I’ve always backed Labour. But on Thursday, I will vote Green for the first time | Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett

My vote for the Green party in the European elections is a vote for a commitment to a better future – and a vote against BrexitFor the past few weeks, I’ve been considering voting Green in the European elections, and I think I’m going to do it.It will be my first time voting Green. The environment is my main motivation. In many ways, I’ve always been an ideal Green party voter. I grew up vegetarian, surrounded by people who grew their own veg, and living next to a lake filled with the rare fish,...

How a Nintendo 64 Pokémon Game Helped Set the Stage for ‘Detective Pikachu’

Those maniacs went ahead and did it. They finally made a life-action Pokémon movie that brings the world of Pikachu, Bulbasaur and even the nightmare-inducing Mr. Mime to life. It’s been 21 years since both the first games, Pokémon Red and Blue, and the anime premiered in the US in September 1998. Since then we’ve got more than a thousand episodes of an anime series, 21 animated movies and over 30 video games, but all of those mostly showed the Pokémon as collectable trophies or the combat...

How to talk to kids about climate change without scaring them

When my 4-year-old daughter discovered the documentary series Blue Planet II, thanks to a relative who shares her love of marine life, I was thrilled that she wanted to watch it instead of animated standbys like The Octonauts and Llama Llama.  I counted it as a parenting victory: My preschooler liked science and exploration and David Attenborough's voice. When things got real and one sea creature ruthlessly ate another, I explained that it was an example of the food chain. Her grimace t...

David Attenborough on How to Save Our Planet

In this short video essay, David Attenborough succinctly describes the main problem of the anthropocene (that modern humans are not living sustainably as they once could as hunter gatherers), explains the effect we’ve had on the planet, and then suggests how we can fix things (italics mine): The plan for our planet is remarkably simple. Reduce our impact by making sure that everything we do, we can do forever. Sustainability is such a buzzword these days that I have long since stopped thin...

Weekend reading: Capital gains tax receipts are soaring. A good bad problem.

What caught my eye this week. F igures from HMRC, as reported on in the Financial Times [search result] show the tax take from capital gains tax and inheritance tax rising fast in recent years: Much of the increase is apparently due to growing tax receipts from property sales. The FT quotes Sean McCann, a chartered financial planner at NFU Mutual: “Landlords are being caught in a very effective pincer movement from the taxman. From one side the higher rate tax relief on mortgage interest is ...

'Air bear' flight to Russian Arctic returns polar bear who drifted 400 miles south on ice

An “air bear” helicopter flight has returned a polar bear to the Russian Arctic after he drifted more than 400 miles south on an ice floe. Fishermen ran into the two-year-old male bear last week near Tilichiki, an isolated village in the Kamchatka region on Russia's Pacific coast.  Since polar bears are not usually found in Kamchatka, it is believed that the marooned bear had floated in on a piece of ice from the neighbouring Chukotka region. He was nicknamed “Umka” after the playful polar b...
