My New Plan: Work And Toil / Eliminate Retirement

This month marks the 13th year that I’ve been known as the “Lazy Man.” I’ve been known to answer to that name. (I didn’t reveal any other name on this site for years.) Call it superstition of #13, but I’ve been having a change of heart. Instead of being lazy and making my money work for me, maybe it’s best for me to continue to work and toil. I’m going to start to eliminate retirement thoughts completely. Why have I decided to change my mind? I can’t quite put my finger on it. I find it im...

Warren Buffett Accidentally Bought Too Much Delta Stock

Buffett got back into airline investing two years ago, not quite convinced that major carriers had become 'high quality industrials' as Delta likes to argue just that the business is better than it used to be. Berkshire Hathaway promptly lost over a billion dollars on these investments. Nonetheless a month ago there were rumors he was going to buy Southwest Airlines in its entirety and that drove up the airline's share price. Warren Buffett is still a big Apple bull, but he famously uses a flip phone instead of an iPhone

Warren Buffett shared his thoughts on Apple following its big event on Monday in interviews with Yahoo Finance and CNBC. He said Apple is a long-term investment, adding that: "If you have to closely follow a company, you shouldn't own it." Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway owns a 5.4% stake in Apple, but he famously doesn't use an iPhone — or any smartphone for that matter. He uses a flip phone instead. Apple shares fell by as much as 2.2% on March 25 following its star-studded event, during which...

Trail Mix – Kevin Daniel

Don’t all singer-songwriters have roots in bluegrass, punk, ska, jazz, and acapella groups? Maybe not, but North Carolina’s Kevin Daniel surely does. With roots in classical music dating back to his early elementary years, Daniel has arrived at his guitar driven folk rock after adventuring across the musical landscape for the last twenty years. As “Pour Me A Drink” suggests, the end results have been well worth it. This latest single is a folky acoustic ode with some rock and roll brass,...

Another court’s pension punt hurts reform prospects and voting rights

When billionaire investor Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway makes financial predictions, savvy people tend to listen given his long and successful financial career – not to mention his occasional prescience regarding political events. The courts and lawmakers should have been listening last month when Buffett, asked about the nation’s growing unfunded liabilities during a CNBC interview, offered some sobering reflections. “If I were relocating into some state that had a huge unfunded pension ...

The Importance of Discipline

--> One of the most popular misconceptions in the world is that those who end up being the most successful somehow achieve this success through shortcuts, not through working hard. Each time someone is able to achieve incredible success without a lot of work and with some luck, multiple news stories are generated about it and the person becomes almost legendary for their instant success. Why? Because it is so rare and it gives people an incredible amount of hope. People want to feel they can get...

Warren Buffett CNBC Interview 2019 Full Video, Full Transcript, and Notes

I’m one of the many folks who like to keep up with Warren Buffett content to see if there is any wisdom to be gained. After the release of the 2019 Berkshire Hathaway shareholder letter, Buffett did a 2-hour interview with Becky Quick of CNBC. While I don’t like when CNBC encourages average folks to treat investing like sports betting, I do appreciate that they offer up the entire interview online along with a full transcript. Here are my personal notes after both watching (listening, act...

Why Warren Buffett’s big-deficit advice doesn’t add up

Warren Buffett, whose practical command of the American economy has long been the envy of investors, and Larry Summers, a Harvard economics professor, former president of Harvard and former secretary of the Treasury, have recently said that United States government deficits don’t matter much. This is dangerous advice, all the more so because neither man is viewed as on the wacky fringe of public policy.  Democratic and Republican leaders will alike heed their advice — but to America’s detriment....
