Noomi Rapace Breathes Life Into Black List Thriller ‘O2,’ Franck Khalfoun Set to Direct

Noomi Rapace has been wildly underserved by Hollywood, despite consistently turning out fantastic performances since her breakout role in the 2009 Swedish-language The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. After a stint in blockbuster supporting roles as the go-to global presence, Rapace has found a niche in solid, but also underseen, thrillers. Hopefully her next role in the Black List thriller O2, which is directed by Amityville: Awakening director Franck Khalfoun and produced by Crawl director Alexan...

Which Forms of Courage Do You See In Yourself?

Editor’s note: This is a guest post by Nancy Seibel , M.Ed., NCC, BCC. From the series’ earliest films to the latest and last, the Star Wars movies’ portrayals of courage have awed me every time. “Could I ever do something like that?” I wondered as I watched The Rise of Skywalker’s outnumbered Rebel Alliance fight their epic battle with the evil First Order. I’ve never thought of courage as one of my character strengths, because I tend to equate it with the acts of physical bravery and self-sa...

This $15 Gradual Mask Is Honestly the Only Self-Tanner I'll Use on My Face

Growing up in the 2000s in New Jersey, doing everything in your power to look tan all-season-long was simply how things were done. And as you can imagine as a fair-skinned girl with pinkish undertones, getting that perfect glow - rather than looking completely orange - was near impossible for me to achieve. Case in point? My sophomore prom when I used so much self-tanner my head resembled a tangerine. Not a good look. Since I was in high school, there's been a change in the beauty world: people...

Blue Jackets More Close-Knit Than Ever

It was a very historic night for the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night for multiple reasons. Elvis Merzlikins did it again. He pitched his fifth shutout in his last eight games to help the Blue Jackets to their 19th win in their last 26 games. He only had to make 16 saves in the 2-0 win, but he became the first rookie goaltender in over 80 years to record five shutouts in an eight-game span. You have to go back to the great Frank Brimsek in 1938-39 for the last occurrence of this. In all,...

Mandy, Joe and Brian

In The Wall Street Journal this week, I interviewed Mandy Patinkin for my "House Call" column in the Mansion section (go here). Mandy talked about growing up in Chicago, the reason he hated school and why he lowers his voice when playing Saul Berenson on Showtime's Homeland series, which returns for its final season on  Sunday (February 9). [Photo above of Mandy Patinkin on the New York set of Homeland by Mark Seliger/courtesy of Showtime] Here's Mandy as Saul, with Clare Danes in season 2...

CS Soapbox: How the Best Actor Race Should Look

CS Soapbox: How the Best Actor Race Should Look The 92nd Academy Awards are this Sunday and it seems the Best Actor race is… quite boring. What was once considered an unpredictable Oscar bout between the likes of Adam Driver, Robert DeNiro, Adam Sandler, and Golden Globe-winner Taron Egerton has turned into an easier-than-expected victory lap for Joaquin Phoenix. The Joker star has swept the awards circuit, including the Screen Actors Guild, Critics Choice, and Golden Globes. And the film ha...

Can Americans travel to Cuba? I did in 2020. Here’s what happened.

I’m nervous in the waiting line at Cuban immigration, but I know I shouldn’t be. I did everything right. Still, this is Cuba. I’m visiting Cuba as an American. Can Americans travel to Cuba? Yeah, we can. This country has been off-limits to us since 1959 — though that hasn’t stopped lots of Americans from visiting Cuba both legally and quasi-legally. The agent calls me forward. I hand him my navy blue passport and half-smile, half-cringe. Yes, I’m here, and I’m American, and I’m sorry our ...

Puerto Ricans Protest in Anger Over Unused Emergency Aid

(SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico) — Hundreds of people joined a protest Thursday organized by Puerto Rican singer René Pérez of Calle 13 fame in a demonstration reminiscent of those that ousted the island’s former governor last year. Anger is growing over emergency aid that until recently sat unused in a warehouse amid ongoing earthquakes. Protesters gathered under the heavy rain at the governor’s mansion as they waved flags and banged on pots, demanding the ouster of Gov. Wanda Vázquez. “This is not...

Whicker: Even with the lost years, Tiger Woods finds time is on his side

SAN DIEGO — At Torrey Pines, you can see ships pass in the daytime. Six years ago, Jordan Spieth appeared to put Tiger Woods in his wake during the first two rounds of the Farmers Insurance Open. Spieth shot 63 on Friday. Woods shot 72. Woods was 38 and hurting. Spieth was 20 and charging. Woods said he envied Spieth for just walking up to his putts and knocking them in, unburdened by memory. You could hear a page turning. Two months later Spieth finished second to Bubba Watson at the Masters. T...
