Flames Cleaning Up Some Bad Habits

The issue of complacency has been on the mind of Calgary Flames head coach Bill Peters for a while now. After all, when things are going well, it is easy to want to relax, ease up on the gas pedal and just “enjoy the ride.” Even the best of teams are vulnerable to succumbing to this allure of resting on one’s laurels. Calgary is no exception. As of late, the Flames’ accomplishments have been piling up, with much temptation to simply sit back and enjoy the spoils. At this moment, Calgary le...

While it’s been Monahan’s dynamic linemate Johnny Gaudreau and captain...

Flames Surge to the Top Powered by Potent Power Play

CALGARY — A propellant in the Calgary Flames’ surge to the top of the NHL’s Western Conference is a power play with pop. Calgary’s man advantage was not a strength last season, when the Flames finished tied for third-last in the NHL in that department. It took a few weeks for Calgary’s power play to build steam under new coaches this season, but the Flames have scored a league-leading 12 goals with a man advantage so far in January. In December 1995, the Calgary Flames traded Joe Nieuwendyk to the Dallas Stars for Corey Millen and a promising junior player. Wings Come Out On The Short End In Loss To Calgary

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News, There’s been a lot of losses this season — and the Red Wings will surely have more these last couple months — but this was a particular galling one. Twice the Wings had leads in the third period, and for stretches Friday they outplayed the Western Conference-leading Calgary Flames, only to ultimately lose 6-4. This was fun hockey, a throwback, wide-open game to an era of hockey played long ago. But the Wings would have simply enjoyed to hav...

Matt Dumba's 'anger' led to indefinite stint on sidelines

Fans of the Minnesota Wild would have wished that Matt Dumba wouldn't have thrown a “wild punch” at Matthew Tkachuk in a game against the Calgary Flames on Dec. 15. Dumba, wearing a brace around his right arm, told reporters that he didn't feel the pain of the injury until he had a chance to calm down in the penalty box. Dumba's surgery came on Dec. 26 and along with it, a three-month timetable to return.

Big Road Win For The Buffalo Sabres

from Lance Lysowski of the Buffalo News, Jack Eichel would not be denied. His Buffalo Sabres teammates felt the same way from puck drop Wednesday night in Scotiabank Saddledome. With the puck on the blade of his stick and the game on the line, Eichel passed over a line change and skated slowly through the neutral zone. He then picked up his pace into the right faceoff circle and fired a wrist shot over David Rittich's shoulder. That goal 1:10 into overtime gave the Sabres a 4-...

Revisiting Doug Armstrong’s Drafts – 2011

A few weeks ago, we began to review the St. Louis Blues’ drafts under general manager Doug Armstrong, starting in 2010. That was a good draft, as the Blues selected Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Tarasenko in the first round, but was weaker in the later rounds. The 2011 Entry Draft was just the opposite. Having surrendered their first-round pick in the trade that sent Erik Johnson to the Colorado Avalanche, the Blues were forced to make due with a bevy of picks in rounds two through seven, but in h...

What the Flames Need at the Deadline

After a 7-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Jan. 13, the Calgary Flames won their 30th game of the season — seven short of their win total from a season ago — and stretching their record to 30-13-4 through 47 games. They are in the top spot of the Pacific Division as well as the Western Conference and rank second in the NHL behind the Tampa Bay Lightning. People thought the Flames would improve over their 37-35-10 record from 2017-18 and many would have said they’d be a playoff team as...
