Pomona edges into Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ novel

Quentin Tarantino’s movies tend to go on longer than is strictly necessary. The same holds true for his bestselling novelization of his own screenplay for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which runs 400 pages. But the extra space does allow for digressions that weren’t part of his digression-filled 2-hour, 41-minute movie (which I liked, let me hasten to say). And in one scenic byway, brought to my attention by reader Allen Callaci, a Texas cowboy picks up a young hitchhiker and starts a convers...

Emmy Producers on Seth Rogen Going Rogue, Scott Frank’s Lengthy Speech, Conan’s Heckles and What You Didn’t See

Emmy telecast producers Ian Stewart and Reginald Hudlin are still fuming over Seth Rogen’s unplanned comedy routine at the start of Sunday’s ceremony, in which he roasted the show for a perceived lack of COVID protocols behind the scenes. The routine was delivered a bit tongue-in-cheek, but with enough credulity to cause a stir on […]

Conan O'Brien Was The Funniest Part Of The 2021 Emmys

Last night, the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards were pretty disappointing. With the exception of a fantastic opening number and one good sketch, the show just wasn't all that entertaining, despite being hosted by Cedric the Entertainer. However, there was some impromptu comedy to be found in the form of one of late night's comedy staples goofing around on live television.Conan O'Brien was at the Emmys last night, and after he lost the award he was nominated for, he decided to have a little fun. And w...

Norm Macdonald made you laugh by doing almost nothing | David Baddiel

The standup, most famous for Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live, could make the familiar feel strange and newNorm Macdonald, former SNL cast member, dies at 61It was Frank Skinner who first brought my attention to Norm Macdonald. Years ago – I can’t remember how, as this was before YouTube – he showed me a clip of a matinee idol-looking man at the Montreal comedy festival, doing a bit about lying. But a very specific element of lying. “You ever lie for no reason at all?” he says, in his impos...

The 5 Greatest Norm Macdonald Moments

Norm Macdonald has passed away. The beloved and undeniably distinctive comedian was 61 years old and recently lost his quiet battle to cancer. The fact that the man, known for his dry sense of humor and fearless approach to comedy, opted not to disclose his battle with cancer is very much in character. Macdonald once said this of battles with cancer:A draw for him, a loss for the rest of us here on Earth. There are few people I have ever found to be funnier than Macdonald. That dry delivery. The...

‘The Suicide Squad’ Actor Flula Borg on Playing a Supervillain Sex God for James Gunn [Interview]

Flula Borg walks into The Suicide Squad with swagger. With his blonde locks, the twirl of the javelin, and an air of pure confidence, Borg makes quite the entrance as a supervillain. Javelin is a comic book character, as Borg points out, we should know absolutely nothing about. There’s not much to know about him, except he was an Olympic athlete and died a few times in the pages of DC superhero stories. The comedian makes the most of his screen time in James Gunn‘s film. It’s a surprisingly piv...

How to Get an Internship: 5 Tips for Standing Out

Years ago, our founder Ramit Sethi beat out several Stanford MBA students for an incredible internship at Sun Microsystems. Oh, and he was just a sophomore in college at the time. That’s right. A skinny teenage college student beat out the cream-of-the-crop students getting their Master’s Degree in business.  “How did he swing that?” you might ask.  Great question! Getting an internship isn’t quite as hard as you might think and getting your dream internship is far more achievable...

Bear McCreary Was Born to Score Masters of the Universe: Revelation

Kevin Smith’s sequel to the classic He-Man and the Masters of the Universe ‘80s cartoon is an excellent (and frequently shocking) show, and Bear McCreary is part of the reason why. He-Man Episodes to Watch Before Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe may have been created to sell a toyline, but there is no doubting that even by itself, the show was a cultural colossus that lived up to the image of its musclebound star. The cartoon crafted many of the elements that fans associate with the character and lore behind the franchise, as it explored a fantasy world full of magic, technology, and other sci-fi elements; a land where anything felt like it could fit into the wonderful menagerie called Eternia. Favorite Films of 1978

After almost two years, we finally come to that hallowed tradition of a top 10 list for my favorite films of 1978. For the uninitiated, the 1978 Project is a deep dive into the cinema of the year of my birth. This sort of annual appraisal is normally reserved for current releases, but I’ve found the process of exploring the past quite enjoyable as well. I’ve been doing the current release thing for a while now though, so if you’d like to take a spin through the last fifteen years, feel free: [20...
