The Great Escape - Day 24: Seward and another Boat Tour

July 13Today we left the Celebrity Millenium Cruise Ship.  Debarking proved to be a no fuss no muss process, a job well done overall by the cruise ship. Here's a coincidence for you, back in May of 2013, I was in Steward riding my 2011 Ural Patrol Valencia.  I wrote on the blog how my stay at Seward was cut short as I saw this cruise ship come in and I expected hordes of people to flood the little town of Seward.Link to the 2013 posting:  LINK.Here's pics from that 2013 posting: From May 10, ...

The Great Escape - Day 23: Hubbard Glacier

Today was the "Big Finale" for the cruise.  The Hubbard Glacier, stretching over 76 miles from its origin in the Yukon Territory to Disenchantment Bay in Alaskan waters. We'd been told we'd get as close as 1/2 mile....well, conditions were excellent today and the captain got us  much closer than 1/4 mile!  He apparently beat his previous record from last year in terms of getting close.  The Alaskan Tour guide who's been doing presentations on upcoming locales said he'd never been this close i...

The Great Escape - Day 22: Scootering in Skagway, AK

Jul 11Again we woke docked to a new port.  This time it was Skagway, AK, Garden City of Alaska apparently.Serving as an entry point into the interior via either the Chilkoot or White Pass route for "Stampeders", the wannabe miners of the Gold Rush, to the town of Dawson City in the Yukon Territory.  Skagway, with the help of a railroad and a reputation for being less difficult than Chilkoot Pass; remains today while the town of Dyea has withered to nothing. The regular population of Skagway is 83...

The Great Escape - Day 21: Juneau and the Mendenhall Glacier

Jul 10We woke up with the ship docked at the pier in Juneau, AK.Quaint little buildings pier side, but perhaps not as quaint as Ketchikan.  The buildings here near the water hug the walls of the canyon or fjord that makes up this part of the harbor. Two back to back excursions today....The first was for Whale Watching in Auke Bay.  After yesterday's incredibly close encounters with whales at Icy Strait Point, this outing proved an expensive disappointment.Crowded conditions, pushy morons, rai...

The Great Escape - Day 20: Icy Strait Point's Marine Wildlife

July 9 We arrived at Alaska's Icy Strait Point shortly after breakfast I believe.  It's a spot known for its marine wildlife (whales, sea lions, sea otters and such) and there's an "adventure center" run by the local native tribe that offers such things as zip lining, boat tours and such. Arriving at Icy Strait Point's docking facility We were signed up for a Zodiac tour of the area to find its wildlife in the mid-afternoon so the morning was spent relaxing both onboard and on the sho...

The Great Escape - Day 18: Cruise Day 2

Jul 7A sea day today.  This means we were at sea and no port calls. After breakfast, we toured the ship's galley to get an idea of the effort and production involved with serving an average of 14000 meals each day! The executive chef (rank is noted by black kerchief around neck) who led our tour group At sea, the ship's crew provides presentations of this and that matter....Martha attended one on the future cruises in Europe and she managed to win a bottle of wine during the "testing" that...

The Great Escape - Day 19 Part 1: Ketchikan, Alaska

Jul 8, Sunday. Excursion into Ketchikan, Alaska today.  As they like to say, a drinking town with a fishing problem.  :) We arrived before 6AM, in fact, I woke to see the ship on final approach to the pier!  A bit foggy in in the hills above the town of Ketchikan early this morning. After breakfast, it was an early start for a bus-borned excursion to Alaska Rain Forest Sanctuary for a short walk in the temperate rain forest.  They get at least 200 inches of rain here in Ketchikan,...

The Great Escape - Day 17: Cruise Ship Day 1

July 6.Well we boarded our cruise ship, the Celebrity Millenium with zero issues or problems I'm happy to report.  The cruise people really have the process down pretty good I must say. We're cruising with a couple of friends from our Fort Bragg days, Jane and Larry.  They're cruise veterans so we were learning the ropes the easy way.  A couple of last views of Vancouver Soon enough, we were on deck, at a bar, having a drink while we waited for lunch to be served and our rooms to be declared ...

The Great Escape - Day 16: Last full day in Vancouver

July 5Didn't get to do any touristy stuff, though Martha and her friend Sue got in a visit to a park while I had to do work.We did go and find the H.K. BBQ Master dining establishment that I'd been introduced to by Bobskoot and Yvonne back in 2013 when I was last in Vancouver. They make this Roast Pork that is just as good as my Mom's cooking.  The owner and chef has won many awards for his cooking as well.  We got lunch here this time, Martha, Sue and I. We missed you Bob, here's a pic of Bob a...

The Great Escape - Day 13 & 14 Traveling to Vancouver, B.C.

Not much to report about July 01, Canada Day.  The morning was spent prepping and packing for the next phase of the Great Escape: Vancouver. We did pack Thing One onto a shuttle for the ride down to SeaTac Airport to catch a flight back to Colorado on his own.  First time he's flown by himself but since he turns 21 soon, we figured he could do it easily enough.  I'm happy to report no issues.Tuesday, we experienced Amtrak's Cascade Line which we boarded at the Everett Train Station.  Not exactly ...

The Caribbean Tells Tourists, “We Want You Back!”

This past September, two Category 5 hurricanes, Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria, wreaked havoc on the Caribbean islands. Lives were lost and there have been billions of dollars’ worth of damage to the buildings and infrastructure to many of the islands like Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Turks and Caicos, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and more. Months later, many of the Caribbean islands have only just regained power and water – while others, like those in Puerto Rico, are still waiting. Toda...

PLAYMOBIL’s Cruise Ship

I received a Cruise Ship to help facilitate my review. Set sail for some high-seas fun on the Cruise Ship! Relax in your spacious guestroom, complete with beds, a sitting area, and private bathroom. Simply pull out the lower deck for easy access and,...
