Megadroughts in arid central Asia delayed the cultural exchange along the proto-Silk Road

Over the past four millennia the main corridor of ancient cultural dispersal passed through Arid Central Asia; historically, this marked the central artery of the Silk Road. However, little is known about the effects of hydroclimatic changes in this region on ancient human populations. An international team of researchers have identified a 640-year megadrought (5820-5180 a BP) impacting the desert oases of this region and hindering earlier cultural diffusion between East and West Asia.

As NBA formulates All-Star plans, are there reservations to go?

Frank Vogel might be one of the lucky ones: If he doesn’t want to go anywhere for the All-Star break next month, he doesn’t have to. By virtue of a rule preventing coaching staffs from being represented in back-to-back All-Star games, the Lakers coaches (who coached Team LeBron in 2020) won’t be back under the proposal to stage an All-Star Game in Atlanta on March 7. But the deal – which is still being worked out between the league, the National Basketball Players Association and the relevant TV...

Lakers’ LeBron James has ‘zero excitement’ for potential NBA All-Star Game

If the NBA does approve an actual All-Star Game this year, LeBron James will go. He just won’t be happy about it. “I have zero energy and zero excitement about an All-Star Game this year,” the 16-time All-Star told reporters Thursday night following the Lakers’ victory over the Denver Nuggets. “I don’t even understand why we’re having an All-Star Game.” The deal – which is still being worked out between the league, the National Basketball Players Association and the relevant TV partners – does m...

Sitting on billions, Catholic dioceses collected $1.5 billion in COVID-19 taxpayer aid

When the coronavirus forced churches to close their doors and give up Sunday collections, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte turned to the federal government’s signature small business relief program for more than $8 million. The diocese’s headquarters, churches and schools landed the help even though they had roughly $100 million of their own cash and short-term investments available last spring, financial records show. When the cash catastrophe church leaders feared didn’t materialize,...

Making sense of the Lakers’ lineups and minutes shuffle

Editor’s note: This is the Friday January 29 edition of the Purple & Bold Lakers newsletter from reporter Kyle Goon. To receive the newsletter in your inbox, sign up here. LeBron James doesn’t like to admit when aspects of the game are not coming to him as quickly as he’d like. Early on, he downplayed questions about whether he was physically prepared after a short offseason. He artfully dodges questions about how he keeps his mind sharp. On Thursday night, he went so far as to make the (somew...

The Ace Hotel Kyoto: Japanese Design Meets Bohemian Style

We have yet to meet a Commune-designed Ace Hotel that we didn’t like. Their latest collaboration has yielded one of our favorite projects yet: Ace Hotel Kyoto, the hipster hospitality chain’s first ever outpost in Asia. The architect behind the 213-room hotel is Kengo Kuma, who designed the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Stadium. Part new build, part historic structure, it features multiple courtyards and gardens and a distinctly Japanese facade that references the traditional wooden houses (machiya) of Kyo...

LeBron James’ early case for (and against) another MVP award

Editor’s note: This is the Friday, Jan. 22 edition of the Purple & Bold Lakers newsletter from reporter Kyle Goon. To receive the newsletter in your inbox, sign up here. It was a bold move, the kind that LeBron James is famous for: He told the media on Thursday night, with a straight face, that the 2020 MVP race in which he only got 16 first-place votes didn’t matter to him anymore. As if anyone would forget September, when he publicly declared (to some startled media members) that the results...

Does the James Harden trade help the Nets catch the Lakers?

Editor’s note: This is the Wednesday, Jan. 13 edition of the Purple & Bold Lakers newsletter from reporter Kyle Goon. To receive the newsletter in your inbox, sign up here. A 117-100 drubbing by the Lakers was the final straw in a frayed relationship for Houston and James Harden, who said Tuesday night, “I don’t think it can be fixed.” So the Rockets finally made the blockbuster trade that Harden was reportedly asking for, sending him to Brooklyn for  a package that includes a ton of draft cap...

6 reasons the Rams have beaten expectations this season

When quarterback Jared Goff talked about proving pessimists wrong in the Rams’ playoff victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday, it was a rare admission that NFL players care what outsiders think of them. “All week we were told how good they are, and how we snuck into the playoffs and were (at a disadvantage) coming to their home place,” Goff said after the upset. “We were able to come up here and beat them in their own place. It feels really good.” Win or lose against the Green Bay Packers...

COVID-19 vaccines are making their way around the world, but global immunity is still far off

Mass vaccination campaigns are being rolled out around the world as governments look for ways to contain the spread of COVID-19. Pfizer-BioNTech, Oxford-AstraZeneca, Sputnik V, and Sinopharm are among the authorized vaccines being distributed in multiple countries. But Russia, India, and China have been criticized for rushing their vaccine approval processes, and some people remain skeptical about getting inoculated. As wealthier nations expand their immunization efforts, many developing countr...

Substitute for Eggs in Pancakes

The consumption of eggs is known earlier in parts of South-East Asia and parts of East and India since 3000BC, and they were consumed by direct collection from nature. According to Egyptian and Chinese records, fowls were laying eggs for man in 1400BC, while Europe has had domesticated hens since 600BC. The chicken was probably domestic for its eggs before 7500BCE. The chickens arrived in Greece around 800BCE, where the quail had been the primary source of egg. The word “egg” tracks its name ba...

USC was to play UCLA in the Pac-12 men’s basketball regular-season finale at the Galen Center on Saturday. The Lakers were to get another shot at the Clippers that Sunday at Staples Center, after losing the first two meetings and having the third one postponed in the wake of Kobe Bryant’s death.
