Eighties pop star Debbie Gibson: ‘The price of fame is high. I have a therapist on speed dial!’

Squeaky clean, uncool and old before her years, the US singer blazed a trail for young women creating their own material. Having dealt with stalkers, addiction and illness, she’s backThirty-three years ago – in musical terms, an epoch – Debbie Gibson was the most famous American teen pop star on earth. At 17 she was as loved by teenagers as Billie Eilish was at 17, in polar opposite ways. Gibson, uncool and critically dismissed, was the wholesome, toothsome innocent who sang upbeat, unapologetic...

Halloween Horror Movie Marathon: Do you dare watch them all?

Halloween isn’t just for Oct. 31 for anymore. Some people like to start celebrating the occasion in September, while others see it as a year-round excuse to watch scary movies, down mass quantities of candy and cosplay with gusto. But we’re going to take a more moderate approach to the holiday here, choosing to limit the celebration to just the month of October. Of course, we dig candy — especially Peanut M&M’s — and have no issues with cosplay. Yet, our favorite thing about Halloween is binging...

Lilly Hiatt Delivers Potent New Track, "P-Town" (premiere + interview)

You also wrote about your sister on "Rae" and about traveling with her while she worked with the homeless on "Some Kind of Drug". She threads through both those songs. I could try to be discreet about that, but I really can't be. She had a job working with a nonprofit here, Open Table Nashville. She was in contact with many homeless people, getting them housing, resources, fighting uphill battles daily. That song emerged after riding around with her to the spots where she helped people and me...

20 most memorable Southern California concerts of 2019

Though 2109 was filled with festivals, intimate one-off performances and major tours coming through Southern California, it was also a year with many farewell jaunts. We said goodbye to Elton John as he came through the area with several evenings of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, Peter Frampton made a couple of local stops on his Peter Frampton Finale: The Farewell Tour and the almighty Slayer went out in a blaze of glory with two final shows at The Forum. Had metal icon Ozzy Osbourne not ...

5 80’s Makeup Trends Making a Comeback

The 80’s were my decade. It is when I started adolescence and really began coming into my own. I was a fine, fun, and fierce female. I rocked crimped hair, side ponytails, and stacked socks with tight-rolled jeans, and I loved every second of it. Now that the 80’s are making a comeback, you can bet your booty that I’m ALL about it. While I might not bust out the Z. Cavaricci’s again anytime soon, I am loving the 80’s makeup trends. Bold Mascara Back in the day, it was Maybelline who had the b...

Sony Walkman Turns 30

The Popdose Comeback Club: Class of 2017 (Round 2)

There are some comebacks the world doesn’t need: Sean Spicer, Bill Cosby, another Spiderman reboot — and plenty that are long overdue: til Tuesday, Lone Justice, Heathers (imagine Veronica & friends navigating the adult world), and a big budget Buffy & Angel movie. In the music world, something incredible has been happening since the dawn of the 2010’s; beloved bands from the 70’s, 80’s and now 90’s – you know, the kind who typically milk their aging catalog on the nostalgia circuit – came roari...

Best of 2017: 10 Albums for the Buy Curious

In the age of streaming, does anyone still care about someone else’s top albums list when every album in the known universe is at your fingertips 24/7 (if you have good cell signal and a decent data plan of course). We here at Popdose hope so, as this is our second published list of the day. “Year End” lists had a purpose back when the music industry operated on the absurd business plan called the Circle of Love: artists would pour their hearts and souls into records, people would buy said recor...

Keeping an eye on opposition to street updates on Lincoln and Willamette

This planned diverter has some neighbors up in arms. If your understanding of Portland is only through Portlandia episodes or the glowing, brochure-like visions shared in magazines and conference presentations, you might think we ride everywhere on perfect paths while passersby wave at us benevolently. As real as it may seem, that happens only my dreams (thanks Debbie Gibson). The reality is often much different: Some Portlanders — even those who ostensibly “support biking” — will fight against...
