DIY: A Simple, Easy Cover for an Ugly Window Air Conditioner (for $15)

I have learned, over the past 79 days or so, that the apartment I moved into in January is not a good summer apartment. No matter which way my boyfriend and I configure the four windows in our place—windows open in the front and the back of the apartment, to catch a cross-breeze; front windows open only; all windows open, with shades drawn to keep out the sun—there’s not hint of air flow to be had. It is totally, completely still, and stifling hot. Which means I—who, in my last apartment, had th...

Here’s a DIY tablecloth for Fourth of July that’s so easy that truly anyone—from kindergarteners to the arts-and-crafts-averse—can make it. Perhaps best of all? It’s blessedly understated, which means it can have a life well after the fireworks are over. You don’t need any tools (just a couple new pencils, a box, fabric, and some paint) to make this blueberries-inspired DIY tablecloth. Why blueberries? Aside from the apple, is there a more American fruit? Besides, “July is prime time for this se...

Rehab Diary: How to Paint Furniture Like an Expert

This summer, my husband and I were driving on Cape Cod, when I spied a couple of midcentury modernesque chairs outside a thrift shop. “Stop!” I yelled–we were in need of dining chairs. When I asked the owner the price, he informed me that there were four more out back. “How much for all six?” I asked. “Thirty dollars for the set,” he replied. I gave him $35. Score! Only problem, someone had painted the chairs a pale puce green. But for $35, I was willing to put in the labor to paint them. Here’s...

DIY: Natural Turmeric-Dyed Tablecloth

Native to Southern India and identifiable by its show-stopping yellow, turmeric has been a staple in cooking and medicine for thousands of years. A member of the ginger family, it’s a key ingredient in curry and has countless health benefits. Turmeric is a natural alternative to chemical dyes, too: add a pinch or two to tint buttercream cake frosting, or pair it with red annatto to give cheese an orange coloring. I’ve been experimenting with turmeric as a technique for dying fabric, and here’s w...

Building beautiful little keycap watercolor vibrobots

My friend Steve Davee posted this fun project to Instructables. It's a perfect project for shut-in parents and kids to do together. The main body parts of the bots are keyboard keycaps and Q-tips/cotton swabs. An eccentric weight (pager) motor provides the bouncy movement that makes your vibrobots go. Dip the swabs in watercolor paints, place the little critter on some paper, and watch your little tabletop Jackson Pollackbot go to town. Image: YouTube

Build your own bagpipes out of a trash bag and record and learn to play in quarantine

Instructables.com has some new instructions on how to build your own bagpipes, and all you need is: 1 Garbage Bag or large plastic bag 2 Recorders (or 2 PVC Recorders:https://www.instructables.com/id/PVC-Recorder/) 2 Pens (You can also use a decent sized straw or a piece of hose) Scissors Tape It sounds a little ridiculous, but when you break it down, bagpipes are basically just a recorder with a drone with an attached airbag. DIY: Homemade Hand Sanitizer

With the news of the novel coronavirus spreading, keeping our hands—and homes—clean is more important than ever. For the former, washing your hands with soap for at least twenty seconds is best. But for the times you don’t have access to a sink, and if, like us, you’re having trouble getting your hands on hand sanitizer, you can make your own with rubbing alcohol and aloe vera gel. (The CDC says the mixture needs to be at least 60 percent alcohol in order to be effective.) And as an added bonus,...

Making a flying saucer clock (with data storage) controlled by a Raspberry Pi

I love this strange and wonderful project on Hackaday.io. It is digital clock which uses a ring of 60 NeoPixels in a 3D printed flying saucer and 12 lights on the inner ring to indicate the hours. It also does backups. And light shows. All it needs is a cow being sucked up into it. At the end of November 2019 my trusty old iomega StorCenter NAS (Network Attached Storage) started behaving eratically and would keep disappearing from the network and locking up every few hours. I immediately mad...
