Matthews & Marner Paired as Maple Leafs Search for Answers

TORONTO — Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner are the last players off the ice at the conclusion of every Toronto Maple Leafs’ pre-game warmup. As the in-arena music blares and fans press against the glass looking for a souvenir, the talented duo flings pucks back and forth, attempting trick shots and high-wire moves with youthful exuberance. They’ve rarely skated on the same line in their careers, but the struggling Leafs seem willing to push that button in hopes of shaking their recent 3-7-0 tail...

Detroit’s Frustrating Power Play

from Dana Wakiji of the Wings website, After going 0-for-3 in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks, the Wings currently sit 25th in the league at 16.5 percent. Although the results have mostly been the same, Wings coach Jeff Blashill sees a difference. "I think one of the biggest things in coaching is that you fight through frustration," Blashill said. "You see things as they are. And the same can be said when you have success and sometimes it's fool's gold. You ...

MLK day... Is it all that?

I give credit to MLK for most of his efforts. Some are not something I support but overall he seemed to try and actually promote a positive change. I'm my opinion, that message of equality has been lost and replaced with the idea that a reversal of history is what should be strivved for. The day has become one where all the black radicals get on their podium and discuss how bad whites have been to blacks, how oppressed they are, and essentially push a guilt platform. But I believe MLK wasn't sol...

The Story Behind MLK’s Historic ‘I Have a Dream’ Speech

On August 27, 1963, the night before he delivered one of the most famous and moving speeches in American history, Martin Luther King Jr. still had not settled on what to say. King had only just begun composing the speech while traveling to the March on Washington. He initially considered recycling portions of a speech he’d delivered in Detroit two months earlier during a Walk to Freedom rally. In that soaring, 35-minute sermon he spoke of having a dream that our land would one day be united with...

The Seattle Talk Regarding Ken Holland

Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times believes the Seattle expansion team will hire a GM this year and lists a few names, including... It’s worth keeping an eye on Detroit, where longstanding GM Ken Holland has a year remaining on his contract after this season with former Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman poised as his successor. Yzerman, 53, is an obvious Seattle choice, given he built a Tampa Bay Lightning franchise – much of it under then-CEO Leiweke – currently leading the President’s T...

The Grind Line: Red Wings’ Keys to Present & Future Consistency

What’s The Grind Line? Apart from the once-famous line of Kris Draper, Kirk Maltby, and either Joe Kocur or Darren McCarty, The Grind Line is also The Hockey Writers’ weekly column about the Detroit Red Wings. Rebuilding Red Wings “Better Than” Record – Coach Blashill

BURNABY, B.C. — The NHL standings don't tell the whole story when it comes to the Detroit Red Wings, says coach Jeff Blashill. "I think we're a good team. I think we're a better team than our record has indicated, but that's my opinion," he said Saturday in Burnaby, B.C., where his squad was preparing to battle the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday. It's an opinion that star centre Dylan Larkin agrees with. "But we need to come out here and prove it, and prove it for a long time, long stretch...
