WCHA Vacates Shootout Result After Error

Nope. Last Saturday, Bemidji State and St. Cloud State battled to a 2-2 draw in St. Cloud in a women’s WCHA league game. The game moved to a shootout, as prescribed by the league rule book. Bemidji State’s second shooter, Mya Neugent, scored this beautiful backhand toe drag goal: Bemidji State's Mya Neugent with a beauty backhand toe drag for the shootout winner. pic.twitter.com/RTu8pQobUR— Chris Dilks (@ChrisDilks) January 17, 2021 After the goal, Bemidji State was...

Hockey East Moves to Week-to-Week Schedule

In a fitting sign of just how well things are going, Hockey East, after weeks of multiple cancellations, postponements, and schedule adjustments, finally said screw it and announced they were throwing out their initial composite league schedule on both the men’s and women’s side, and would instead be scheduling games on a week-to-week basis for the remainder of the regular season. The goal at this point, is to try and get as many games in as possible, rather than worrying about any se...

Eye on the Future: Ronnie Attard

Photo by Andy Lewis/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Defenseman Ronnie Attard took one of the unique routes to being selected in the 2019 NHL Draft. A 1999-birthdate, Attard was passed over in his two years of draft eligibility, and in fact, wasn’t even really on the NHL’s radar in either of those first two years. In 98 games over those two seasons, he posted a quiet 11 goals and 20 points. But his third and final year of draft eligiblity was an incredible breakout season. H...

Wisconsin Adds Lacey Eden to Roster

One day after #4 Northeastern added a major piece to their roster with the addition of transfer Maureen Murphy, #2 Wisconsin bolstered their line-up in similar fashion when they announced that freshman Lacey Eden would be joining the team: Help us welcome @lacey_eden to the #Badgers! - https://t.co/kJ4vxmZWtK pic.twitter.com/653LOu7e5Y— Wisconsin Hockey (@BadgerWHockey) January 14, 2021 Eden originally committed to play college hockey at Princeton, but with the Ivy League can...

Maureen Murphy Granted Eligibility at Northeastern

Providence college transfer Maureen Murphy has been granted immediate eligibility to being playing at Northeastern this season, the school announced in a press release. Murphy transferred to Northeastern this summer after three seasons at Providence, but had not been granted eligibility yet. Though NCAA women’s hockey allows players to transfer without sitting out a year, Hockey East league rules require players to sit out for a year if they transfer to another school within the confe...

NHL Prospect Watch—January 2021

Photo by Codie McLachlan/Getty Images With the World Juniors completed, and college hockey trudging along as best it can through postponements and cancellations, it’s a good time to take a look at some noteworthy NHL prospects around the college hockey world... One of the big risers for Team USA at the World Juniors was the team’s lone 2021 first-time eligible Matty Beniers(2021). Beniers drew big-time praise for his attention to details and ability to do all the little thing...

Potential 2022 US World Junior Team: In Case We Still Have A Country

Photo by Codie McLachlan/Getty Images It’s been a busy week, to say the least, for Americans on the international hockey front. On Tuesday evening, the country claimed its’ fifth ever gold medal at the World Juniors with a thrilling, dominating 2-0 victory over Canada. About 12 hours later, a group of insurrectionists broke into the United States Capitol in a coup attempt that ended a 200+-year streak of peaceful transition of power. So a bit of a mixed bag all the way around...

Trevor Zegras Defers to No One

King | Photo by Codie McLachlan/Getty Images The lead-up to Tuesday’s World Juniors gold medal game felt like preparations for a coronation. The World Juniors, after all, is supposed to be Canada’s tournament. The Canadians had walked through this year’s event virtually untouched. The only real question left was where this team would rank in the pantheon of past great Canadian champions. NHL Network, for some reason, did a live interview with Trevor Zegras on his way into the...

Minnesota State Cruises Past Northern Michigan with Big First Period

It was a rocky unofficial first portion of the season for Minnesota State. The Mavericks only managed to squeeze in five games between Covid cancellations and dropped a game to Michigan Tech and tied one with Bemidji State. But the WCHA preseason favorites looked ready to go in their league opener on Saturday as they scored four times in the first 14 minutes of the game to cruise to a 5-0 victory at Northern Michigan. Here was the final scoring: First Period 5:16 Jared Spooner from Bre...

Breaking Down Carter Savoie’s Seven Pod Goals

Photo by Lizzy Barrett/Getty Images One of the surprise standouts in the NCHC’s three-week Pod to open their season was Denver freshman forward Carter Savoie. Savoie was a fourth round draft choice, 100th overall, by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2020 NHL Draft, and had a reputation as a goal-scorer after scoring over 50 goals with Sherwood Park of the AJHL last season. But few could have expected Savoie to perform as well as he did in the Pod. In 10 games, Savoie scored seven g...

Fixing the First Week of the World Juniors

Stop this nonsense | Photo by Codie McLachlan/Getty Images It’s fair to say the World Juniors has, to this point, sucked. We know it will get better. The second week remains arguably the most exciting week in hockey. But increasingly, the first week of this tournament has become a slog to get to the good stuff. Boxing Day was a complete abomination with Canada destroying Germany 16-2, followed by the US beating Austria 11-0. Both games featured the winning squad scoring more ...

Eye on the Future: Wyatt Kaiser

In a year with an exceptionally strong freshman class, especially when it comes to high-end defensemen, one of the early standouts has been Minnesota Duluth rookie defenseman Wyatt Kaiser. Kaiser was selected in the third round of the 2020 NHL Draft, 81st overall by the Chicago Blackhawks, so he was certainly considered a talented and promising young prospect. But the extent to which he has excelled so far this season, and so soon after being drafted, is exceeding all expectations. I ...

All-NCHC Pod Team

The NCHC completed their Pod today playing an incredible 38 games over three weeks at Baxter Arena in Omaha, Nebraska. It was an ambitious plan when the NCHC first announced the Pod, but they managed to pull it off. Two games out of the original 40 scheduled were lost when Colorado College had to shut down prior to the Pod, but once they were able to get all eight teams in Omaha, things went as well as could possibly be expected. It was refreshing, not just to have hockey back, but to...

Beavers, Mavericks Open Weekend Series with a Draw

Minnesota State and Bemidji State traded goals for two periods before a scoreless third period and overtime to end their Thursday afternoon matinee WCHA league match-up in Mankato in a 2-2 draw. Bemidji State took a 2-1 lead late in the second period off a goalie from Ellie Moser, but Minnesota State’s Jamie Nelson was able to answer back just 1:58 later to knot the game at 2-2. The Mavericks could not convert on a late third period power play, and just missed an overtime game-winnin...

Team USA Announces 2021 World Juniors Team

The IIHF cancelled the women’s U18 tournament, as well as the the lower division U20 tournaments for the men. But because there is a dollar to be made, they are still plowing ahead with the World Juniors, against common sense, for a tournament that has already been marred by multiple players and coaches from multiple teams being ruled out of the tournament due to Covid-19 protocol. With that said, USA Hockey announced the 25 players that have made it through initial testing and will en...

The University of Alaska Fairbanks announced on Friday that their men’s hockey and men’s and women’s basketball would be withdrawing from the 2020-2021 season in their respective conferences. The school cited concerns about the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic as the reason for the decision. Eye on the Future: Antti Tuomisto

Photo by Bill Wippert/NHLI via Getty Images In the 2018 NHL Draft, the Detroit Red Wings infamously passed on defenseman Quinn Hughes in favor of drafting forward Filip Zadina, a move history continues to judge harsher by the day. Michigan Tech Slows Down Minnesota State For a 3-1 Win

Sophomore goalie Blake Pietila was outstanding for Michigan Tech stopping 43 of 44 shots, including 16 of 17 in a third period where the Huskies could barely leave their own zone to lead Michigan Tech to a 3-1 victory over Minnesota State on Sunday evening in the first of a two game series. St. Cloud State moved to 2-0-0 in the NCHC’s Omaha Pod, keeping pace with rival Minnesota Duluth for the only unblemished record so far, with a 4-3 victory over Denver on Saturday night. Nolan Walker’s backhand goal on a pretty pass from Easton Brodzinski in the third period stood up as the game-winning goal for the Huskies. Here is the final scoring for the game. North Dakota Tops Denver 4-3 in Overtime Thriller

The rivalry between North Dakota and Denver has produced some fantastic games in recent years, and their first meeting in the NCHC’s Omaha Pod, despite not having any fans in the building, proved to be no exception. Neither team could hold a lead in the third period, but North Dakota ultimately prevailed with a 4-3 victory in the 3-on-3 overtime on a goal by Jordan Kawaguchi. Series Recap: Minnesota State Splits at St. Cloud State

It’s grim reality that even two weeks into the season, a series between Minnesota State and St. Cloud State is likely to be a key match-up in the battle for Not Last in the WCHA. Both programs have upgraded their talent level significantly in recent years, thanks in large part to a talent pool that continues to grow deeper by the year. But they’re going up against, outside a US-Canada international match-up, literally the most talented women’s hockey teams in the world in the upper par...

Game Recap: Air Force at American International, 11/27/20

After being named preseason favorites in Atlantic Hockey, American International got their season off to a solid start with a 3-1 victory Air Force at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. It was Air Force that got off to a strong start, scoring on their first shot on goal of the season. Will Gavin took a pass behind the net before skating to the side of the goal and beating AIC goalie Stefano Durante under the pad with a low-angle shot. But from that point forward, Amer...

Third Period Rally Leads Minnesota to 4-2 Win Over Minnesota Duluth

Photo by M. And through 50 minutes of Friday night’s game against Minnesota Duluth, their young stars were equally quiet. But they came through in a big way late with freshmen Abbey Murphy and Anne Cherkowski each scorin...

Checking In on the Big Ten

Two-and-a-half weeks into the season, the Big Ten has emerged as one of the victors in this strange season. Whether it has been the league’s rigorous testing protocol or just dumb luck, the league has now managed to play 12 games without a cancellation; a remarkable achievement given the cancellation rate for the rest of college hockey is hovering above 50% at the moment and those Big Ten games have been played in states where case numbers have surpassed the CDC’s previous worst possib...
