Revisiting David Poile’s Drafts – 1998

The Nashville Predators have been an NHL franchise since the 1998-99 season after the city was granted an expansion team in June 1997. In their 20 seasons of existence, there has been one constant: general manager David Poile, who’s served that role since the franchise’s inception. Therefore, he’s been the architect of every team that’s suited up, from the inaugural roster through the 2018-19 rendition. That means he’s been the decision-maker in a lot of drafts and has made a lot of picks, 178 t...

Penguins Make March a Month of Milestones

Evgeni Malkin has been the talk of the town in Pittsburgh since reaching the 1,000-point marker with two assists in a 5-3 win over the Washington Capitals on Mar. 12. Evgeni Malkin was honored before today's game for his impressive 1,000 point milestone. Geno, It has been our pleasure watching you play all these years. Rangers’ Inconsistency Wearing Thin on Quinn

When head coach David Quinn sleeps these days, is it possible that he dreams of a hockey team that consists of Brendan Lemieux at every position other than goaltender? If such a crazy scenario ever filled the head of the New York Rangers coach at night, it would be understandable. And it seems likely that such a theoretical dream would have occurred in the last couple of weeks. As seamlessly as Quinn has adjusted to the NHL game following a career in the college ranks, there are undoubtedly elem...

Maple Leafs’ Johnsson Proving Draft Position Doesn’t Matter

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Andreas Johnsson is currently producing a breakout performance in his first full season in the NHL. Johnsson has played on each of the Maple Leafs’ lines this season and has had fairly consistent success. He currently has 20 goals and 20 assists for 40 points in 64 games played this season. Needless to say, he has drastically outperformed his seventh round draft selection expectations. He was drafted 202nd overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Far from a sure-thi...

Flyers 2nd Half a Success Regardless of Outcome

There are 11 games remaining in the 2018-19 season, and the Philadelphia Flyers much closer to the playoff bubble than most thought they would be at this time. On Dec. 17, they were last in the Eastern Conference and most fans were thinking whether they preferred Jack Hughes or Kaapo Kakko, two highly-touted prospects in the upcoming draft. Yet now the question has shifted to, “Can they make the playoffs?” Even sniffing the playoffs was an afterthought in December, a pipe dream at best. Yet the ...

Canadiens Have New King of the Crease as Price Passes Plante

On Thursday night, Carey Price did all he could to secure a win for his Montreal Canadiens, keeping them in the game while the New York Islanders dominated play – controlling 64.5 percent of scoring chances and 69.2 percent of high-danger scoring chances, according to Natural Stat Trick – but his teammates didn’t cooperate in a 2-1 loss. Vegas Golden Knights Turning Assets Into Stars

When Las Vegas was granted the 31st NHL franchise, general manager George McPhee knew this would be no ordinary expansion draft. The game has changed immensely since the last expansion. The game is a lot faster, it requires more skill, and with the growth of hockey in general, there are a lot more players who can play the game at a high level. That led to a lot of teams having players they wanted to keep but could not because of the roster rules; teams were allowed to keep seven forwards, three ...

'Settled' Islanders set to face fading Red Wings

The New York Islanders displayed their formula for making the playoffs during their past two games. Not only did they improve their postseason prospects with those low-scoring victories, they also moved without striking distance of the Washington Capitals' lead in the Metropolitan Division. The Islanders will be seeking their third straight victory and fifth in the last six games when they travel to Detroit to face the Red Wings on Saturday afternoon.

Videos- The Better Team Won

from Ansar Khan of Mlive, Tampa Bay is a cut above the rest of the NHL, and the gap between the Lightning and the Detroit Red Wings is enormous. The Lightning boasts a collection of stars. The rebuilding Red Wings lack elite-level talent, which is magnified with the absence of their best player, Dylan Larkin. Even when games between the teams are close, the Lightning find a way to win. Tampa Bay overcame a three-goal deficit Thursday to defeat Detroit 5-4 at Little Caesars Are...

Push for the Playoffs: Lightning continue chasing '95-96 Red Wings

An historic regular season could be added to should they win a majority of the rest of their schedule. After the Presidents' Trophy, next in the Lightning's sights is the 62-win feat achieved by the 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings. It's fitting that Tampa is in Detroit tonight, looking to win their 54th game of the season, which would tie a franchise record.

Rangers’ Buchnevich Showing His Best Is yet to Come

The New York Rangers organization is no stranger to drafting players who end up fizzling out. There have been several occasions on which the Rangers drafted a player with the expectation that he’d be the next great player to shine under the lights of Madison Square Garden. At the start of the current decade, the Rangers drafted defenseman Dylan McIlrath hoping he’d become the next Dustin Byfuglien. He only played 36 games for the Rangers, fragmented over three seasons, scoring just four points w...

Nyquist heating up for red-hot Sharks

To plenty of people in the hockey world, the San Jose Sharks were one of the stealth winners of the trade deadline after landing Gustav Nyquist in a night owl trade with the Detroit Red Wings. The winger had been quiet early on, only managing an empty-net goal through his first four games with the Sharks. Tuesday presented a possible breakthrough, as Nyquist scored two goals in San Jose's 5-4 win against the Winnipeg Jets, giving him points (2G, 1A) during the Sharks' back-to-back set.
