Trend Alert: Vintage French Shops You Can Browse from Your Laptop

We’d look for any excuse to book a flight to France, map out a route, and spend a few days scouring flea markets, brocantes, and vides greniers (the French version of a garage sale) for vintage finds. The next best thing? A few small vintage shops, with wares hand-sourced from antiques shops and stalls throughout France, and easily browsable from your couch. Unlike bigger online platforms like eBay and Etsy, these are more curated shops run (and sourced) by individuals and couples, with small se...

A Designer and an Antiquary’s Remodeled Guesthouses in Reims (Soon Available to Rent)

I have never been to Reims, the city in the Champagne region of France where all of the French kings were once crowned. But, through the magic of Instagram, I’ve spent the last few weeks poring over one of the most classically, quietly lovely projects I’ve seen: a pair of guesthouses and the accompanying family house of the family renovating them, steps from the city’s famous cathedral. It was Instagram that first led me to discover Les Penates Reims: While researching Nomibis—a flea market base...

The 12 Best Dance Tracks of 2018

None For the third consecutive year, global music sales have flourished, online streaming has become the record industry's most profitable revenue source, and artists are still rarely compensated at an equitable rate exceeding the time and investment they have put into their craft. Nothing revelatory there, but maybe this news points to a possible shift in the pervasiveness of international music piracy. Maybe. On the other hand, festivals continue to draw ire each time someone tragically ove...

Perfect Letter for All Eeda (Egg) Loving Bawajis

A write up by a parsi mother to her son! Perfect letter for all eeda (Eggs) loving bawas!! Dear Son, Today I am writing to you about a strange topic. Eggs. After all, what kind of a Parsi caterer would I be if I didn’t try to squeeze in our favourite ‘Eedu’ into just about any conversation possible. Right now the only kind of eggs you have tried is in a tomato omelette but I am hoping that your Parsi genes will awaken and soon you will want to try every kind of eggs possible. So here is a list o...

UMass Amherst computer scientists offer new techniques to measure social bias in software

Brun says, "Unchecked, biases in data and software run the risk of perpetuating biases in society. For example, prior work has demonstrated that racial bias exists in online advertising delivery systems, where online searches for traditionally-minority names were more likely to yield ads related to arrest records. Such software behavior can contribute to racial stereotypes and other grave societal consequences."

13 clever jokes from Google that probably went right over your head (GOOG, GOOGL)

Google frequently makes us giggle with the geeky ways it handles things. Like the time it rewarded the man who managed to buy the "Google.com" domain for one minute: Google gave researcher Sanmay Ved $6,006.13, choosing that specific amount because it spells out Google, numerically — "squint a little and you'll see it!" the company said. This kind of quirky antic has become almost par for the course for the search giant, which has long been down for a little nerdy fun. "Googleyness" is all about...

Viseart Petit Pro (01) Eyeshadow Palette

Petit Pro (01) Viseart Petit Pro (01) Palette ($30.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a miniature-sized, slim palette. This would be a good way to try the Viseart formula without breaking the bank; there is plenty of product in each pan, and each shade is quite pigmented so you’ll be able to get plenty of use out of it. The matte eyeshadows blended and layered well with the denser, more shimmery eyeshadows. The shimmery eyeshadows felt smoother and more cream-like compared to past shimmer finishes from ...

Astrology Tips - unaspected planets

An unaspected planet is like a dog off a lead.... How do you interpret unaspected planets? Are they easy t o get a handle on, o r do you find them confusing and challengin g? Using astrological psychology it's clear to see that an unaspect ed planet is one which is no t connected at all to any of the aspects in the chart . MAC Pillars Eyeshadow Quad

MAC Pillars Eyeshadow Quad MAC Pillars Eyeshadow Quad ($33.00 for 0.19 oz.) is a new, limited edition quad that will be available online on May 26th, and in select stores on June 2nd. The quad contains two permanent shades–Mystery and Carbon–and frankly, Sandstone is so close to Cork (permanent) that it might as well be an all-permanent quad (I imagine most readers will have a beige eyeshadow that would function similarly to Mother’s Milk). The colors work well together, and it creates a smok...

[Research Article] The TopoVIB-Like protein family is required for meiotic DNA double-strand break formation

Meiotic recombination is induced by the formation of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) catalyzed by SPO11, the ortholog of subunit A of TopoVI DNA topoisomerase (TopoVIA). TopoVI activity requires the interaction between A and B subunits. We identified a conserved family of plant and animal proteins [the TOPOVIB-Like (TOPOVIBL) family] that share strong structural similarity to the TopoVIB subunit of TopoVI DNA topoisomerase. We further characterize the meiotic recombination proteins Rec102 (Sacch...

Tour de France 2015: stage four – as it happened

Tony Martin powered home from 2km out to grab the yellow jersey and stage victory, but Chris Froome maintained the lead over his main GC rivals 4.46pm BST Tony Martin takes the yellow jersey and a 12sec GC lead from Froome, with Van Garderen third overall. Contador is down in eighth, 48secs back. It’s difficult to pick a more deserving winner given just how close he had come in the past two days. Mark Cavendish and the rest of his team-mates are there at the line with a nice show of unity, c...
