Who Wants This War with Iran?

Who Wants This War with Iran? U.S.A. –-(Ammoland.com)- Speaking on state TV of the prospect of a war in the Gulf, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei seemed to dismiss the idea. “There won't be any war. … We don't seek a war, and (the Americans) don't either. They know it's not in their interests.” The ayatollah's analysis — war is in neither nation's interest — is correct. Consider the consequences of a war with the United States for his own country. Iran's hundreds of swift boats and h...

Learning another language should be compulsory in every school

In the 1960s, in our public schools in California along the border with Mexico, Spanish language-learning was a requirement, beginning in sixth grade. I couldn't wait to get to sixth grade to start learning Spanish. Our school was more than 50 per cent Mexican-Americans, and I was keen to understand them as they switched back and forth from fluent English to fluent Spanish (or, as they called it, 'Mexican'). As I began to learn it, my friends asked if I spoke Spanish at home. No, just in school....

Did The Game Pass By Ken Holland?

I am about to end the Ken Holland era in Detroit at A2Y, I may post a few more items  but the majority of the Edmonton talk will be posted in the KK Hockey section. from Mark Spector of Sportsnet, The knock on Holland, coming almost exclusively from people who haven’t been lucky enough to get to know the man, is that his last few seasons in Detroit are proof that the game has passed him by. So let’s take that on. Mistake No. 1: There was a lot of loyalty in Detroit to those who help...

There’s a whole stack of Kindle deals you’ll want to work through today. (Yesterday on the blog: Between Life and Death) The Gospel of Inclusion is Far Too Narrow Trevin Wax: “What put Christianity in the crosshairs of Caesar and the Roman authorities was this explosive combination of inclusivity and exclusivity—this little group of people who insisted on the exclusive claim that Jesus is the only way, not the idols of Rome, and also issued an inclusive call to everyone, rega...

Are We Living in a Post-Christian World?

It has been said that our world is becoming a “post-Christian” world. This means that, over the course of recent generations, there has been an observed decline in the Church’s influence over society. Christianity is no longer the dominant religion in many places where it used to be, giving way to a secularist worldview under which more and more people are seeing religious faith and morality as not only optional and outdated but even disagreeable. The concept of morality can be difficult to ...

Billionaires under fire confront wealth gap at Milken Conference

By Katia Porzecanski, Gillian Tan and Sonali Basak, Bloomberg In Beverly Hills, the chicken Caesar salad costs $25.95. Stephen Schwarzman, with a net worth of $14.3 billion, could buy one for all 329 million people in the U.S. today — and then do so again tomorrow for 222 million of them. The wealth on display this week at the annual Davos-style conference organized by Michael Milken, once of junk-bond fame, is capturing a moment in our age of growing inequality. For the first time in Milken Ins...

Barbecue is finger-lickin’ good at Mom’s in Van Nuys and Big Pop’s in Pacoima

Dare I suggest, do we have a thing for restaurants named for Moms and Pops? There’s a pizza chain called Big Mama’s and Papa’s that famously delivered pizzas onstage to the Oscars. I once went on a roadtrip through the South, stopping at nothing but diners and ’que shops named Mom’s and Pop’s — or some variation thereof. (At one of the Mom’s Cafes, memorably, they told me they couldn’t serve ham ’n’ eggs…because they had run out of grits!) And do we have Mom’s and Pop’s here in the San Fernando ...

Poppy Seed Dressing

One of my favorite throw-together-quickly lunches involves topping a bed of greens with whatever fruit I have (berries, grapes, mandarin slices, etc.), a big handful of cooked pasta, and drizzle of dressing. That’s it. Super simple, super filling, and overall pretty dang healthy. And one of my very favorite (and easy to make at home) dressings is poppy seed dressing. It’s bright and flavorful and I love it on almost any random salad ingredients I end up using. Personally, my favorite poppy seed ...

Study the New Testament with N.T. Wright

There’s no better way to grow in your faith than to get God’s Word into each day—or rather, to let God’s Word get into you. To gain a truly deep understanding of the Bible, you have to learn to study it inductively—to suspend judgment about a text’s message and let the text speak for itself. That’s exactly what N.T. Wright shows you how to do in his For Everyone New Testament Bible Study Guides (19 vols.). A sought-after commentator, author, and research professor, Wright has had a profound...

Leaked, "highly classified" French report shows that the slaughter in Yemen depends on US support

Last September, the French Directorate of Military Intelligence prepared a "highly classified" report on the Saudi war in Yemen to brief the "restricted council" of cabinet-level officials; the report has been obtained by the French media organization Disclose, which has published it jointly with The Intercept and four other French media organizations. The report paints a damning picture of western complicity in the Saudi war. It lays out how the Saudis are completely dependent on US arms s...
