Dispatch 3: Return to America: Primitive Graffiti in Portland

When you are assessing the situation in your area, Watch the Graffiti. Make photographs. Remember what you can. Valuable. As I travel through America, I will make thousands of photos of graffiti. Watch for patterns. Example: if I see certain graffiti in Seattle, and then see same again in DC, but nowhere else, that can be a clue. Don't just walk by graffiti. That's like walking past the prints and poo on the jungle floor without stopping when you are tiger hunting. Often I just photog...

Trump’s National Garden of American Heroes in MY Neighborhood?

Let me introduce a national park you’ve never heard of – the Greenbelt National Park, 1,200 acres of woods, trails and campsites just 10 miles outside of DC. It’s even near a subway station, so no wonder it’s popular with visitors to the area, domestic and international. City residents sometimes camp here, too, enjoying an easy get-away in nature. Its 174 campsites cost just $20 a night. Here’s a nice video about the park. The park is less than a mile from my house, so I’ve visite...

The good news is that all the origi...

TikTok rumors beg the question: Did Trump solve anything?

Over the past 24 hours, rumors picked up by Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal and CNBC have put some boundaries on what a possible deal between Oracle and TikTok’s parent company ByteDance will look like. In its current incarnation floating around the DC press corps, it appears that TikTok’s data on American users will be stored in Oracle’s cloud, with Oracle acting as a “trusted technology partner.” Oracle will have some sort of real-time source code verification duty, in which it will a...

Remember that Trump photo op in front of St. John's Church in Lafayette Square in DC, on June 1st, where American citizens were tear-gassed? It’s a Bird

In late May, Christian Cooper was birdwatching in Central Park when he was accosted and abused for the color of his skin by a white woman after he asked her to leash her dog. Cooper, who is both an avid birdwatcher (he’s on the board of directors for the NYC Audubon Society) and a pioneering comics writer (he was Marvel’s first openly gay writer and editor), has combined his experiences and interests into a new graphic novel for DC Comics called It’s a Bird. From the NY Times: The slim, 10-p...

Milestone Returns… Maybe for Real This Time

Sorry, I’m so jaded sometimes… I want to see Milestone return. This comic company, published by DC but independently run, brought necessary diversity to superhero comics from their launch in 1993 until they stopped publishing comics in 1997. Their launch titles — Hardware, Icon, Static, and Blood Syndicate — starred mostly Black characters and were written and illustrated by Black creators and other people of color. They are probably best remembered these days for a successful, award-winning car...
