Dieter Rams Lists the 10 Timeless Principles of Good Design–Backed by Music by Brian Eno

Nearly all of us have heard the dictum "Less, but better," and nearly all of us have used Braun products. But how many of us know that both of those owe their considerable popularity to the same man? After studying architecture, interior decoration, and carpentry, the German industrial designer Dieter Rams spent 40 years at Braun, most of them as the company's chief design officer. There he created such hits as the 606 universal shelving system, the SK61 record player, and the ET66 calculat...

The MOFT Builds a Laptop-stand Right into your Laptop

I don’t think companies understand how valuable a laptop would be if they built a stand right into it. Until then, designs like MOFT will always be there to save the day.The laptop’s biggest pro has always been convenience, while its biggest con usually goes overlooked. Designed, as the name suggests, to be placed on the lap, the laptop is considered to be nothing short of an ergonomic nightmare, with a screen that makes you bend your neck till it aches, and a keyboard that causes wrist and fi...

Why ‘Rams’ Director Gary Hustwit Doesn’t Want Studios to Buy His Films

Most filmmakers dream of scoring a big studio deal, but not Gary Hustwit. The “Helvetica” director applies a “do it yourself” model to the release of his movies. “Rams,” his recent documentary about German industrial designer Dieter Rams, is Hustwit’s latest venture into self-distribution. “I don’t want to be paying someone else’s overhead,” said Hustwit. Tsatsas Meets Dieter Rams in a New Bag that Bridges Five Decades of Design

Good designers know all too well that as easy as it might be to design something functional, robust or beautiful, creating a product that combines all three qualities is actually a lot tougher; in fact we'd venture to say that it is an art form.

Thanksgiving Dinner Table Discussion Topics for Industrial Designers, Part 2: If Other Industrial Designers are Present

It's rare, but possible, that you're spending this Thanksgiving with a bunch of other industrial designers, rather than non-design-savvy family members who don't really get what you do. If that's the case, then you have a rare opportunity to have long, drawn-out discussions about design with your peers in a non-office setting. The addition of alcohol can make the discussion more lively. Here are some topics to get you started: 1. If Dieter Rams were to "sell out," which organization or product sh...

Sustainable Design Can Help Your Small Business and Improve the Environment

Smart businesses know that people, especially millennials and Gen Z, are increasingly concerned about the environment. In fact, a 2017 peer-reviewed study in the Lancet revealed that pollution continues to be a major global health concern. In response to this global trend, businesses are adopting environmentally-friendly strategies when they design products, product packaging, and when marketing their business. Environmentally-friendly strategies not only help the environment but can also help ...

Brand Identity for March, Simple and Long-lasting

Brand Identity for March, Simple and Long-lasting abduzeedo Oct 08, 2018 Dieter Rams taught us that good design is "long-lasting" with his 10 Principles of Good Design. It's for me a sometimes, almost forgotten principle in the age of the internet. Everything has become so ephemeral with new trends popping up and people following immediately. The information as we all know has been commoditized, so everyone has instant access, it's the inevitable resul...

2018 International Design Conference Recap

The IDSA conference is an annual affair bringing together a community of designers, educators, students and experts all connected by their commitment to the field of industrial design. The 2018 edition, reborn as the International Design Conference, represented a complete rethinking of this yearly tradition, where the organizers applied their design skills to redesign the whole experience. I'm happy to report that their efforts were a success, with many attendees commenting on how this was their...

Q&A: What Made You Want to Become an Industrial Designer?

In this age of surface flash, we're glad to see the Core77 reader is still interested in nuts-and-bolts industrial design. This is evinced by the fact that our slideshow of the previously-unseen prototypes of Belkin's TrueClear Pro is drawing a lot of eyeballs. While we were at Belkin's HQ, we asked four of them, including the VP of Design: What made you want to become an industrial designer in the first place? And how did you get to where you are now? Here are their tales. Beree Cox, Senior Indu...

Appliances: 3 Attractive Window Air Conditioners, High to Low

Is an attractive window air conditioner an oxymoron (where is Dieter Rams when we need him?). I thought so until I spotted a Friedrich Kuhl series window unit in a project by Remodelista Architect and Designer Directory member Messana O’Rorke, who spec’ed one in a lower Manhattan loft. Here’s a roundup of three we could live with, from high to low. Above: Spotted in the window in a West 22nd Street loft by Messana O’Rorke: a Friedrich air-conditioning unit. If your small business is trying to leverage social media for marketing, you’re probably struggling to build a large, engaged audience. You’re not alone. Most businesses have a tough time standing out among the sea of content on social media sites. Every 60 seconds there are 293,000 new posts and 136,000 new photos posted on Facebook alone. Simple Dieter Rams prints

I really like these prints for Rams, Gary Hustwit’s upcoming documentary about the legendary Dieter Rams. Each print features an object designed by Rams or his design team: the T41 radio, the ET66 calculator, the 620 chair, and the 606 shelving system. PS. You can still buy the calculator from Braun. Ok, it’s a reissue, but that means it won’t cost you 100s of dollars on eBay. Tags: design   Dieter Rams   Gary Hustwit   movies   Rams [Author: Jason Kottke]

How Logitech’s CEO used a 40-year-old design philosophy to shape his company

While on stage at TNW’s 2018 conference today, Logitech CEO Bracken Darrell spoke about his belief that everyone is a designer while they’re young, and that many companies, including his own, strive to achieve that same attitude again. As he puts it, we’re all naturally designers until we enter school. “Our education system does a great job of coaching us out of design.” Darrell covered his past during his talk, including his work with his work with German design-forward consumer products firm B...

How to Make Your Brand Design Flourish With a Human Touch

We've all heard the famous Dieter Rams quote, "Good design is as little design as possible." A great interface is one that the user doesn't see, think about or struggle to understand. In the words of Steve Jobs, "It just works." When it comes to digital products, this means putting the user at the center...

Finally! Dieter Rams Documentary by Gary Hustwit is On the Way

Dieter Rams appears sparingly in Gary Hustwit's "Objectified" documentary on product design. Perhaps that was for the best, as Hustwit's now working on a dedicated feature-length documentary on Rams, where we'll get to hear about his philosophies, processes and inspiration in-depth. Hustwit has released three teaser trailers: Rams - Teaser (Less and Better) from Film First on Vimeo. Rams - Teaser (Objects) from Film First on Vimeo. Rams - Teaser (Simplicity mic drop) from F...

Rams, a documentary about legendary designer Dieter Rams

Dieter Rams is one of the world’s most influential designers. Rams acolyte and Apple design chief Jony Ive has said of him: Dieter Rams’ ability to bring form to a product so that it clearly, concisely and immediately communicates its meaning is remarkable… He remains utterly alone in producing a body of work so consistently beautiful, so right, and so accessible. Gary Hustwit, director of Helvetica and Objectified, is making a documentary about Rams called Rams. Here are three short clips fro...

But, for Spalter, the most important tool is obsession. In an interview with 99U, he remembers learning early that the things you’re willing to waste time and energy on might just be the...

Ten new principles for good design

In the 1970s, legendary industrial designer Dieter Rams formulated his now-famous ten principles for good design. 5. Good design is unobtrusive. Products fulfilling a purpose are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the user’s self-expression. 6. Good design is honest. It does not make a product more innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is. It does not attempt to manipulate t...

Reader Submitted: A See-Through Clock Stripped Down to the Essential Basics

The Only Clock is a digital wall/desk LED clock with a hollow round face. When it comes to design, simplicity is often the best policy. The Only Clock was designed as a modern interpretation of a traditional analog wall clock. According to Dieter Rams, good design is as little design as possible. In the process of making the Only Clock, we were focused on essential design details—not burdening the object with redundancy. We used this philosophy to create an eye-catching and functional piece of ar...

There’s a synth symphony for 100 cars coming, based on tuning

100 cars, 100 sound systems, 100 different versions of the pitch A: Ryoji Ikeda has one heck of a polyphonic automobile synthesizer coming. The project is also the first new hardware from Tatsuya Takahashi after the engineer/designer stepped down from his role heading up the analog gear division at KORG. And so from the man who saw the release of products like the KORG volca series and Minilogue during his tenure, we get something really rather different: a bunch of oscillators connected to ca...

London Design Festival 2017: Just Another Chairfest

Last Friday, September 22, UK Prime Minister Theresa May described the June 2016 "Brexit" referendum as an opportunity for “imaginative and creative” solutions for the European Union. In the context of London Design Festival, the euphemism is equally coincidental and ironic. Central Saint Martins, for one, explicitly addressed Brexit—and subsequent geopolitical upheaval—in the expository text for its exhibition Creative Unions: “Creativity by necessity and inclination has to operate across borde...
