Peruvian food at El Incomparable in Granada Hills lives up to the restaurant’s name

When you give yourself a name like “El Incomparable,” you’ve got a lot of live up to. And indeed, the word appears all over the menu — on the spiced whipped potatoes (causa El Incomparable), the Peruvian-Chinese fried rice (made with both rice and noodles — and oddly named Aeropuerto Incomparable), the mixed ceviched El Incomparable. The menu, perhaps with a suggestion of modesty, is only referred to as “Our Awesome Menu.” This is a restaurant with the confidence to announce its goodness. And th...

Maple restaurant at Descanso Gardens gets a redesign

Maple only opened at Descanso Gardens in 2016, but it’s just undergone a redesign. If it seems a tad soon to be making a change, the results are worth it. While the restaurant now has an airier, lighter feel, the Craftsman features that give the space its upscale style have been preserved and woven into a farmhouse look with mid-century modern accents. Light neutral tones brighten Maple, playing nicely against its dark wood. A striking mural of maple trees takes up a good stretch of one wall in ...

Standing Together, Standing Strong

I zipped my suitcase tight with everything I needed for the weekend but forgot one thing. I looked at my husband and confessed, “I can’t remember why I signed up for this.” Why was I flying across the country to spend several days at a conference with Christian women? Hadn’t I learned my lesson? Some of my favorite memories are with women circled around God’s Word — studying, learning, and growing together. Some of my most painful memories, however, also involve circles of women. We’re a funny b...

Extreme heat in the garden: How to keep plants healthy with water, shade and mulch

When the weather forecast calls for an unusually hot day across Southern California, that’s your cue. Turn on the garden hose, shade those plants, mulch. Taking precautions can help plants survive an overnight heatwave like the one gardeners recently experienced, and it won’t be the last one. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention projects extreme heat events are “expected to become more common, more severe, and longer-lasting as our climate changes.“ While most plants can endure triple-...

Porter Ranch doctor wants new health study on effect of Aliso Canyon leak, this time on benzene levels

A Porter Ranch physician is poised to examine levels of a cancer-causing chemical in the blood of hundreds of residents who live near the site of a massive San Fernando Valley natural gas leak that blew more than two years ago. About 40 community members gathered at a Porter Ranch Neighborhood Council meeting Wednesday night to listen to Dr. Jeffrey Nordella as he discussed his plan to measure the levels of benzene in residents’ blood. Benzene is a known carcinogenic chemical compound found in n...
