T-Mobile Under Pressure to Sweeten Sprint Package for DOJ Nod

The wireless carriers could try to sell additional assets to resolve the department’s concerns that the deal would harm competition. The question is whether there’s anything the companies can propose, like selling airwaves or another business unit, that will sway the department’s antitrust boss, Makan Delrahim. “I don’t see how any concessions short of somehow helping to set up a new fourth competitor could make this deal palatable to DOJ,” said Gigi Sohn, an opponent of the merger and a forme...

Don McGahn personally witnessed the most egregious of these acts. President Trump knows this.

Kamala Harris still not catching on with Democratic voters in California

There is no way Sen. Kamala Harris can win the Democratic nomination for the presidency unless she wins her home state of California. And by winning the Golden State, Harris has to do more than simply win more votes and delegates than her Democratic opponents on election day — she also has to capture the hearts, creativity and pocketbooks of big-time Democratic donors, Silicon Valley tech tycoons and Hollywood stars. Just think of it as the Charlie Sheen colloquial definition of “winning.” The p...

How confused Texas Democrats killed #SandraBland legislation, twice; or, how police kill a civil-rights bill when legislators overwhelmingly support it

The death of HB 2754 (White) limiting arrests for Class C misdemeanors was the strangest bill ride in which Grits has ever participated. Readers will recall that this provision was stripped out of the Sandra Bland Act in 2017, so reformers came back this year for another bite at the apple. The bill has overwhelming support in the Texas House, but now it's dead.Let's try to unpack what happened:In essence, Democrats killed the bill twice: first because they didn't understand the legislation (or w...

Dems killed #SandraBland bill - details to come

This blog has closely covered efforts at the Texas Legislature to pass HB 2754 limiting arrests for Class C misdemeanors, but the bill died last week  thanks to Democratic incompetence. (See coverage here and here, plus Twitter commentary.) First, Democrat Shawn Thierry misunderstood the bill, driving her colleagues to vote against legislation that, had it been law at the time, would have prevented Sandra Bland's arrest, incarceration and death. Then, on a motion to reconsider after Dems recogni...

California is Bringing Law and Order To Big Data. It Could Change the Internet in the US

California is embarking on a new era of privacy on the internet, and Xavier Becerra can't stop thinking about the failed debut of Obamacare. From a report: Back in 2013, Becerra, then a Democratic congressman from Los Angeles, watched as technical problems with the website marred the rollout of President Barack Obama's signature law, delaying sign-ups for health insurance and denting the public's faith in the new offering. Now, as California's attorney general, Becerra is worried that a similarl...

Trump may provoke U.S. lawmakers to impeach him: senior Democrat

Democrats are reluctant to impeach U.S. President Donald Trump, but he may provoke such a move by continuing to obstruct Congress' efforts to oversee his administration, a senior Democratic lawmaker said on Sunday. Adam Schiff, chairman of the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, told ABC's "This Week" that impeachment by the Democratic-run House would be politically divisive and unlikely to succeed in the Republican-run Senate. "But he (Trump) may get us there," Schiff said.
