Nikkei cuisine and where to find it

“Nikkei” just sounds like a word people are going to use wrong. You can almost hear a half dozen people sitting around a violet-lit table in some SoHo hotspot asking stuff like, “Is the octopus tonight Nikkei? Perhaps you could go back and ask the chef.” While the waiter looks on confused another chimes in, “Kylie ONLY eats Nikkei now. It’s like sushi, but lower-carb.” “And, like, all the fish has to be flown in from Peru,” says another. “And they mix it with six different kinds of pomegranat...

When God is the top priority for a person and family, all other relationships fall into place

Marriage is one of the most beautiful and difficult relationships we enter into . . . something fiction author Jolina Petersheim has experienced personally and also explores in her new novel— How the Light Gets In, a story about marriage and motherhood, loss and moving on. While writing the novel, Jolina and her husband Randy faced several trials that tested their marriage deeply: moving across country with three young daughters after homesteading in Wisconsin; building (by hand) a new home; th...

03082019 – CrossFit

19.3 was no joke on the gluteus! You know when no one in the announcement makes it through the workout that it is going to be hard! For some reason the official scaled workout still had handstand pushups in it. Otherwise I did the scaled version which was: 200ft lunges with 35# dumbbell overhead 50 box step ups with 35# dumbbell 50 hand release pushups 20 Wall walks (my gym’s modification for handstand walk – not many made it to this) In a 10 minute time cap I made it through t...

A Visit to Reebok's Headquarters in Boston

We recently had the exciting opportunity to tour Reebok's 220,000 square foot headquarters located at the Boston, Massachusetts Seaport. Designed by Gensler, the massive headquarters was created with the goal of combining Reebok's previously spread out teams and creating a more updated brand identity. The Reebok team gave us a behind the scenes look at their new facilities, including their design studio, CrossFit gym, and archive.A major point of emphasis on the tour was the lack of assigned des...

03012019 – CrossFit

Today was 19.2. This is essentially a repeat of 16.2 with some modifications in the time cap. I was struggling with which workout to do… Solcana has their own scaling structure for gym points and that is really what matters for me. I decided that I would do the Gold version which used Toes to Shoulders (or hands on a higher bar and getting toes to lower bar on the rig) as I knew Hanging Knee Raises would feel too easy. T2S was crazy hard! Here is what the workout looked like for my scaling...

02222019 – CrossFit

The CrossFit Open season has begun!! There have been loads of changes from HQ, but they still came up with a legit workout, that at first glance seems simple, but man does it hurt! 19.1 is a couplet of 19 Wall Balls and 19 Calorie Rowing for 15 minutes getting as many reps as possible (AMRAP). Easy peasy or something! The 15 minutes is a long time for these two intense movements. The Rx was a 20# wall ball at a 10′ high standard. I completed a total of 218 reps (each calorie is one re...

Planning a Perfect Romantic Ski Getaway

Romance is such a loaded word.  The stereotypical flowers and champagne model isn’t bad, but realistically, how many modern couples epitomize the animated film typecast we grew up with? Not my husband and me. Our idea of romance is a ski-in/ski-out lodge, stealing a kiss in the trees between powder turns, and a CrossFit workout. What about you and your sweetie? When you’re planning a getaway from daily life, write your own version of romantic. After all, it’s your vacation. And if those plan...

02092019 – Bike and CrossFit

A little before and after shots! It was -8 when I left the house, so I tried using the silk balaclava, but even the thin silk was too much to breathe through.  Plus it is hard to spit and blow snot rockets while wearing one! My sister said that I took it off just for the beard pic!  The Back 40 was well groomed and packed down.  A snowshoer had been quite meticulous about stepping side by side and creating a wide trail to ride on.  It felt good, it is definitely not easy going as my 4 mph reflec...

01262019 – CrossFit and Ski

The roads were a bit slick this morning and there was an accident in the tunnel on the way to and from CrossFit. Kids and I ended up being about 10 minutes late. They had me do 5 minutes on the Assault Bike as I had missed the warm-up. I missed a little bit of time in the Deadlift window, but that was ok. Deadlift to a technical Heavy 5 – so making sure that form stayed good through a heavy set of 5. We were supposed to do a light set first so I started with 95#, then 135#, then 185# then...

The Sneakers You Need For Every Type Of Workout

When you're in the market for a new workout sneaker, there are obviously a lot of factors that come into play, including whether they'd look good in a gym selfie and if they're within your budget. But the question that should really matter in your quest is, will this shoe be functional and comfortable for the types of workouts you typically do?Wearing the wrong type of shoe for a workout is kind of like trying to eat soup with a fork — not very productive and potentially dangerous. Your feet ar...

01242019 – CrossFit

Today there was no school and I had a training in Edina so I was able to go to the 5:30am CrossFit class. Always good to be back and twice in one week! More of the regulars were there so it was fun to catch up with them. We did some muscle up practice as our warmups. I did 4 rounds of 10 hollow body band pull downs, 3 jumping pops on the low bar, and 2 slow eccentric releases on the bar (slow lowers). Thursdays are an easier day so we had a 2 part MetCon with no measure. The first pa...

01212019 – CrossFit & Bouldering

I opted to get up for 5:30am class to make sure I actually went and didn’t drag the kids along!  It was another dosey of a workout. We did 4 rounds of gymnastics as our warmup. First was ring pushups, then ring muscle up transitions, and then slow lowers in the rings. Jeff had lots of good corrections for me and loved my beard! There was no weightlifting component but a long metcon with 25 minute time cap. The work was  10 rounds for time of: 15 wallballs 20# 10 toes to shoulder 5 power cleans 7...

01202019 – Ski

Two different ski sessions, two types of skiing and two times of winter fun! The first session was solo at 6am with the temperature at -3f. I slipped out and was the first skier to hit the trails on the cold morning. I was working on my skate skiing. I’d go from moments when it seemed to be going well to frustration over not being able to get into the rhythm.  I know it was only my second session so I’m trying to not get too discouraged.  I also read later that colder temps make the snow slowe...

01192019 – CrossFit

I had hoped to run or ski before the 10am CrossFit class but that didn’t work for our schedule and it was cold out! I took the kids to their CrossFit class and joined the 10am group was we waited for 9am to finish up. Our warm up was 5 rounds of 8 kipping knees to elbow and 3 per arm kettlebell windmills. I got some good correction on my windmill as I wasn’t doing a good hip hinge with it. We then did a 5×3 Back Squat. It was supposed to be 75% which would have been 150 for me, but wh...

How to Learn Jump Rope Double Unders

Double unders are jumping rope, but harder. Your body is still going straight up and down, and the rope is just going around and around. But you have a much higher chance of smacking yourself in the ankles or the back of the head, compared to regular jumping, and that’s why it feels so satisfying when you get it…Read more...

01182019 – CrossFit

Finally back at the gym! I had hoped to earlier in the week but forgot to sign up and was waitlisted. I don’t usually look at the workouts, I wouldn’t have skipped this one. I think lots of people did though! We are in a prep cycle for the CrossFit Open. And a lot of that is doing old open workouts. Mike was the only other person who showed up for the 3:30 class to do 13.1 with me! This was rough! Here is the RX written workout from the website: MEN – includes Masters Men up to 54 y...

"The 'spiritual but not religious' of now is not the old New Age."

"What I have been seeing is that this version has much more depth. It has a lot of substance. The conversation I have on the show is really intelligent — we value the life of the mind. It’s not something that is in a category of "This is where my emotions and my spiritual life are" — it shows up in how people do their jobs or the workplaces they want to create or how they think about their life trajectory.... I grew up in an immersive southern world that had all the answers. I do love deep relig...

01032019 – CrossFit

Finally felt healthy enough to work out! The Influenza A definitely has a long tail of getting back to 100% and I’m definitely not there yet. My last fever was on Christmas Day so it’s been over a week and I’ve still had a lot of congestion, lung mucus, and just being worn out. I’ve taken more naps in the past few weeks than I can remember!  I decided to do Solcana’s WOD instead of coming up with my own. I might have been better off doing some bodyweight workout, but oh well!  I had to do some m...

Join Analog Social Media

A phenomenon I noticed when researching Digital Minimalism is that many people are confused by the creeping unease they feel about their digital lives. This confusion is caused in part by problems of scope. When you take an activity like social media, for example, and zoom in close, you isolate behaviors like commenting on a friend’s picture, or encountering an interesting link, that seem mildly positive. What harm could their possibly be in clicking a heart icon? When you zoom out, h...

12142018 – CrossFit

Ahhh.. another Friday afternoon workout.  It was actually a decent day at work so that was nice! We did a bear crawl, jog, inch worm, and lunges before heading into our tripod stand practice.  It is getting easier to get up into the tripod for sure. This week was a Clean and Push Press 6 sets working up to a heavy set of 1 Clean and 3 Push Press. I started at 65 and then did 75, 80, 85, 90, 95. 95 was definitely heavy.  Bobby showed me how to widen my grip for the Push Press which should help me...

12122018 – CrossFit

I was awoken early this morning and couldn’t fall back asleep.  I also get the daily EOD (email of the day) from CrossFit so I knew the mainsite workout was 4×10 Deadlift.  My new weight set in the basement would work great for that, so I finally got out of bed and did a little warmup before doing 4 sets of 10 deadlifts.  It should have been adding weight each set, but I decided to keep it at the same weight 135#.  The first set felt stiff, but by the last set they were feeling good.  I definite...

12072018 – CrossFit

Today we did some more Tripod holds for warmup.  I was able to do all 7×15 second holds in the tripod position.  That was an improvement from last week. The weight lifting portion was 5 sets of Clean and Push Press.  One clean and 5 push presses per set.  Working to a heavy set.  I was able to work up to a set of 90#.  I got some good pointers about hand placement for the Push Press that will hopefully improve my form. The MetCon was the Baseline workout. Baseline is For time: 500m row 40 squats...

Harvest Is Coming: Choices Have Consequences

I am thankful for the recent emphasis on Christ-centered interpretation of Scripture. It is a welcome balance to the tendency to turn Bible stories into mere moral lessons. However, while all Scripture points to Christ it does not follow that every Scripture has to be an allegory of the Cross. I am especially bothered by what some do with the book of Proverbs. Solomon gave his sons practical wisdom to guide them in choosing God’s path over the world’s folly. Lady Wisdom isn’t a type of Christ bu...

11302018 – CrossFit

Talk about a rough ending to the workday.  I’m glad I was able to go straight to the gym and work it out! We are in a new cycle and are doing tripod stands.  7×15 second holds. I did the first couple in a pike position before getting my knee up onto my elbows at least partially for the rest.  We did a longish MetCon for time of: 200 single unders, 50 situps, 10 deadlift at 185, 150 single unders, 40 situps, 8 deadlift, 100 single unders, 30 situps, 6 deadlifts, 50 single unders 20 situps, 4 dead...
