Met Gala 2021: stars explore ‘American independence’ theme – in pictures

Co-chair Billie Eilish (the youngest in the event’s history) was one of many stars to channel Grace Kelly at the pandemic-delayed Met Gala on Monday night. She was joined by a guest list of fashion designers, models, celebrities and – to some controversy – TikTok stars, on the steps at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year’s theme of the Costume Institute fundraiser was ‘American independence’, leaving plenty of room for interpretation. Just ask Lil Nas X, who did a Lady Gaga-esque three-loo...

The Table as a Space Where All Are Welcome: Ajiri Aki on Design

We look to Ajiri Aki as much for romantic table settings as we do a kind of design wisdom. Through her one-woman vintage tableware shop and rental company, Madame de la Maison, there are subtle lessons to be learned: Objects have histories and meaning. Invest in what lasts (and rent one-time-use goods). Always, always use the good china. Born in Nigeria and raised in Austin, Texas, Ajiri earned her Masters in Decorative Arts, Design History, and Material Culture at The Bard Graduate Center and w...

Parisian of the Month: Cori Coppola

I am excited to have my new friend, Cori Coppola as my Parisian of the Month.   Where were you born and where did you grow up? I was born in Hollywood in a little bungalow apartment. It wasn’t a great neighborhood, but it was one of those leftover bungalow areas that had originally been built for the larger studios. It was a two-bedroom with one bathroom, and I could go outside and play under the huge palm trees. Then we moved to Hancock Park which I loved, and I could bike or walk ...

Met Gala 2019’s ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ theme explained

If last year’s Catholic-inspired Met Gala was expected to be the most controversial, this year’s could be its most confused. Met Gala 2019: What does 'camp' really mean?

If you've ever felt the venerable Metropolitan Museum of Art takes itself a bit too seriously, you may want to pay attention to "Camp: Notes on Fashion," the Costume Institute's upcoming spring exhibition. According to the museum, the exhibition, inspired by Susan Sontag's 1964 essay "Notes on Camp," will examine "how the elements of irony, humor, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality, and exaggeration are expressed in fashion."

Why Is Kim Kardashian On The Cover Of Vogue’s Camp-Themed Issue?

Kim Kardashian West graces the cover of Vogue magazine's May 2019 issue. The cover lines suggest that the issue will incorporate the Met Gala, happening the first Monday in May. But you'd never guess that this year's theme is "camp" by looking at the cover image. Kardashian is dripping wet in a sheer shirt. It's not an unusual look for the reality star but it doesn't invoke the Met Gala's theme. View this post on Instagram ...

What Is The Met Gala’s Camp Theme Exactly?

Update:Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute, further explained the relevance of the 2019 Met Gala's theme to Vogue on Tuesday, calling out its cultural relevance.Camp, Bolton notes, “has become increasingly more mainstream in its pluralities—political camp, queer camp, Pop camp, the conflation of high and low, the idea that there is no such thing as originality.” He continues: “but I think you’ve got to be incredibly sophisticated to understand camp—look at Yv...

How A Medieval Costume Show Became 2018’s Most-Attended Exhibition Worldwide

The show appealed to such a wide audience “because it put fashion in the context of the Medieval sculpture hall, and juxtaposed art with architecture to create an experience that was like a pilgrimage”, says Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge of the Costume Institute, who organised the show. “It was very much an experiential moment for people, with the fashion and art mixing together in a procession-like way.” – The Art Newspaper

A Look At The Rodarte Exhibit At The National Museum Of Women In The Arts

Even if brick & mortar are on the decline, interest in fashion has not waned one bit. In fact, curiosity for clothes is at such a high that even if we can't buy it, we'll still show up to gawk. In recent years, the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art has seen its highest numbers —  ever — and they're not slowing down. It makes sense, then, that even smaller exhibits focused on certain designers, like the Rodarte exhibition at the National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washing...

Met Museum Says ‘Heavenly Bodies’ Is Now Most Visited Show In Its History

According to the museum’s final attendance figures, the Costume Institute show of couture inspired by Roman Catholic vestments was seen by 1,659,647 people. (What, did they count every person who walked past a pope dress in the Medieval Sculpture Hall or The Cloisters?) That number exceeds the 1,360,957 viewer figure for the 1978 “Treasures of Tutankhamun” show.
