BMW wants to sell you subscriptions to your car’s features

BMW today announced a number of updates to its in-car software experience during a VR press event, complete with a virtual drive through Munich to show off some of these features. These new updates will come to most recent BMWs that support the company’s Operating System 7 later this year — and new cars will already have them built-in. The company is able to launch these regular updates because it is now able to not just update the car’s infotainment system but virtually every line of code that’...

TaylorMade SIM Tour and Callaway Mavrik Sub Zero LS Triple Diamond Drivers

Filed under probably not coming to a retail store near you, TaylorMade and Callaway, the market leaders in the driver category both have new models on the USGA’s Conforming Clubs list this week. As per usual, the USGA doesn’t provide the measure of specificity we’d like, and so while we wait to hear back from both companies, all we can do is speculate. TaylorMade SIM Tour Missing among a 3-deep sea of SIMs at retail this season was a SIM Tour. For the past several generations of drivers, Tay...

BMW, Mercedes Benz end ‘long term’ automated driving alliance, for now

BMW Group and Mercedes-Benz AG have punted on what was meant to be a long term collaboration to develop next-generation automated driving technology together, less than a year after announcing the agreement. The German automakers called the break up “mutual and amicable” and have each agreed to concentrate on their existing development paths. Those new paths may include working with new or current partners. The two companies also emphasized that cooperation may be resumed at a later date. The pa...

The hands-free feature, called Active Drive Assist, is part of a larger package of advanced driver assistance features collectively called Ford Co-Pilot360 Active 2.0 Prep Package. Cobra Pars and Stripes SPEEDZONE Drivers

If you’re trying to wrap your head around the timing of the Cobra Pars and Stripes SPEEDZONE and SPEEDZONE Xtreme drivers, remember that if not for the misery that is 2020, the best golfers in the world would be competing in the U.S. Open at Winged Foot this week. Pars and Stripes was supposed to be Cobra’s limited-edition U.S. Open driver. But as was the case when The Masters was postponed, the schedule change has left the brand in a pickle. What do you do now? You could hold it for the U.S. ...

2020 Bentley Flying Spur Review: Superior comfort and performance

What can I say? It’s a Bentley. It’s lovely. The Bentley new Flying Spur is a luxury super sedan. It packs a larger engine than most sports cars, has four heavenly seats, and glides over the road like soap on a shower floor. This example costs $279,000, so I would expect nothing less. This sedan is supremely comfortable, and yet it packs a powerful punch. Bentley says the W12 engine lets it hit 207 mph though I had no reason to verify that claim. Going fast means arriving at a destination sooner...

Wilson WLabs Driver Hits USGA Conforming List

COVID-19 may have stalled this spring’s retail business, but OEM R&D teams are still hard at work. A new Wilson driver hit the USGA Conforming List this week, with the code name WLabs. All signs indicate this driver could fill a glaring hole in Wilson’s lineup. “We’ve been working to get drivers in play with our Tour players,” Wilson Golf Club Innovation Manager Jon Pergande tells MyGolfSpy. “We’re doing some testing with our guys with that club, and getting it on the USGA website means if they ...

SpaceX’s astronaut launch marks the dawn of the commercial human spaceflight industry

SpaceX on Saturday launched two NASA astronauts aboard its Crew Dragon spacecraft, and the accomplishment is a tremendous one for both the company and the U.S. space agency. At a fundamental level, it means that the U.S. will have continued access to the International Space Station, without having to rely on continuing to buy tickets aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft to do so. But it also means the beginning of a new era for the commercial space industry – one in which private companies and i...

2020 Lotus Evora GT Review: A thrilling, analog weekend racer

Why’s this on TechCrunch? We hear that occasionally when posting things outside of our general programming. Generally, there’s a tech hook; there isn’t here with this $100,000 2020 Lotus Evora GT. The Lotus Evora GT is supersized go-kart with nary an advanced technical feature. And I love it. While most cars are coming equipped with supercomputers, the lack of technical wizardry makes the 2020 Evora GT interesting, and that’s why it’s on TechCrunch. A modest v6 rests behind the driver. The st...

Tour Edge EXS Pro Metalwoods

It’s no secret that the golf industry generally struggles with standardization. From stiff shafts to rudimentary measurements, definitions vary from brand to brand. Hell, three of the largest manufacturers can’t agree on how long an inch is.  That said, you can be relatively sure any equipment release leveraging the “Pro” suffix, will exhibit similar characteristics. Specifically, we’re talking about forward center of gravity locations, deeper/taller faces, more compact heel-to-toe measurements,...

How to create the best at-home videoconferencing setup, for every budget

Your life probably involves a lot more videoconferencing now than it did a few weeks ago – even if it already did involve a lot. That’s not likely going to change anytime soon, so why not make the most of it? The average MacBook webcam can technically get the job done, but it’s far from impressive. There are a number of ways to up your game, however – by spending either just a little or a whole lot. Whether you’re just looking to improve your daily virtual stand-up, gearing up for presenting at ...

Uber is rolling out a series of changes to its ride-hailing and on-demand food delivery apps, beginning Monday, as cities and states lift stay-at-home orders prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Uber may use its selfie tech to verify drivers are wearing masks

When Uber rolled out its selfie system for drivers in 2016, the ride-hailing company was focused on preventing fraud. In the future, it could be used to ensure drivers are wearing a mask. Uber said earlier this week — CEO Dara Khosrowshahi reiterated today — that it is working through plans to require drivers and riders to wear face masks or face coverings as it prepares to ramp its ride-hailing business back up after being hobbled by the COVID-19 pandemic. The mask requirement will be iss...

PXG Proto Drivers (Limited Edition) – Available Now

Our theme of something in a time of mostly nothing continues with a limited release of PXG 0811 X Proto and 0811 X+ Proto drivers. Billed as actual prototypes (as opposed to finished version), both models are on the USGA conforming clubs list, so you’re good to go for any tournaments you plan to compete in this month…ugh.
