Secretive Palantir Technologies is preparing to go public. But behind the cloak-and-dagger image, insiders and investors say, it's struggled to build a steady revenue model.

Palantir Technologies, one of the oldest unicorns in Silicon Valley, will face new levels of scrutiny when it finally reveals its financial information ahead of a public listing expected early this fall. The Peter Thiel-backed startup built its reputation as a secret purveyor of government spy technologies, supplying near-magical tools to law enforcement and military clients around the globe. But behind the scenes, Palantir has struggled to build the type of steady, recurring revenue model tha...

With technology to perfect product pitches in digital marketplaces Pattern raises $52 million

Pattern, a Lehi, Utah-based reseller that offers large and small brands a way to optimize their sales on marketplaces like Amazon, eBay, Walmart and Google Shopping, has raised $52 million in growth funding, the company said. The money, from Ainge Advisory and KSV Global, will be used to expand the company’s business worldwide. Founded in 2013, the e-commerce reseller uses analytics to lock down market specific keywords in advertising and has managed to reach a run-rate that should see it hit $5...

Secretive data-analytics firm Palantir Technologies has thrived in the shadows, but a coming IPO could poke holes in its most valuable asset — its reputation

How old 14 of the world's richest people were when they first became billionaires

Not all billionaires join the three comma club at the same age. Bill Gates may be richer than Mark Zuckerberg, but the Facebook CEO became a billionaire when he was nearly a decade younger. Oprah Winfrey became a billionaire at age 49. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. When Bill Gates became a billionaire in 1987 at 31, he was the youngest person to ever join the three comma club. In 2008, Mark Zuckerberg took that title when he reached billionaire status at 23.  But not all...

Cringely Predicts the U.S. Can't Stop WeChat

An anonymous reader quotes long-time technology pundit Robert Cringely: Forty-five days from now, we're told, President Trump will shut down TikTok and WeChat. TikTok, maybe, but WeChat? Impossible... Trump has a chance of taking down TikTok, the short form video sharing site, because that service is dependent on advertising. He can force the app out of U.S. app stores (though not out of foreign ones) and he can cut off the flow of ad dollars... at least those dollars that flow through America...

FTC Commissioners Are Upset About Section 230; Though It's Not At All Clear Why (techdirt)

Another day, another bunch of nonsense about Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. The Senate Commerce Committee held an FTC oversight hearing yesterday, with all five commissioners attending via video conference (kudos to Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter who attended with her baby strapped to her -- setting a great example for so many working parents who are struggling with working from home while also having to manage childcare duties!). Section 230 came up a few times, though I'm perpl...

LivingPackets hopes to nurture a circular economy with its smart parcels

More than ever before, people are getting life’s essentials delivered — good news for Amazon, but bad news for the environment, which must bear the consequences of the resulting waste. LivingPackets is a Berlin-based startup that aims to replace the familiar cardboard box with a smarter alternative that’s smarter, more secure, and possibly the building block of a new circular economy. The primary product created by LivingPackets is called The Box, and it’s just that: a box. But not just any box....

An artist's sourcebook

My current project is an artist's sourcebook, so it has a lot of images and relatively much less text to it. (Example) I've been doing the drawing in a vector design program called Xara Designer Pro, which is pretty good at doing layout for print and exporting to PDF. However, the greater the number of pages (160 so far!) the more resources it takes up to do the drawing, so I have resorted to splitting the book into individual two-page spreads while I work with it. Eventually I want to make it ...

How to manage the future of work and reduce the employment gap

Despite recent surges in the stock market and the promising jobs numbers in the wake of the pandemic, the recovery has been quite uneven, hurting Black and Hispanic workers more than white employees, for example. The disparate effects of both the pandemic and nationwide protests and unrest reinforce the importance of addressing the widening national employment gap between the Haves and Have-Nots. The contrast between professional, educated, new-economy workers, and the rest of the workforce has ...

PayPal's CFO outlines ambitious plans to become your virtual wallet — including a potential partnership with the likes of Amazon or Alibaba

PayPal has been an independent company for five years since it was spun off from eBay, which acquired the payments platform in 2002. The company has been red-hot in 2020, with its stock more than doubling since mid-March.  John Rainey, PayPal's CFO, told Business Insider the payments giant wants to do more than process payments for other c...

While Our Country Is Engulfed By Urgent Must-Solve Problems, Congress Is Working Hard to Burn Down Section 230

This post will be unusually blunt about my disenchantment with the state of our country, a topic I don’t normally discuss on the blog. Some of you will not like this post. I expect my next post will feel more normal; but if you conclude that you no longer wish to read my blog, I thank you for your past readership. In case it isn’t obvious, I am voting, without reservation, for Biden in November. I know he has said he wants to revoke Section 230, immediately. We need Section 230, but we need a ch...

PayPal's CFO explains why the payment giant is going against the grain and betting big on QR codes as the new way to pay in-store

PayPal is betting that US shoppers will start using QR codes at checkout. Last week, it announced that CVS Pharmacy would be the first national chain to offer PayPal's QR payments in-store. PayPal's CFO John Rainey told Business Insider that when the pandemic hit, PayPal reprioritized its QR code project, which it launched in May. While QR payments are prevalent in markets like China, they've yet to catch on in the US. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Contactless payments a...

The Death of the Priest Class

Over at The New York Times they put up an article about the fact that white men are starting to see the rise of women (Ugh!) and minorities (Good Lord!)    The piece, entitled "In Publishing, ‘Everything Is Up for Change’" says that "A wave of deaths and retirements prompted publishers to name new leaders. Now the industry is in a rare moment of transformation that promises to influence the books put out into the world."  Matt Mullenix asks how institutions like newspaper, book, and mag...

Interesting video about eBay scams - for buyers and sellers

I don't use eBay as much as I used to, but one of my daughters uses it frequently to buy and sell Japanese collectibles. So far she hasn't been scammed, but eBay is well known for being full of sleazy cons. This MakeUseOf video quickly goes through 10 Common scams on eBay. The scam that stood out to me was the "buyer claims broken item" scam. It happens when you ship an item, say a Nintendo Switch, to the buyer and the buyer then claims the item is broken, sending a photo to eBay of a differ...

Walmart Marketplace seller additions surge following Shopify deal, up 3x from January

Walmart’s recent partnership with Shopify to expand its online marketplace appears to already be paying off.  The retailer in June announced it was opening its marketplace to Shopify’s small business sellers with the goal of onboarding 1,200 new sellers by the end of 2020. Following the Shopify announcement, the marketplace added 3,000 more sellers in June and is expected to exceed 3,600 in July, according to a new report from research firm Marketplace Pulse. That’s triple how many sellers it wa...
