The Chicago Transit Authority has started in-service testing of its next-generation rail cars — the 7000 series — which were built at a new facility in the Hegewisch neighborhood on the city’s Far Southeast Side. The 10 prototype cars began running April 21, 2011, on the Blue Line to O’Hare International Airport, with plans to rotate to other routes during the year, CTA spokesman Brian Steele said. The first new cars to hit the CTA tracks in 10 years are part of a $632 million order for 400 rai...

Stop bill forcing public to support government union bargaining

California’s public employee unions enjoy a vast array of special benefits, ranging from the power to collect union dues to exemptions from the kind of campaign contribution and reporting restrictions that apply to most other organizations. It seems only reasonable, though, for unions to pay the full tab for their own collective-bargaining efforts. A new bill from Sen. Connie Leyva, D-Chino, would eliminate one of the meager ways that the state limits taxpayer support for teachers’ union activit...

California school reopening row nears climax

California’s management of the COVID-19 pandemic has been, to say the least, erratic with ever-changing state decrees on business openings and closings and personal conduct and, most recently, a chaotic rollout of vaccinations. There has been, however, one constant. The state’s public schools quickly shut down when Gov. Gavin Newsom declared an emergency and assumed one-man command of the crisis and with few exceptions have remained shuttered ever since. The shutdown, coupled with other restrict...

7 Techniques That Will Improve Guest Blogging For Your Brand

Question: Is guest blogging one of the best inbound marketing strategies for your brand? Answer: Yes. At first, this might make little sense. Reflections on the first all-virtual CES

I’ve spent more time than I care to mention over the last several years wondering aloud about the value of in-person trade shows. There’s something seemingly antiquated in the idea of jamming a bunch of people in a room, walking from booth to booth. Sure, they’ve fulfilled an important need in the past, but aren’t they just a relic in this hyperconnected world? I’ve always assumed that if trade shows were to go extinct, it would be a gradual process — a slow fade into cultural irrelevance, like ...

Unions wrong to drag their feet on school re-openings

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s new plan to reopen kindergarten through sixth grade classes beginning in the spring finally puts the state on a needed forward course. Although we appreciate the parameters of his “Safe Schools for All” framework, we’re troubled by the governor’s willingness to put union priorities above the needs of parents and students. In particular, the plan “hinges on districts with collective bargaining agreements to reach memorandums of understanding with their labor partners,” as the ...

CES Daily: Welcome to Ad Age’s special-edition newsletter

Nearly one year into the COVID-19 pandemic, events that are “unprecedented” no longer need an introduction as such. This year’s virtual CES is no exception. At the first CES, held in New York 54 years ago during the Summer of Love, pocket radios and integrated-circuit TVs dominated the headlines. Wow! It goes without saying that the show has changed considerably since then, swapping Manhattan for Las Vegas, videocassettes for streaming, and Atari’s “Pong” for million-dollar esports leagues. B...
