NHL Short Notes

THREE HARD LAPS * Dustin Brown joined rare company and became the second player in NHL history to score at least one goal in each of his 1,000th, 1,100th and 1,200th regular-season games.   * Christian Dvorak scored the first of four consecutive Arizona goals as the Coyotes erased a 3-0 deficit to stun the Ducks.   * Marc-Andre Fleury recorded his League-leading third shutout of the season (tied) and climbed the NHL’s all-time list. Reinvigorated Kings will try to keep win streak going against Blues

Coasting atop the wave of a four-game swell, the Kings will seek their fifth and possibly sixth consecutive victories on a swing through St. Louis with games against the Blues on Monday and Wednesday. Fresh off a two-game sweep of the Arizona Coyotes, the Kings’ veterans have been reinvigorated this season. Center Anze Kopitar is tied for eighth in scoring and sixth in assists league-wide. Winger Dustin Brown is in the top 20 for goals and tied for third in power-play goals, and defenseman Drew ...

Kings’ inexperience, poor execution lead to early KO in Vegas

Though the Kings played in Vegas on Friday, their first period was reminiscent of Mike Tyson’s first-round knockout of Michael Spinks in Atlantic City. Spinks lasted just 17 seconds, and the Kings fared only slightly better giving up the game’s first goal 50 seconds in, trailing 3-0 at the 10:40 mark of the period and ultimately falling 5-2 at T-Mobile Arena. Three Kings made their season debut: winger Martin Frk, forward Jaret Anderson-Dolan and defenseman Austin Strand, who made his NHL debut....

Kings’ Arthur Kaliyev scores in his NHL debut against Ducks

With each loss over the past three seasons, the chorus of Kings fans grew louder: Why aren’t they playing the kids? The answer, at least in one case, was “tonight.” Winger Arthur Kaliyev, whom the Kings selected with the No. 33 overall pick in the 2019 draft, made his NHL debut on Tuesday when the Kings hosted the Ducks. He wasted no time making an impact, scoring his first goal in the second period when he trailed the rush, crashed the net and scored on a rebound. Kaliyev, 19, helped his junior...

Layoff didn’t help Kings get healthy ahead of Ducks game

After a four-day layoff, the Kings will ramp their intensity back up against the Ducks on Tuesday night at Staples Center. It is a rare one-game engagement – most of the shortened 2021 schedule consists of two-game sets against the same opponent – and in contrast to the four consecutive games the teams will play against each other later in the season. Kings winger and alternate captain Dustin Brown said his focus in this and other initial meetings with opponents has been familiarizing himself wi...

Kings hit the road for back-to-back games in St. Louis

Coming off their first victory of the season, the Kings take their first road trip, beginning with a pair of games against the St. Louis Blues on Saturday and Sunday. Penalties inhibited the Kings on their season-opening four-game homestand, which saw them go 1-1-2 for four out of a possible eight points in the standings. They took 21 penalties across the four games, but accumulated more sensible infractions against Colorado in their 4-2 win Thursday. “There’s good penalties and there’s bad pena...

Kings prepare for two-game set against Avalanche after pair of OT losses

Coming off a pair of 4-3 overtime losses to Minnesota that would have made Xerox proud, the Kings are preparing for another two-game set. This time it’s with the Colorado Avalanche, whom they will host Tuesday and Thursday at Staples Center. “We’re gonna work on all facets of our game. We haven’t played in 300 days so (we need) a lot of work and in every area,” Coach Todd McLellan said after the second loss Saturday, adding that he also planned to address players individually Sunday in lieu of p...

Kings’ Dustin Brown reaches 300th goal milestone

The silver lining in the Kings’ season opener–which featured a blown two-goal lead and an overtime loss–was a milestone goal, No. 300, for winger Dustin Brown. Brown, who captained the Kings to Stanley Cups in 2012 and 2014, has been more known for his physical play, leadership and effortful example than his goal-scoring, but he has still managed to notch 300 goals. That mark stands as the 22nd most among American players and fourth among Americans who are active in the NHL. “You don’t stay in o...

L.A. Kings roster: Familiar faces anchor a team in transition

With plenty of distance between them and last season, the Kings take to the ice for the first time since March on Thursday night at Staples Center. As the 2020-21, er, 2021 season finally gets underway, here is a look at the Kings’ projected lineup in the early part of the season. FORWARDS Anze Kopitar The Kings’ franchise center and captain led the team in goals (21) and points (62) last season, despite the absence of a consistent producer on the wing. LA Kings preview: 4 key factors to the season

While the Kings have been quietly discussing their chances to return to the playoffs during their training camp, virtually every prognostication, simulation, betting odds and other projection has them missing the postseason for a third consecutive year. What will it take to reconcile internal and external expectations and defy the experts? Becoming a more efficient team within Todd McLellan’s speedy system will be a key, as last season the Kings frequently outshot opponents but much less frequen...

Kings start training camp with much to prove on the ice

Like so many others, the Kings are hoping 2021 is a markedly better year than 2020. They were back to work Thursday, beginning training camp 15 days before they kick off their season against the Minnesota Wild at Staples Center, more than 10 months after they last played due to the coronavirus pandemic and their failure to qualify for the expanded postseason field. “We’re all looking forward to midnight tonight. I don’t think things are going to change completely at 12:01, but it feels like a fr...

Anze Kopitar’s Career Milestones So Far

From winning the Stanley Cup twice in three seasons to being one of the worst teams in the NHL, the Los Angeles Kings haven’t seen a lot of consistency over the last few seasons. One exception to this is Anze Kopitar. Anze Kopitar (Amy Irvin / The Hockey Writers) Kopitar was drafted 11th overall, the number he would go on to use throughout his career, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. The now 33-year-old jumped into his first season in the NHL as just a teenager. In the 2006-07 season, h...

5 Greatest Moments in Kings History

In a city that once didn’t acknowledge the sport of hockey, the Los Angeles Kings etched themselves in the history books in more ways than one.  Among the many significant moments in Kings history, including the dynamic “Triple Crown Line” era and a pair of Stanley Cups, let’s reminisce on the five that greatly influenced the organization and southern California. 5 — “Miracle on Manchester” With the odds stacked against them, the 1981-82 Kings pulled off one of the greatest comebacks ...

Justice delayed: O.C. woman’s 1974 death reclassified from suicide to homicide

For nearly a half-century, a cloud hung over the grave of Linda Louise Cummings. Cummings, a nurse’s aide with aspirations of moving up in the medical field, was found nude with a clothesline knotted around her neck in her Santa Ana apartment in 1974. A coroner’s investigator concluded she committed suicide, a conclusion based mostly on gossip. The investigator later changed the cause of death to “undetermined,” which did little to ease the pain for Cummings’ family, who insisted she would never...

These tropical fruit trees and plants are thriving at a Southern California nursery

It’s amazing what you can do with a third of an acre of land. Take Alex Silber, for example. On a piece of ground this size, he is growing 52 exotic fruit trees, shrubs, and vines, 9 exotic herbs and spices, and 4 pitaya cactus or dragon fruit species — red, pink, yellow, and white, with the yellow one being the rarest and sweetest of the lot. He is growing these mostly tropical species not only for his own enjoyment but to sell to the public as well. You can visit him on the grounds of the Papa...
