Arturo Di Modica, Sculptor Of New York’s Charging Bull Sculpture, Has Died At 80

Di Modica was a “Sicilian-born sculptor best known for Charging Bull, 3.5 tons of bronze belligerence that he illegally deposited in Lower Manhattan one night in 1989.” But this wasn’t the first time he pulled such a stunt. Disappointed by a lack of interest in his first solo show in 1977, “Mr. Di Modica rented three trucks, and he and a group of friends drove eight of his enormous sculptures uptown to Rockefeller Center, where they deposited them in the dead of night. He was ordered to pay a s...

Link Dump

As per usual, interesting links from the depths of ye olde internets: The Stats of the Furious - A thorough accounting and visualization of a series that only kinda-sorta-deserves this kind of scrutiny. Also of note, Sonny Bunch's ranking of the Fast/Furious films. All of which is to say, these are fun films, but let's not overthink it. The Silence of the Lambs as a Romantic Comedy - This sort of thing is old and I don't think anyone will ever approach the already-produced Platonic ideal of Sh...

A Closer Look: Fearless Girl holds our place

Poor Antonio Di Modica. The sculptor of Wall Street 's iconic "Charging Bull" fears his symbol of capitalism has been drafted into the debate on a woman's place. Welcome to my world, Mr. Di Modica. The conversation on a woman's place plays in my head all day long as I read about denying health care to women in an early morning blog or, later in the day, walk into a crowded board room mainly populated by men. I'm much older than the feisty 4-foot tall bronze girl portrayed in the "Fearless Gir...

When Tiny Girls Terrify Grown Men

This column originally appeared in Emily Peck’s newsletter, a weekly email that looks at the convergence of women, economics, business and politics. Sign up here.  Look, it’s obviously the height of absurdity to be afraid of little girls. Yet, here we are. Earlier this week, the sculptor behind the 11-foot bronze bull, a symbol of the virile finance industry and an institution on Wall Street for decades, held a press conference to complain about a 4-foot statue of a little girl recently placed n...

Sculptor Of Wall Street's Charging Bull Says Fearless Girl Is Ruining His Art!

On International Women's Day last month, a sculpture of a Fearless Girl was installed in front of New York City's iconic Charging Bull on Wall Street. This defiant little bronze statue was temporarily installed as a symbol of equality and pressure for big investment firms to add more women to their boards. And just like the women she represents, Fearless Girl is already having to deal with some serious patriarchal bull. Related: Fearless Girl Vandalized To Look Like Trump Supporter! Specifically...

‘Charging Bull’ artist rails against ‘Fearless Girl’

The artist behind Wall Street’s charging bull statue isn’t happy about sharing the space with Fearless Girl, the statue built last month to bring attention to the lack of women on corporate boards. New York recently extended Fearless Girl’s permit through February 2018, but artist Arturo Di Modica wants her gone. He said it alters his own statue, recasting the bull as a villain. "Women, girls, that’s great, but that’s not what that (my sculpture) is,” Di Modica said in an interview… ...
