Essential Movies About High School You Need To See

The high school experience is a fixture of coming-of-age films, as heightened emotional states and specific pressures give the transition from childhood to adulthood unlimited storytelling potential. Great high school movies cross many different genres, but always come down to the specific, yet somehow universal, challenges that teenagers face.John Hughes is the filmmaker most closely associated with high school movies thanks to his groundbreaking work in the '80s to accurately depict these pivo...

Actors Who Died In 2021

Every year seems worse than the last when it comes to the number of bright lives that we've lost. In the end, death makes us all equals. But the work actors do, telling stories that inspire us, helps them to live on in our memories longer than most. We may not know these people personally, they become a part of us. We let them into our living rooms, and let them tell us about the parts of our world -- or, sometimes, a make-believe one ---that we may not get to see for ourselves. The entertainment...

The 15 Best '80s Comedies Ranked

The '80s: a decade of contrasts. With an ongoing conversation about adult content in films eventually culminating in the introduction of the PG-13 rating in 1984, filmmakers faced the challenge of trying to aim for narrower demographics than ever before. They grappled with creating films that bridged the gap between family-friendly movies and raunchy sex comedies, the practical result of which was that there was more variety in comedies than ever before. Yes, the '80s had its fair share of gross...

10 Things I Love Sunday

Hiii!!! Hope your weekend has been absolutely amazing. We have been taking it easy the past few weeks (on the weekends) and it’s been so nice. Here’s the inflatable pool we’ve been hanging out in on the weekends— it’s definitely big enough for two adults and you could probably fit 3-4 fully grown people. Do you enjoy weighted blankets? Or maybe you’ve been intrigued by them but haven’t tried one yet? Let me put you onto weighted eye pillows, which is like a tiny weighted blanket for your eyes. ...

Very neat

This is the front yard of a house in Mennetou-sur-Cher (I think). Everything is impeccable. Not a weed to be seen in the gravel. A nice neat row of blue campanules (bellflower). Our house has gravel paths around it and it's a constant battle against weeds. I wonder how they do it? Better living through chemistry, likely. Simple elegance. Someone spends a lot of time on this. I'm surprised our heat hasn't come on this morning. It's about 13ºC (about 55ºF) out there. But don't worry! It's predic...

Mennetou-sur-Cher

What makes me think that I took the last two photos in the small town of Mennetou-sur-Cher is that among them is this one, which is definitely of Mennetou. The old center still has part of its medieval wall, including a couple of portals like the one in this picture. And there's a plaque on one of them that says, more or less, Joan of Arc slept here. She set the example for George Washington to follow centuries later. One of the portals in Mennetou-sur-Cher, May 2006. You might be surprised, b...

Nicolas Cage is Better Than Your Nicolas Cage Memes

Nicolas Cage is a force of nature. He’s one of the best actors of his generation, a man who takes on roles no other actor of his stature would dare touch. He gives 150% in every role, whether he’s a publishing exec that thinks he’s turning into a vampire (Vampire’s Kiss) or a big game hunter trapped on a boat with loads of angry animals (Primal). Cage has the rare ability to just go for it, whether that means explosive action or something more somber. He’s a one-in-a-million actor who works tir...
