Guest Post: Gina Baynham

I first came upon Corey‘s blog in 2007 accidentally as I sat in my kitchen in Australia helping my 7-year-old daughter to research a school project. The link Google brought me to was a story about gold bead necklaces  traditionally gifted to young girls in Marseille to mark special occasions as they grew up. I was captivated. For a brief moment I was unaware of my messy kitchen, the pile of laundry waiting to be done,  and young kids running around asking me to do things for them. I came b...

Aix with the Red Shed Vintage Tour

The sun called out to enjoy the day. Perfect as today I am helping Red Shed Vintage Tours lead 10 women around Provence. Today started in Aix.           Any meal in France, don't be intimidated by the linen tablecloths and napkins... that is just how it is in France. Eating is dining even at McDonald's. Rarely, do you see anyone walking around eating or carrying a cup, and when you do it most likely is a tourist, or Corey Amaro eating a pain au chocolat at the brocante. In France, you do not...

Mini Tarte Tatins

Tarte Tatin is one of my favorite French desserts, it is a classic down to earth recipe when it comes to the array of French desserts, it is not the Marie Antoinette of pastries, instead, it is a French Country type that I can imagine having at a long farm table by an open fire. The other day I had every intention to make a Tarte Tatin, but time was not on my side and guests where around the corner. So I had to improvise that is what I do since I usually have too many grand ideas and little t...

Yann's Return

Yann came home from India. I can see in his eyes that he has had a wonderful adventure, snippets of stories unfolded one moment to another as he unpacked his bag and settles back to daily life. He brought a few gifts, scarves, perfume, Safran and fewer photos that have yet to be seen. As soon as I have some of his photos I will post them. Overall Yann said the trip was amazing, that traveling opens your eyes to see people and places in a new light, he hopes to go again in a few years when they o...

The French Market What I Saw

Black is my go-to color. Safe. Always good. So imagine my surprise when at the Aix en Provence market these bright colorful splashy outfits caught my eye taking me back to a younger self. I wanted all of them. But my practical side kicked in: how many coats does one need?  If ever you are in Provence the best markets (not brocantes) are in Aix en Provence (T, TH, SA.), St Remy (W), Apt (SA), Lourmarin (F) Isle sur la Sorgue (S) St Maximum (W)...              A colorful play of plaids, ...

A Place I Call Home: Saint Zacharie

A longtime blog reader, and "feel like I know you friend" Peggy came to our part of the world for a month long visit with her husband Bob. They settled into our town on the boarder of two great regions, and dove deep into the slow lifestyle travel. Everyday they went to an off the beaten trail to a local market, where English was not heard and because of that the reality that this is France, and not catering to the tourist but to the locals who live here. They gathered their daily meal, plus ...
