow in the local mountains, meteorologists said. The storm was expected to continue through the early evening in the Inland Empire, Los Angeles and Orange counties, meteorologists with the National Weather Service said. Some coastal areas, including Long Beach, had some lightning flashes and booming thunder in the morning. Huntington Beach and Seal Beach tempor...

For centuries, Black artists have used their crafts to share their lived experiences with the world. CNN Mulls Shake-Up at ‘New Day’

CNN is considering a new day for “New Day.” Executives have been mulling a move that would put Alisyn Camerota, the “New Day” co-anchor who has steered the program though the bulk of the Trump administration, to afternoons, according to a person familiar with the matter. Comment on gingerbread yule log by Brianna

I saw this New Year’s Day after lunch. I realized I had every ingredient in stock (even the whipping cream! A rarity in my house). The cake was chilling on the porch ready to go for dessert before we sat down to dinner. An easy, excellent, elegant cake that the whole household enjoyed! Looking forward to having the last of it at tea (it really does last well in the fridge). The only things I didn’t both with were the cranberries and the white chocolate. Just dusted the top with more powdered sug...

Comment on chocolate budino by Brianna

In reply to deb. Deb I just made this for the first time and it seems to have split. The sugar cream looked great and when I first poured it over the chocolate it looked amazing, and then as I continued to stir it became lumpy and an oily slick was floating over the whole thing. I haven’t chilled or eaten yet but I have a feeling it’s not going to be yummy. Any advice on how to prevent this in the future? Was it the brand of chocolate I used or the temperature of the chocolate?

CNN’s Brianna Keilar Fires Back at Tucker Carlson and Kayleigh McEnany

CNN’s Brianna Keilar spent more than 10 minutes of her broadcast on Friday dismantling the smears she has received from both Fox News and the Trump White House this week.“Yesterday, White House Press Secretary implied that I am responsible for two police officers being shot in Louisville,” the anchor began. “She is lying to Americans again and I’ll address that in a moment. But first, I’m not the Brianna that the White House should be focused on right now. Breonna Taylor is.”After recapping for ...
