Coming Home - Thursday

Thursday was the day that had seemed so far away a week ago and the day that we dreaded.  Yep, it was the day we had to say goodbye to the South island and head home to mentally prepare for the return to work. I met Colin in Richmond and after a nice ride over the Whangamoa and Rai Saddles we had a quick stop in Havelock. Preparing for work... Next up was a trip through Queen Charlotte [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Coming Home - Wednesday

On Wednesday we stayed based in the Nelson/Tasman area with plans to do some exploring over the hill in Golden Bay. Around nineish I road across to Motueka to meet up with Colin and another mate of his, Mitch.  Mitch is (actually was now) a DR (Wee-strom now) rider who has been around a few more summers than both Colin and I and knows how to punt a knobbly shod DR... Our first little squirt was [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Coming Home - Tuesday

After our rest day (only around 385km) we had slightly bigger plans for Tuesday.  We had to be in Richmond/Motueka by the end of the day but we couldn't just ride straight there now, could we? Colin was dead keen to ride out to Karamea and then walk the Heaphy Track so that's how we kicked off the morning... The lady at the motel was good enough to allow us to leave our panniers at the motel so [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Coming home - Monday

After our big weekend of riding a decent sleep (in a cold motel) followed by a later start was in order.  We got away from the motel at around 10am and took a short ride up to Kaipoi to checkout Motomox and get Colin some flash new trou. We spent a fair bit of time there chatting to the owner, looking at all sorts of farkles and riding gear and checking out some of his photos.  The mapping [Author: Andrew Thomson]

‘What We Do In The Shadows’ Review: New Country, New House, Same Mockumentary Vampire Laughs [SXSW]

Entire television series shouldn’t be critiqued on pilots alone, but that’s all What We Do In The Shadows had to offer eager South By Southwest victims (aside from Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s uproarious improv introduction). Episodics often require a few inaugural chapters before hitting momentum strides, and pilots bare the weight of hypnotizing audiences while establishing tonality to come. In this bubble, FX’s new take on What We Do In The Shadows transplants the same approach, expre...

Takapari Road

While we were away down South, Colin and I had plenty of time to hatch plans for future rides.  I was dead keen to get my first WR adventure done before going back to work so by hook or by crook I was going to be going somewhere this weekend... Colin hadn't managed to get in enough riding while we were away so he decided that he was a starter for some WR action too.  Unfortunately, his little WR [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Meet Mighty Mouse

Ok, so before I disappeared off to take part in the TT2000 I did something foolish and bought another bike.  Except it wasn't foolish - I needed another bike for my single car garage (now containing 3 bikes and a car). Enter the little WR who now shall be dubbed "Might Mouse": After chatting to Colin about his one I had a quick look on Trademe and stumbled on this one.  It looked like it was [Author: Andrew Thomson]

Bright Sheng: My Father’s Letter and Bernstein’s Question

Video Presentations and Photography by Molly Sheridan Transcription by Julia Lu We’ve been wanting to talk with Bright Sheng for years, but given his teaching schedule at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and his commitments to participate in performances of his music either as a pianist or a conductor all over the world, he has been difficult to pin down. But when we finally met with him on Presidents’ Day in his pied-à-terre across the street from Lincoln Center, it proved to be worth th...

Blog Tour Review + Giveaway | Lady Derring Takes a Lover by Julie Anne Long

I'm delighted to be a part of the blog tour for this first novel in Julie Anne Long's new historical series―The Palace of Rogues. I found my way to Ms. Long's writing in a bit of a piecemeal fashion. Her long-running series is widely beloved and records the various and sundry escapades of the always-scheming, never repentant Eversea and Redmond families. Really, the series is worth the price of admission for the hilarious (and ever-evolving) "Ballad of Colin Eversea" alone (though Colin's is ...

SNOW PATROL. Number 8 Wire’s Cool Honda CL350 Desert Sled

Written by Andrew Jones My kids recently took much pleasure in tripping me up with some trivia they had learnt in school. “What’s the largest desert in the world?” they quizzed, with a smug look on their faces. “The Sahara,” I proclaimed, confidently. “Wrong. It’s Antarctica!” they squealed. Of course, the little shits were right. Most people think that deserts are hot and dry, but really it’s just a lack of precipitation that defines them. So when I saw this snow-bound ‘Desert Sled’ from Mon...

How Amazon's 'Homecoming: S1' Reveals Toxic White Womanhood

None The Amazon series Homecoming: Season 1 has so far received positive reviews that focus on the show's exploration of corporate power and government bureaucracy, a "chilling portrait of corporate American greed" as Matthew Jacobs writes in Huffington Post. However, what's not getting the attention it needs is how the more obvious systems of corrupt corporate, military, and government power are fueled in the show by the less obvious system of white supremacy. While Homecoming is not explicit...
