This week’s best deals include Catalina Island boat and hotel packages, a new shopping aid and more

The range of deals is winding down as we edge closer to the new year, but one thing that abounds is gift card offers. Many restaurants will give you a free bonus card when you purchase a gift card for a select amount by the end of December. You could use the card as a little extra holiday present or tuck it away for a treat for yourself, however, I really like what one of my friends does. She carries fast food gift cards with a small value on them, usually $10 or less, in her wallet and gives th...

Saudade: the untranslatable word for the presence of absence

'I pray for friends I've lost, family, like my uncle who passed away,' Bruno told me. We were chatting in the nave of the Church of the Santa Cruz of the Souls of the Hanged, a small Catholic church in central São Paulo. Built near the old city gallows, regulars go there to pray to the dead. 'When I'm here, I feel well,' he said. 'I even feel that the other side is well.' Bruno told me there was something special about the place, that it left him with a 'sensation'. 'The fact that you're remembe...

As California struggles to house the homeless, some neighbors say ‘welcome’

On a bright recent morning, Van Thomas was holding forth from his front porch in Central Los Angeles, alongside his mixed-breed dog, Princess. “I’ve been a part of this neighborhood for 45 years,” he said. “I grew up playing ball across the street.” Thomas has seen a world of change sweep through the area over the years, the latest occurring in a small, century-old complex of buildings right next door. A health-care center is opening there for as many as 62 people newly released from the hospita...

The Bruno works as a toaster, a barbecue grill, and also a table oven!

Arguably an iPhone moment for toasters, the Bruno isn’t three separate appliances, but rather a 3-in-1. Looking nothing like a toaster, or an oven, and probably a little like a grill, the Bruno replaces three appliances with one, and adds a splash of vibrancy and color while doing so.The Bruno comes as a clamshell appliance with a lid that hinges back when you open it. With heating coils on the base as well as the lid, you can use the Bruno just like an oven (except this opens differently) by ev...

Bella Thorne & Jessie T. Usher in Trailer for Uber Horror Thriller 'Ride'

"Sometimes when you trust your impulses, incredible things can happen." RLJE Films has released an official trailer for a horror thriller titled Ride, which is indeed a horror movie about ride-sharing apps (like Uber and Lyft). I knew they'd make one of these films one day, and here it is, and it looks as bad as I thought it would. Just so cheesy and unnecessary and an exaggeration of the horror of car services, because why not, let's scare everyone and make them even more paranoid. Ride is ...
