Chargers keeping options open, but Brian Daboll appears to be the front-runner

The Chargers’ second round of interviews for their head coach opening was starting to take shape Thursday when Robert Saleh was reported as the first candidate to land a follow-up meeting. But that second interview won’t occur because Saleh was announced as the New York Jets’ head coach Thursday night. As of Friday afternoon, there’s no second round of interviews to speak of regarding the Chargers. There’s silence coming from Costa Mesa as other teams schedule second interviews or have locked in...

Affirm's huge IPO pop - Citi wealth shakeup - Bank earnings sneak peek

Max Levchin, Affirm CEO Getty Stop me if you have heard this before: A high-profile tech startup with a well-known founder went public, and the stock went ballistic. Affirm made its public debut Wednesday (more on that below). As is the case with other recent tech IPOs, the stock surged once trading began, rising as much as 110% above its initial offering price of $49. We're written a lot about the IPO market exploding in recent months, but some of those stories are worth revisiting around ...

What Is Your First Political Memory?

For the past nine months, Amy and I have started our morning together. I get up, pee, weigh myself, brush my teeth, meditate for 20 to 30 minutes, and then we have “morning coffee” together. Morning coffee lasts for two cups of coffee (one regular, one decaf). This ends up being between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on what we are talking about. After spending the vast majority of our 30 years together on the road until a few years ago, this has been an incredible joy for me. Regardless of the...

Chargers’ Tom Telesco begins hiring process for third head coach

Chargers general manager Tom Telesco thanked Anthony Lynn for his four years as head coach and mentioned why Lynn deserves another head coaching gig. As for why it didn’t work with the Chargers, Telesco didn’t say much besides that the team didn’t win enough under Lynn the past two seasons. “The one thing I don’t want to get lost here is, because he is such a great human being, Anthony is an excellent football coach,” Telesco said Wednesday, two days after the Chargers fired Lynn. Lynn had a win...

No. 1 Alabama beats No. 4 Notre Dame 31-14 in relocated Rose Bowl

By STEPHEN HAWKINS ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Alabama rolled into another College Football Playoff championship game. DeVonta Smith caught three of fellow Heisman Trophy finalist Mac Jones’ four touchdown passes, Najee Harris ran for 125 yards with a high-hurdling highlight and top-ranked Alabama beat No. 4 Notre Dame 31-14 in the relocated Rose Bowl game Friday to reach its fifth CFP title game. While the location for this Rose Bowl was truly untraditional, the Crimson Tide (12-0, No. 1 CFP) playi...

No. 1 Alabama beats No. 4 Notre Dame in relocated Rose Bowl

By STEPHEN HAWKINS ARLINGTON, Texas — A truly untraditional Rose Bowl setting, a very common result for Alabama in the College Football Playoff. With Heisman Trophy finalists DeVonta Smith and Mac Jones, the top-ranked Crimson Tide rolled into their fifth CFP championship game in six seasons. Smith caught three of Jones’ four touchdown passes and Najee Harris ran for 125 yards with a high-hurdling highlight in a 31-14 victory over No. 4 Notre Dame in a CFP semifinal Rose Bowl played inside about...

Alabama, Notre Dame ready for relocated Rose Bowl clash

ARLINGTON, Texas — Playing a Rose Bowl game deep in the heart of Texas is anything but normal. Top-ranked Alabama being in a College Football Playoff semifinal game is nothing new. The SEC champion Crimson Tide (11-0) are in a familiar position despite the chaos of playing during the pandemic. No. 4 Notre Dame, which finished runner-up in the ACC after temporarily giving up its cherished independent status, gets another playoff chance two years after a big thud in the same stadium. “We’re going ...

How college football players handled season of COVID-19

The Saturday night after winning an afternoon home game is one of the best times to be a college football player. Family and loved ones usually await with congratulatory hugs. Then there is a nice dinner and maybe more celebrating with teammates and friends. Few things get a college town hopping like a football victory. But not this season. “I’d pretty much go home, lay on my couch, watch (video) cut-ups of the game like two or three times. Probably go pick up some food,” Notre Dame offensive ta...

In case you haven’t heard, there will be no 2021 Rose Parade due to the pandemic. That’s the bad news. Here’s the good news: If you turn on your TV at 8 a.m., you’ll still have a way to welcome 2021 with the Tournament of Roses in its two-hour television special. It’s expected to showcase many of the traditional Rose Parade festivities — including musical performances from top tier acts, marching bands, as well as reflections and highlights from previous years. Daddy’s Hangout Final Weekend of the 2020 NFL Season Predictions

Welcome to the 2020 NFL Finale of 2020 with so many questions still need to be answered. My record from a week ago was 6-3 and my overall mark is 82-46. The winning percentage rises a little from 63.9 to 64.1%. The Jets are currently on a two game winning streak after beating the Browns. With the return of George Kittle, the 49ers defeated the Cardinals and possibly knocking them out of playoff contention. Pittsburgh used a miraculous comeback to defeat the Colts and clinch the AFC North title...

It’s official: Pasadena will allow Rose Bowl name to be used in Texas, but just this once

The Pasadena City Council will allow the College Football Playoff semifinal in Texas to call itself the “Rose Bowl Game,” marking just the second time in history that the Rose Bowl won’t be played in Pasadena — something city officials hope won’t happen again. New Year’s Eve 2020: 5 cool ways to ring in 2021 at home

Goodbye, 2020! And don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Yes, it’s finally time to flip the calendar on a year that, to be honest, most people will not miss one iota. But just because 2020 wasn’t ideal doesn’t mean that its final evening can’t be. Thus, let’s turn our thoughts toward Dec. 31, which certainly will be a New Year’s Eve like no other due to what’s still going on with the coronavirus pandemic. People won’t be (or, at the very least, shouldn’t be) going to parties or any other bi...

A 49ers Turnaround: From Super Bowl To Losing Season

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP/CBS13) — San Francisco has gone from the Super Bowl to a losing record in a turnover of a season. While the defending NFC champion 49ers would have had to win their last three games just to break even, they won’t even be able to do that after a 41-33 loss Sunday to the Dallas Cowboys, who took the lead for good with scores after Nick Mullens threw two interceptions in the fourth quarter. No Rose Bowl game in Pasadena this year; CFP semifinal moves to Texas amid coronavirus concerns

Ending decades of tradition, there will be no Rose Bowl game in Pasadena on New Year’s Day. Under mounting pressure over the last few days, the Rose Bowl game will not take part in the 2021 College Football Playoff on Jan. 1, it was announced late Saturday night by the Tournament of Roses and College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock.
