Very like a whale.

Nice. Irrelevantly, that got me thinking of the cloud-gazing in "Hamlet": Hamlet: Do you see yonder cloud that’s almost in shape of a camel? Polonius: By the mass, and ‘tis like a camel, indeed. Hamlet: Methinks it is like a weasel. Polonius: It is backed like a weasel. Hamlet: Or like a whale? Polonius: Very like a whale.Yonder dialogue is almost in the shape of an activist talking to a wokester.... Paris Photos

A mix of photos around Paris taken within a few days of each other. We had a misty rain and then this rainbow when the sun came out. It was enormous. And look at this unusual cloud formation on the left. It looks like something came down and smashed in flat on top and I guess a wind of some sort did. I saw it from my apartment window.(I read up on this type of cloud, called an anvil cloud, and it is cause by wind in the cloud hitting ice crystals at the top.) A really gorgeous...

This morning at 5:12 and 5:28.

What happened after 5:28 was interesting too, but I'll save that for later. Oh, the suspense! You can imagine, given the structure of the clouds at the point where the sun will emerged. I wanted to put the first 2 photos up early because I'm going through my email, and I see this question from Portly Pirate: "Have you ever mentioned which season is your favorite for sunrises? Do you even have a favorite?"If I clicked my "sunrise" tag and scrolled and scrolled, I might be able to form an opi...

Wildfires and record temperatures in Canada are generating 'fire-breathing' pyrocumulonimbus thunderstorms

A pyrocumulonimbus cloud above eastern Washington, as seen from 30,000 feet up in August 2019. NASA Earth Observatory Wildfires in western Canada are producing pyrocumulonimbus storm clouds. Dubbed the "fire-breathing dragon of clouds," these clouds can generate tornadoes and lightning that may cause more fires. See more stories on Insider's business page. Record heat and growing wildfires are creating firestorms that can generate their own lightning in the skies above British Columbia...

NASA's Curiosity rover captured rare photos of pearly, iridescent clouds on Mars

NASA's Curiosity Mars rover captured clouds just after sunset on March 19, 2021. The image is color corrected so that the scene appears as it would to the human eye. NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS NASA's Curiosity rover photographed iridescent clouds drifting through the Martian skies. These rare clouds seem to be made of frozen carbon dioxide - dry ice - rather than water. Some "mother of pearl" clouds made a colorful, shimmering display at sunset. See more stories on Insider's busines...

Thanks for not breaking our heart.

I set out in the snow to do my sunrise run, and I made it to my vantage point, which looked like this:   No sun to see. 100% overcast. And the snow wasn't stuck to the trees, so no "winter wonderland" effect. Just deep snow on the ground, making the run something of a trudge. But as I approached my vantage point, down along the shore, I saw a man and woman up ahead, and they'd slowed down and were slowing stamping about.  I had to overtake them, and my normal method is to get as far ...

‘Clouds’ Review: The Stirring True Story of Zach Sobiech Becomes an Effective Disney Plus Weepie

You have to hand it to “Clouds,” the latest wholesome YA drama to premiere on the Disney Plus platform: There has never been, and probably never will be, another teen movie to pay such repeated tribute to Mary Oliver. A line from the late American poet’s “The Summer Day” — “Tell me, what is it […]

‘Clouds’ Review: A Perfectly Respectful and Perfectly Acceptable Weepie Drama

The new film Clouds is perfectly harmless, which feels almost required to mention up-front. The true story on which the film is based, derived from an online phenomenon, feels like it belongs to a different era of the Internet, when people could spend a day or two on social media focusing on nothing more than a feel-good story. And those involved in the making of the film have uniquely close ties to the subject of the story, a teenage boy stricken with cancer who turned his terminal illness ...

‘Clouds’ Moves From a Warner Bros. Theatrical Release to Streaming on Disney+

In a surprising move, Clouds, a film that was originally supposed to be released theatrically by Warner Bros., will now go straight to Disney+. Moving a film from theaters to streaming isn’t the surprising part – we’re seeing a lot of that these days. But it’s curious that Warners would sell this off to another streaming service when they have their own streaming service – HBO Max – ready to launch this month. Disney+ just scored the rights to Clouds, a film that was originally set up at War...

Mount Washington wave cloud

Mountains are known for creating some unusual weather systems, but on Monday the observatory atop Mount Washington in New Hampshire shared a photo of some clouds that are pretty out of this world. The photo shows two cloud features hovering side-by-side: a smooth, round, lenticular cloud that transitions into a curling wave. While lenticular clouds are common around mountains, they don’t typically swoop into the shape of a wave. The observatory shared a picture of the cloud on Twitter, with ...
