World has ‘limited window of opportunity’ to eradicate polio, experts warn

There is a “limited window of opportunity” for the world to consign polio to the history books, experts launching a new five-year eradication plan have warned.  The Polio Endgame Strategy, published on Tuesday, says that efforts to eradicate the final cases of the disease are proving difficult due to war, mass migration and weak health systems – meaning many children miss out and do not receive vital vaccinations. The highly infectious childhood disease has been the target of a concerted elimina...

Ebola survivors comfort sick and frightened in Congo outbreak

Most health care workers need a surgical mask, goggles, hooded coveralls, an apron, rubber boots and two pairs of gloves to avoid catching the virus that typically kills around half those it infects. The outfits are hot, and in the stifling tropical temperatures of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo this limits the time they can spend with patients fighting for their lives in isolation units. The 33-year-old mother of six can spend entire days with patients at a treatment center in the North...

Ebola is real, Congo president tells skeptical population

Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi on Tuesday implored people in areas hit by the nation's worst-ever Ebola outbreak to accept the disease is real and trust health workers. Mistrust of first responders and widespread misinformation propagated by some community leaders has led many in affected areas of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to refuse vaccinations. Instead, they turn to traditional healers, whose clinics have contributed to the hemorrhagic fever's spread.
