Tkachuk Brothers Share First All-Star Game in Their Hometown

ST. LOUIS — Brady Tkachuk didn’t mind cutting his vacation to the Bahamas short. Tkachuk, a 20-year-old forward for the Ottawa Senators, was planning on a couple of days of fun in the sun before going to St. Louis to watch his older brother, Matthew, represent the Calgary Flames at NHL All-Star Weekend. But Toronto’s Auston Matthews couldn’t play in the game because of a wrist injury, and Brady was chosen as his replacement. Tkachuk boarded the next flight, trading the topical weather for ...

Shocking win over Heritage Christian shows Village Christian basketball is on the rise

Support our high school sports coverage by becoming a digital subscriber. Subscribe now. Village Christian boys basketball coach Julian Andrade stood astutely as the starting lineups for Tuesday night’s game against Olympic League rival Heritage Christian were being announced. Andrade’s assistant leaned over and said, “Look at how small we are…” As if Andrade didn’t already know that 6-foot-2 freshman Thomas Luczak – the tallest player in the lineup – was being towered by Heritage Christian ce...

Marcell Ozuna signing with Braves rules out potential suitor for Kris Bryant

When former Braves third baseman Josh Donaldson signed with the Twins last week, one thought was Atlanta could pivot and try to acquire Kris Bryant to fill the void in their lineup. That possibility looks less likely now, as the Braves announced Tuesday they've signed former Cardinals outfielder Marcell Ozuna to a one-year, $18 million deal. The Braves didn't have a dire need for a third baseman - 22-year-old Austin Riley, a former top prospect, is waiting in the wings - so much as the...

2020 Angels spring training preview: bullpen

As the Angels head toward the first workout of spring training on Feb. 12, we are providing a breakdown of how they stand with their roster. Players acquired this winter include the method of their acquisition in parentheses. This week, the bullpen. (Previously: the rotation): 2019 RECAP The Angels’ bullpen was a strength at times in 2019, but the failure of the starters to get deep in games – or Manager Brad Ausmus’ reluctance to let them try – forced the bullpen to handle a heavy workload. C...

Whicker: No winners in Spyball scandal, not even the Dodgers

The Houston Astros were not brought to justice. General manager Jeff Luhnow should have been exiled for five years. Their share of national TV revenue should have been revoked and reallocated among the other 29 clubs. They should have lost the entire 2020 and 2021 drafts, not just the first two picks. All their 2020 games against the Angels should be canceled. Okay, too harsh. Given all that, spare us the petitions on behalf of the Dodgers. They did not lose the 2017 and 2018 World Series becaus...

MLB rumors: A's free-agent target Matt Wieters returning to Cardinals

The A's could use a veteran catcher on their major league roster, but Matt Wieters will not be that guy. The veteran catcher will be returning to the St. Louis Cardinals, MLB Network's Jon Heyman reported Sunday. A little over a week ago, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported, citing sources, that Wieters was drawing interest from the A's and Cardinals.

Johnson, No. 11 Louisville earn win at No. 3 Duke 79-73

Freshman David Johnson had a season-high 19 points and No. 11 Louisville hung on down the stretch to beat No. 3 Duke 79-73 on Saturday night in a key matchup in the Atlantic Coast Conference's regular-season title chase. Malik Williams added two free throws with 16 seconds left and followed immediately with a transition dunk off a turnover, a sequence that all but sealed a grind-it-out win for the Cardinals in the Blue Devils' famously hostile home arena. More impressively, the Cardina...

Kyler Murray floored by praise from Larry Fitzgerald

When Larry Fitzgerald decided to come back for a 17th season, he cited the development of quarterback Kyler Murray as one of the reasons. After announcing his decision to come back for another year, Fitzgerald spoke glowingly of Murray in an interview with the Golf Channel. Hearing that, and seeing Fitzgerald tweet about the Cardinals' young core on offense was gratifying for Murray.

Whicker: MLB’s punishment of Astros was the least it could do

Jeff Luhnow believed he was smarter than baseball. That belief was suspended on Monday, as was Luhnow. He is no longer the general manager of the Houston Astros, who, in winning the World Series in 2017 and the American League pennant in 2019, tried to spook the game. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred suspended Luhnow for one season. In an eruption of conscience rarely seen in owners, Jim Crane fired Luhnow. Manager A.J. Hinch got the same suspension and dismissal. The Astros were fined $5 million an...

49ers Defensive Focus Is On Stopping Dalvin Cook

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) – The San Francisco 49ers defense features a fearsome pass rush, a shut-down cornerback in Richard Sherman and a group of safeties and linebackers that excel in pass coverage. So it’s no surprise that teams look to the run when they attack it. That figures to be the case Saturday when the Niners must deal with one of the game’s most dangerous backs in Dalvin Cook as they host the Minnesota Vikings in a divisional round playoff game. “Coming into this game, throughout the...

Hoornstra: MLB punishing alleged sign stealers is more difficult than banging a trash can

In his book, “A Game of Inches: The Stories Behind the Innovations that Shaped Baseball,” author Peter Morris writes that the cat-and-mouse game “between sign-givers and sign-stealers” in baseball began in the ’80s. The 1880s, that is. The Brooklyn Bridegrooms, ancestors of today’s Dodgers, finished in first place in their league in 1889 and 1890. Morris writes that Brooklyn shortstop George Smith credited the Bridegrooms’ success to stealing their opponents’ signs – a practice as legal then as ...

Getting ahead of ourselves: What about Vikings at Packers for a Super Bowl spot?

It's amazing the difference a week makes. We've gone from "nobody is giving the Vikings a chance to win a game" (to paraphrase Mike Zimmer and a lot of local fans) to "could they make a playoff run?" all on the strength of one imperfect but impressive victory at New Orleans. The Vikings have already beaten the NFC team that, according to some advanced metrics like Pro Football Focus' overall rating and Football Outsiders DVOA, was the best in the conference. So sure, why couldn't they take down ...

Ten Things To Know: Recapping a wild Saturday in college hoops

We know it's not North Carolina — more on them in a bit — and until Virginia figures out what they are doing on the offensive end of the floor, I can't in good conscience call them the second-best team in the league. I thought it would be Louisville, but on Saturday, the 7th-ranked Cardinals lost, 78-65, to No. Florida State in the Yum!

Chris Carson won’t need hip surgery

“As a matter of fact, I saw Chris yesterday and he was in very good spirits because of that,” Carroll said, via Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR and PFT. Carson injured his hip in Week 16 against the Cardinals, ending his season. The Seahawks also have placed two of his backups, C.J. Prosise (arm) and Rashaad Penny (knee) on injured reserve.

LA VERNE >> In early December when Santa Clarita Christian played No. 1 Sierra Canyon, guard Ty Harper drove to the basket and elevated at 7-foot-3 center Harold Yu attempting to dunk. After Rams fall short of playoffs, it’s the season for sharing disappointment, blame

THOUSAND OAKS — The Christmas lights and inflatable Grinch were gone from the Rams’ locker room Monday, replaced by cardboard boxes and giant plastic trash bags as players packed up belongings amid little holiday cheer or laughter. The Rams also began to unpack a year of inconsistency and contradiction that ended a victory short of the playoffs after Sunday’s win over the Arizona Cardinals in the Rams’ final game at the Coliseum. At their healthy best, the 2019 Rams were good enough to dominate ...

FAQ: How does the Vikings' playoff path look -- and why are they going to Seattle again in 2020?

The 49ers' last-minute victory over the Seahawks on Sunday night settled the Vikings' schedule for both this year's NFC playoffs and the 2020 regular season. They will play the third-seeded Saints in New Orleans for the wild-card round on Sunday, and they will head to Seattle for the third straight season in 2020, to face the Seahawks sometimes in the regular season. There seems to be enough consternation about the scheduling process — and enough frustration over another trip to Seattle — that i...

Eric Weddle says Rams’ future is ‘bright’ but probably doesn’t include him

LOS ANGELES — Eric Weddle left the Coliseum field with tears in his eyes as he talked with players on both teams and posed for pictures, a veteran football warrior knowing the Rams’ victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday this probably was his last battle. The popular free safety dropped his strongest hints yet that he’s ready to retire, even with one year and $4.25 million left on his contract, after 13 seasons with the San Diego Chargers, Baltimore Ravens and Rams. “I’m not going to come ...
