Rapt Studio—the interdisciplinary firm known for designing the office spaces of some of the world's biggest brands, from HBO to Dropbox—makes their Salone debut with "Tell Me More," an immersive two-part installation at Ventura Centrale. The installation guides visitors through two spaces, an "arrival chamber" (which looks more inviting than it sounds) and a lounge area. A Weekend in Montreal

I went away to Montreal with a friend last month. We took the train from Toronto, and it was just a lovely little trip all around – it was the first time I’d been away from our son for so long, and it was nice to have a bit of time away, but still hard and a bit of an adjustment. After the five hour train ride into Central Station, we walked over to LOV for a late dinner. It was a Friday night, so unsurprisingly, they were busy, but luckily could accommodate us after only a short wait. We ba...

My Top 10 Hostels in Sydney in 2019

Updated: 1/9/2019 | January 9th, 2019 Hostels in Sydney are expensive. Since I started visiting the city, I’ve seen hostel prices skyrocket as just the cost of living in Australia has gone up. Even when you factor in the favorable exchange rate right now, it’s just expensive to get a bed here, especially at some of the larger, more upscale hostels. However, with a little planning, you can make sure you’re getting the most bang for your buck. The cheapest hostels in Sydney are found in the K...

My 24 Favorite Hostels in Europe

Just updated on: 08/02/2018 | August 2nd, 2018 I’ve been staying in hostels in Europe for over twelve years. I’ve probably stayed at close to a thousand by now. Some were wonderful; others I couldn’t leave quick enough. Some have stood the test of time while others have long since vanished. The hostel scene is very popular and established in Europe, and the growing “luxury” hostel trend that incorporates more amenities (and higher prices) for travelers. Hostels today aren’t the hostels you foun...

Need a hygge? Try Copenhagen for a happiness fix

With its startling architecture and world class food the Danish capital is all about enjoying the good life … at a price. Our writer is also struck by the story behind a statue – and it’s not of a mermaidI arrived at Copenhagen’s Central Station with Danny Kaye’s voice blaring in my head. Maybe he was right when he sang about wonderful Copenhagen. When you get off the train, after a 15-minute journey from the airport you are greeted by the turrets and rollercoasters of a huge theme park. Within ...

My Favorite Australian Hostels

I love Australia. It’s one of my favorite countries in the world. I’ve been going for over a decade and have crossed the country more times than I’ve criss-crossed my own. I’ve stayed in countless hostels throught Australia and, today, want to share some of my favorites. Base St. Kilda (Melbourne) Base is like the McDonald’s of hostels. You get full but you’re not really satisfied. Yet McDonald’s (Base) outdid themselves with their Melbourne hostel. It’s my favorite hostel in Australia. The b...

Spend less and see more in Amsterdam

Many people come to Amsterdam intent on visiting every landmark they’ve ever heard about from friends, family, classroom history, and their Lonely Planet guidebook. Gotta see the Anne Frank House. Can’t miss the Van Gogh Museum. Must catch Rembrandt’s Night Watch at the Rijksmuseum. And on and on. But making a beeline down Amsterdam’s tourist track can be a costly pitfall. While depleting your energy and wallet, visiting one famous attraction after another can leave little time for soaking up ...

33 Photos that Will Make You Want to Visit Milan

Well known as one of the world’s fashion capitals and a longstanding business hub in Europe, there still are only a limited number of foreign tourists who plan to visit Milan, particularly if it’s their first trip to Italy. The land of “La Dolce Vita” is one of the most fantasized destinations in the world, but while Rome, Florence, Venice, the Cinque Terre, and the Amalfi Coast captivate everyone’s imagination, Milan is hardly on the radar. A must-see when ...

Best budget hotels in Munich for 2018

Munich has a lot to offer to budget travelers. Restaurants and shops abound, and the leafy streets and gorgeous buildings create a refined, elegant scene. And if you are looking for more hustle and bustle, Munich has that too. During Oktoberfest, you’ll also see the wild side of the city. Sure, Munich is pretty affordable, and that goes for hotels too. But not all budget hotels are the same, and we certainly don’t want you to sacrifice your nice vacation just to save a dime. Read more about visi...

A Photographer’s Guide To Frankfurt

Among European cities, Frankfurt would not probably be high on a first choice list for photographers. Consider the competition, London, Paris, Rome and many more. The city itself was extensively bombed during World War II and little original remains. From the destruction, however, Frankfurt re-invented itself as a financial capital, First of the re-emerging West Germany then in more recent years as the epicenter of the EU’s financial dealings. With money comes modern skyscrapers, and it is these...

Now Wary Of Holding Big Rallies, White Nationalists Resort To Tiny ‘Flash Mobs'

White nationalist Richard Spencer says he first learned of “flash mobs” from a viral YouTube video that showed dozens of people twirling around Antwerp, Belgium’s Central Station in a spontaneous, coordinated performance of the Sound of Music’s “Do-Re-Mi.” He told TPM he’s trying to adapt that absurdist concept for an entirely different purpose: unannounced public expressions of pro-Confederate, white nationalist sentiment, like Saturday’s in Charlottesville, Virginia. Both the last-minute ral...

Dodging Downpours in Copenhagen

If I had to give 2017 a theme it would have to be cheap flights. Thanks to having a base in Portugal, which made return flights a viable option for the first time in six years, I’ve been bashing out round-trips at incredibly inexpensive prices this year. My flight to the U.S. was no different. I try to visit the States at least once a year, because I adore how beautiful, diverse, and delicious the country is. I always fall harder and harder for the US with each visit, and after having an amazing...

Stockholm subway art

THE STOCKHOLLM SUBWAY SYSTEM has been called the ‘world’s longest art exhibit’ with over 90 of the city’s 100 subway stations decorated with installations from over 150 artists. I did some research and learned that during the summer months there are free guided art walks of the subway system. I didn’t end up taking these, but they could be a great option for anyone who is interested in having a commentary on the art inside the stations. Instead, I listed 5 of the most interesting-looking station...
