After tragedy, Evander Kane ready to get back on ice vs. Predators

SAN JOSE -- After an emotional couple of weeks, Evander Kane is excited to get back in the lineup as the Sharks prepare to host the Nashville Predators on Saturday night. The winger hasn't played since Feb. 26 when the Sharks fell 4-1 to the Bruins in Boston, as Kane was sidelined with what the team classified as a mid-body injury. Earlier this week, Kane issued a statement via social media revealing that during that stretch he and his wife lost their daughter during pregnancy.

Maple Leafs Learn Valuable Lesson

Trailing 5-2 in the latter stages of the second period to the Philadelphia Flyers, the Toronto Maple Leafs looked destined for a third straight home loss Friday night. Then, something changed. Leafs defenseman Jake Muzzin notched two goals in quick succession, cutting the deficit to 5-4 heading into the intermission. Although neither goal will make the “plays of the week,” they were the turning point of the game. During the second intermission, Muzzin shared some words of wisdom with TSN’s Mark ...

Maple Leafs, Bruins Set on Collision Course

Call it destiny. Or call it a recurring nightmare. Your name for it completely depends on what side of the puck you’re sitting on – the Boston Bruins or the Toronto Maple Leafs. Either way, it looks as though both teams will likely be staring each other down once again when the Stanley Cup playoffs kick off in just over a month. While there’s still time for things to change, it seems fitting that the Bruins and Maple Leafs hold down the second and third spots, respectively, in the Atlantic Divis...

Joshua Kelley passed on NFL, stayed at UCLA to ‘get even better’

LOS ANGELES — Last August, Joshua Kelley was a walk-on who had never appeared in a Division I football game. Four months, 1,243 yards and a record-setting performance against USC later, the jovial running back was weighing a jump to the NFL draft. The rise was humbling, said Kelley, who last season became UCLA’s first 1,000-yard rusher since 2015. He appreciated the opportunity to possibly fulfill a childhood dream. But as the redshirt junior considered the decision during the offseason, Kelley ...

League Wide Notes

from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe, - No decision yet who will be GM of the expansion Seattle franchise. But league-wide rumors have it down to a three-man short list, Mark Hunter, Ron Hextall and Kelly McCrimmon. Hunter, with a sharp eye for draft talent, resigned as assistant GM in Toronto last spring when Kyle Dubas was named GM. Hextall was canned this season as the Flyers GM. McCrimmon, brother of former Bruins defenseman Brad McCrimmon, joined the expansion Vegas franchise a...

Canadiens Have New King of the Crease as Price Passes Plante

On Thursday night, Carey Price did all he could to secure a win for his Montreal Canadiens, keeping them in the game while the New York Islanders dominated play – controlling 64.5 percent of scoring chances and 69.2 percent of high-danger scoring chances, according to Natural Stat Trick – but his teammates didn’t cooperate in a 2-1 loss. Two nights earlier, with a 3-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on March 12, Price surpassed Jacques Plante to become the Canadiens’ all-time franchise leade...

Breaking Down the Maple Leafs’ Defensive Woes

About halfway through Friday night’s back-and-forth affair between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Philadelphia Flyers, TSN play-by-play man Gord Miller summed up my thoughts perfectly: “Not sure if it’s a winning recipe in the playoffs, but it’s sure fun to watch.” There were so many goals in the second period (seven, to be exact), that I’m not entirely sure what the exact score was when he said it. 5-2 Flyers, perhaps? Maybe 5-3? Regardless, the Maple Leafs overcame a three-goal deficit to win the...

UCLA gymnastics coach Valorie Kondos Field brings her unique greatness to Pauley Pavilion for the last time

LOS ANGELES — There might never have been a more impossible task than to think of the quintessential Valorie Kondos Field story, an anecdote to best describe the legendary head coach who will coach in her final home meet Saturday. Her gymnasts, past and present, rack their brains. How can they possibly sum up the seven national titles, 37 years and countless life lessons? “I’m so nervous,” said former UCLA gymnast Samantha Peszek, who likely never uttered those words during her illustrious gymna...

A Look at the Maple Leafs Coach Beyond the 2019 Playoffs

As the 2019 NHL Playoffs draw near, head coach Mike Babcock and the Toronto Maple Leafs appear set to face the Boston Bruins in the first round for the second season in a row. Last season’s first-round matchup between the two was momentous and led to yet another dramatic Game 7 encounter. Old demons resurfaced and the Bruins were able to crush the Leafs in the third period to win the game 7-4. Since the announcement of the Leafs rebuild in 2015, this series against the Bruins has stood as the te...

2011 NHL Entry Draft: Five Forgotten Picks

The 2011 NHL Entry Draft in St. Paul is notable for a number of reasons. First, it was the second of three straight drafts the Edmonton Oilers picked first overall, selecting Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Second, it’s notable for being where True North Sports & Entertainment, which bought the Atlanta Thrashers a month earlier, revealed they would call their team the Jets and made their first-ever pick, selecting — controversially at the time — Mark Scheifele over Sean Couturier. Third, it’s notable for t...

WINNIPEG — Mark Scheifele scored once and added a pair of assists as the Winnipeg Jets handed the Boston Bruins their third straight loss with a 4-3 victory on Thursday. Nikolaj Ehlers scored the game-winner with seven minutes remaining in the third period after defenceman Jacob Trouba made it 3-2 early in the period. UCLA falls to Arizona State in Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinals

LAS VEGAS — UCLA’s turbulent basketball season, which included the program’s first midseason coaching change, likely came to an end Thursday evening, an anticlimactic finish in a half-empty arena. The seventh-seeded Bruins lost to second-seeded Arizona State 83-72 in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Tournament after trailing by double-digits for much of the second half. It was an early exit for the Bruins after they had reached at least the semifinals of the conference tournament in the previous ...
