Breaking down the Vikings' 2019 schedule: Toughest games, key matchups, best road trips

For whatever it's worth in April — before the draft, and well before the commencement of injuries that inevitably alter the course of a NFL season — the Vikings' 2019 schedule is the league's eighth-toughest, in terms of the winning percentages their opponents had a year ago. That's a function of the league's schedule rotation, which has the entire NFC North playing all four teams from the AFC West this season. The Vikings and Packers, as part of that rotation, each have road games against the C...

Chargers 2019 schedule includes four games in prime time

After a surprising six-game winning streak, the Chargers added two prime-time games to their 2018 schedule. All three were played in December, including the come-from-behind Sunday night win in Pittsburgh and the walk-off 2-point conversion on a Thursday night in Kansas City. With the Chargers delivering two of the most memorable games in 2018, the NFL apparently wanted more of them under the lights. The team will also sport a gold-colored facemask. “The sweeeeeeetest uniform in the NFL,” wide receiver Keenan Allen told the Chargers’ website. “Those powder blues, they special. That...

Report: WR Travis Benjamin, Chargers agree to 1-year extension

Travis Benjamin’s roster spot is reportedly safe for 2019. The speedy wideout and the Chargers agreed to a one-year extension that runs through the 2020 season, ESPN’s Field Yates reported Tuesday. The new deal will benefit both sides, according to Yates. Benjamin will get a $3 million signing bonus, but his base salary for 2019 drops from $5.25 million to $1 million, which will create $2.75 million in cap space for the Chargers. By making this accommodation, Benjamin’s 2019 roster spot is secur...

Rams free agency review: More departures than arrivals this time around

Compared to their last few offseasons, in which the Rams completely revamped their franchise from top to bottom, Les Snead understands this offseason might seem a bit anti-climactic. There were no blockbuster trades or big free-agent swings. By the Rams’ recent standards, the last few months have been especially quiet. “But I like to say that’s a good thing,” the Rams general manager assured reporters last month, “because all those things have kind of put us in a situation where we’ve got this f...

Chargers free-agency review: Tracking arrivals and departures

A month removed since the start of NFL free agency, Chargers coach Anthony Lynn doesn’t believe his team improved from the one that won 12 games and advanced to the divisional round of the playoffs. “I don’t think you can say right now this team is better than at the end of the last season,” Lynn said last month at the annual NFL meetings. “The 2018 season is entirely different than the upcoming year.” As Lynn pointed out, every season is different. Players improve, players decline. Injuries and...

AAF goes under: Inside the sudden collapse of the Alliance of American Football

SAN DIEGO — Three weeks before the Alliance of American Football suspended operations against his wishes, confounding league officials and leaving stunned employees and players stranded and reeling, Charlie Ebersol stood on the sideline at SDCCU Stadium in a blue AAF windbreaker, reveling in the roar of the crowd. It had been Ebersol’s vision to start a spring football league, one that might complement the NFL instead of compete with it, and in a matter of a year, he’d built one, complete with e...

NFL appointed Carmen Policy to arbitrate Broncos ownership dispute

The NFL has appointed an experienced voice to help settle a messy family dispute. Commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday night that former 49ers and Browns team president Carmen Policy had been named arbitrator for the league. Policy last surfaced in league matters when he was working on the (ultimately failed) Carson stadium project for the Raiders and Chargers, which failed to gain traction as the Rams' option for an Inglewood stadium emerged.
