Flames Giordano: Leadership on & off the Ice

This 2018-19 National Hockey League season has been full of surprises for the Calgary Flames. From railroading the competition all the way to the top of the Western Conference, ranking No. 2 overall in the entire NHL, to overseeing multiple breakout seasons from its array of emerging players, this Calgary hockey club has been navigating unfamiliar territory in more ways than one. Case in point is the career season of team captain Mark Giordano, who, like so many of his teammates, has been blazin...

Avalanche at the Midpoint – Some Good & Some Bad

45 games into the Colorado Avalanche’s season, their woes continue and the speculation mounts on why the team is struggling. It’s worth the time to step back from the ledge and analyze what’s really happened at the midway point.  Yes, the team has gone 1-7-2 in their last 10 games. Since Dec. 1, the Avalanche have gone 5-11-3 and fallen to a wild card spot after contending for a first-place spot in the division earlier in the season. There are reasons for concern. But there is also time an...

Week Fifteen Newsletter

Heading into Sunday's action, it didn't really seem like we had much of a Player of the Week race, but the games started happening and then we went from one player with 7 points to three players and then after the late games we had four or five players with 7 points and one player standing alone with 8 points and that was Calgary's Mark Giordano. Giordano started off the week with an assist [Author: Clayton Corley]

Flames’ Frolik Responds Strong

The Calgary Flames will be looking to continue their winning ways tonight when they play host to the Arizona Coyotes and attempt to maintain the positive momentum of what’s been a successful homestand so far. The Flames, led by veteran forward Michael Frolik, once again displayed their flare for third-period dramatics in their latest contest by rallying to earn a 4-3 victory against the Florida Panthers. Frolik being a driving force in the team’s fourth straight win seemed an unlikely develop...

Avalanche coach, star center appear to make peace

MONTREAL (AP) — Colorado Avalanche star center Nathan MacKinnon and coach Jared Bednar appear to have made peace. Backlund’s Game Rounding Into Form Nicely

The Calgary Flames have enjoyed the luxury of having major offensive weapons to rely on during what’s been an outstanding 2018-19 campaign so far. The bad news for the rest of their Western Conference counterparts is that one of their understated depth scorers, Mikael Backlund, is starting to contribute more consistently. Backlund hit the score sheet with his tenth goal of the season in a 5-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche to kick off the Flames’ latest homestand on a positive note. The 29-year...

Sharks Rally Late Past Golden Knights

LAS VEGAS — Melker Karlsson and Joonas Donskoi scored third-period goals 39 seconds apart to lift the San Jose Sharks over the Vegas Golden Knights 3-2 on Thursday night. San Jose won its fifth straight and ended the Golden Knights’ seven-game winning streak. The Sharks (59 points) leapfrogged Vegas in the Pacific Division standings and are one point behind Calgary for the top spot. Brent Burns’ shot from the point rebounded perfectly to Karlsson, who found a wide open net to tie it 2-2. Donskoi...

WBW Motorcycle Preview: 2019 KTM 790 Adventure R

KTM’s New ADV Class Game Changer I spent the last two days at the Calgary Motorcycle Show gawking longingly at what is slated to be my next motorcycle. I put a deposit down on one back in November without even knowing the price or having seen it in person. Am I completely nuts? Crazy like a fox as it turns out! When the confirmed production bike specs were released in November 2018 at EICMA along with welcomed news of 2019 availability the situation escalated into high gear at my local dealersh...

What its Like to Heli Hike in the Cariboos

You don’t hear much about the Cariboos – a group of rugged, remote mountains in east-central British Columbia at the northern end of the Columbia Mountains, about 100 kilometres due west of Mount Robson Provincial Park. There’s a reason for that. Unless you have a helicopter or you’re exceptionally skilled in the backcountry, the area is basically off-limits.  Being whisked around this landscape is a huge thrill But as a guest of CMH, owners and operators of the Cariboo Lodge, I am one of t...

The Ongoing Rebuild In Edmonton

from Robert Tychkowski at the Edmonton Sun, Watching Connor McDavid trying to drag this organization into the playoffs is like watching Secretariat attached to a plow. You can’t take your eyes off a spectacular horse, but it’s hard to look at. And it’s nothing new. There have been some great young players come through here during the 12-year rebuild, most of them asked to do too much too soon with too little help. Instead of getting the kind of support that blue-chip prospects in ...

MacKinnon, Bednar exchange venom on bench of struggling Avalanche

Things have reached more than a mild simmer with the Colorado Avalanche. While dropping their eighth game over the last nine on Wednesday night in Calgary, cameras caught superstar centre Nathan MacKinnon and head coach Jared Bednar barking venomously at one another on the Avalanche bench. It's unclear what caused the blow-up (neither was apparently asked about it after the game) or exactly what was said, but the exchange of pointed words was intense enough for MacKinnon to literally fall o...

Video- An Unhappy Nathan MacKinnon On The Colorado Bench Last Night

via Sportsnet's YouTube page, Nathan MacKinnon was not a happy camper after his team gave up a late goal to the Flames, seemingly saying to his coach, “Do your job.” I did try to find additional information on this without success.  The Denver Post did not have a reporter on scene, instead goind with an AP game story, the Avs website posted Jared Bedner post-game, he did not address it and the Calgary newspapers had nothing on the incident. The Avs lost the game 5-3.

They’re all missing from the lineup with long-term injuries. Coyotes Licking Their Wounds Schmaltz and Demers, a top-nine center and a top-four defenseman, respectively, are likely out for the rest of the season with lower-body injuries. Dvorak, another top-nine center who underwent surgery to repair an upper-body injury, will probably finish 2018-19 witho...

Is Gaudreau Making a Case for MVP?

Johnny Gaudreau is having a season for the ages. Add to the fraction that the Calgary Flames are sitting atop the Western Conference 44 games into the season — a feat the franchise hasn’t accomplished since 1993 – and the Salem, N.J. native’s campaign looks even more special. His 35 points (16 goals, 19 assists) since Dec. 1 makes him the league’s top scorer since. Similarly, in his last 25 games, he has 20 goals and 25 assists, leading Calgary to its most recent hot streak. This offensive...

Canada's housing market is slowly but surely imploding, and Canadians are more exposed that the US was in 2008

After 20 years of unprecedented lows, Canada's central bank is gradually raising rates; this, combined with strict rules on new loans, empty house taxes in overheated cities like Vancouver, and mandatory ownership disclosures (which keep money launderers out of the market) are depressing the Canadian housing market, and the prognosis is not good. Canada's economy is heavily dependent on construction (8% of the job market) and consumer spending, and both of these will fall as cheap capital e...
