Listen to Meryl Streep Rap in Ryan Murphy’s ‘The Prom’, and Despair

It’s been a very rough year. We’re almost at the end, folks, but if you thought we were going to make it to 2021 without having to hear Meryl Streep rap, you were sorely mistaken. Streep is one of the cast members of The Prom, Ryan Murphy’s adaptation of Chad Beguelin, Bob Martin, and Matthew Sklar‘s award-winning, Tony-nominated Broadway musical, and as is par for the course with most stage-to-screen adaptations, there’s a new original song not featured in the Broadway production. It’s called ...

‘The Prom’ Trailer: Ryan Murphy Has a Full Blown Glitzy and Glamorous Musical Here

It’s been a little while since we had a full-blown musical on the big screen. Unfortunately, with studios still hesitant to send movie to theaters due to the coronavirus, that will probably be the case for a little while longer. But Netflix will help remedy that by sending Ryan Murphy‘s big adaptation of the Broadway musical The Prom to limited theaters and their streaming library on the same day in December, and the first trailer has just arrived. Prepare for a lot of glitz and glamour, folks....

Broadway Rewind: THE WEDDING SINGER Says 'I Do' on Broadway!

But first, the episode starts off with a look at The Wedding Singer, based on the popular Adam Sandler film. It starred newcomer Stephen Lynch and joining him in the role of Julie, the waitress with a heart of gold, was one Broadway's loveliest leading ladies, Laura Benanti. The musical features a score by Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin and a book by Begluin and Tim Herlihy. How Broadway’s ‘The Prom’ Is Fostering LGBTQ Acceptance

Before seeing the Broadway musical “The Prom,” the father of one cast member was prejudiced about the LGBTQ community. After seeing the show, he now goes after homophobic trolls on the web. “He has completely changed his mind,” says “The Prom” song and book writer Chad Beguelin. “He said, ‘Your show got to me.’ And […]

‘The Prom’ Broadway Musical is Getting a Netflix Movie Adaptation From Ryan Murphy

Ryan Murphy can’t get enough of those high school musicals. After starting a minor phenomenon with his fun but flawed Fox series Glee, Murphy is returning to those hallowed halls of high school to get ready for The Prom. The hit Broadway musical comedy directed and choreographed by Tony Award winning director Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon, Aladdin) is getting turned into a movie, with Murphy set to develop the project as part of his multi-year deal with Netflix. No one wants to go back t...

Exit Lines: Standouts

The Broadway phenomenon of the year…is on Netflix, where you (and, finally, I) can see Springsteen on Broadway. But if you care to leave the comfort of your screen at some for the (colder) comfort of Times Square this holiday season, there are other shows that are “boss” along the Great White Way. Chief among these is The Ferryman, a show that is outsized in every way, with live animals and a baby (an actual baby, not a prop) vying with a cast of nearly two dozen adult performers for our attenti...

Broadway Review: ‘The Prom’

It seems like a dubious musical mash-up: Broadway narcissists-turned-activists take over a middle-American town to help a lesbian teen who just wants to bring her date to the prom. But with a tuneful score, a playful book, and performances that remind you what Broadway heart and chutzpah are all about, this cause celebre of a […]

Disney’s ‘Aladdin’ soars, sputters in its Pantages premiere

Had there been one more wish left in Genie’s lamp, some of us in the opening-night audience of Disney’s “Aladdin” at the Pantages might have wished that all the lead performances had been as brilliant as the show’s technical elements are. The story, based on the 1992 film, is recounted through the book by Chad Beguelin; lyrics by Howard Ashman, Tim Rice and Beguelin; and music by Alan Menken. Aladdin the thief still wants to rise out of imprisoning poverty, Jasmine the princess wants to escape o...

Here’s how ‘Disney’s Aladdin’ is different from California Adventure’s long-running musical

Two years after “Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular” ended its 13-year run in the Hyperion Theater at Disney California Adventure, the curtain is rising on the Broadway tour at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre. And if you think you’ve already seen it, think again. Michael James Scott returns to the role of Genie in the Broadway national tour of Disney’s “Aladdin.” Scott originated the role in the Australian production, which earned him a Helpmann Award for Best Performance by A Featured ...

Aladdin review – Disney musical is a magic carpet ride to panto land

Prince Edward theatre, London Impressive stage magic, a gold-dripping design and a party-loving genie make this energetic adaptation of the animated movie a wicked treatImagine a Christmas panto minus the dame and with a budget of zillions and you get some idea of this musical extravaganza. At first, I resisted the corporate zeal that has taken the 1992 Disney animated feature and turned it into a live show, but I gradually found myself won over by the blend of spectacle, illusion and a greater ...
