Daimler Trucks CEO Martin Daum told Business Insider that he thinks Tesla's electric truck is 'fun,' but that he takes competition from them seriously. Romania coach Christoph Daum faces fishing rod jibe at news conference

It's probably fair to describe Romania national team boss Christoph Daum's relationship with the national press as "fractious". Indeed, the veteran German coach was recently filmed flying into an emotional rage during a news conference after being forced to field what he obviously deemed to be crass questions about his job. Daum also recently stated that the Gazeta Sporturilor newspaper was "only good for wrapping fish," which led to bizarre scenes at another media conference on Monday...

What We Get Wrong About Women Who Don't Have Kids

Throughout history, there have always been women who pushed back against the roles society set for them. Suffragettes fought for the right to vote; lesbians fought (and continue to fight) to have their relationships acknowledged publicly and treated equally under the law. But it’s still somewhat taboo for women to push back against the role they have occupied the longest: mother.Childfree and childless have just one syllable’s difference, but they are a huge chasm apart. To treat all women who ...

Estimating Influenza Outbreaks Using Both Search Engine Query Data and Social Media Data in South Korea

Background: As suggested as early as in 2006, logs of queries submitted to search engines seeking information could be a source for detection of emerging influenza epidemics if changes in the volume of search queries are monitored (infodemiology). However, selecting queries that are most likely to be associated with influenza epidemics is a particular challenge when it comes to generating better predictions. Objective: In this study, we describe a methodological extension for detecting influenza...

Meghan Daum is on the “read everything she writes” list for me. I loved her essay collection The Unspeakable. She recently edited a collection of essays from other writers titled Selfish, Shallow, and Self-Absorbed: Sixteen Writers on Their Decision Not to Have Kids. It’s a set of wise, authentic women and men who decided not to have children and who share their reflections on the matter. Daum writes in her introduction, “It’s about time we stop mistaking self-knowledge for self-absorption — and...
