New hope for cancer patients: Studies identity whether you will respond to chemotherapy or not

Using radiomics, two new studies identified whether patients would respond to chemotherapy or not. This breakthrough occurred by investigating tissue around the tumor, instead of only looking at the tumor itself. This could lead to the cessation of much suffering for patients that will not respond to chemo. None We can thank warfare for one of the most important medical discoveries of the 20th century. An article published in The NY Times in 1946 sums up a fascinating study on the usage of "nitr...

Our Planet Is NOT a Fragile Snowflake

Opinion Our Planet Is NOT a Fragile Snowflake USA – -( Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claims that “the world is going to end in 12 years if we don't address climate change.” The people at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change agree, saying that to avoid some of the most devastating impacts of climate change, the world must slash carbon emissions by 45 percent by 2030 and completely decarbonize by 2050. Such dire warnings are not new. In 1970, Harvard University biology p...

‘Is it OK to still have children?’

‘Is it OK to still have children?’ Is it morally permissible to have children? That question – which should have gone out with “What’s your sign?” or “Who shot J.R.?” in the 1980s – has come roaring back in a United States in which the birthrate continually hits new lows. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez asked the question in a video she posted on social media this weekend. AOC fears that children will degrade the environment through increasing our collective carb...

Love, Actually: Why ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ is The Best Christmas Movie

‘Tis the season for Grinches and Gremlins, for leg lamps and Clark Griswold, and for the annual debate over the quality (or lack thereof) of Love, Actually – an argument that has grown more boring (and annoying) than the annual declaration that Die Hard is actually a Christmas movie. But in this house, ’tis the season for Stanley Kubrick; be it the wintry and claustrophobic familial terror of The Shining , or the harrowing yuletide sex odyssey taken by Tom Cruise in Eyes Wide Shut ...

The Top 25 Films of 2018

My favorite end-of-the-year review of movies is always David Ehrlich’s video countdown of the top 25 best films. In this year’s review, I was surprised to see Annihilation on the list (I thought it was ok?) and also delighted by the high ranking of Paddington 2. Eighth Grade, The Favourite, and First Reformed all deservedly made the list, along with Mission: Impossible - Fallout, which I really liked. Would have liked to have seen Black Panther on there though. Ehrlich shared the best momen...

Top Census Scientist Grilled On If Citizenship Question Will Skew The Census

NEW YORK – It was another long day of testimony for the Census Bureau’s top scientist in a federal trial in Manhattan. A key issue in the case is whether it will discourage immigrants from participating on the census, and cause an undercount that diminish the political power of those communities. Census Bureau official John Abowd’s second full day on the witness stand was focused on whether the effect of adding the citizenship question can be mitigated by follow-up efforts was the focus of th...

Remodeling 101: Modern Plaster Walls, Six Ways

Have you found yourself staring at walls of late? We know we have. That’s because plaster in its many transfixing guises is making a big comeback. Interiors finished with plaster have a depth and luminosity that shifts with the light, quietly transforming the look and feel of a house. And there’s no paint required: Left in its raw state, plaster is an environmentally sound natural material—breathable, and free of chemicals and VOCs. True, plaster walls are more expensive than painted drywall; th...

Judge Merrillee Ehrlich, a Broward County circuit judge, resigned after she was accused of repeatedly snapping at a defendant in a wheelchair in the courtroom. On April 15, Sandra Faye Twiggs, 59, a woman who suffered from asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, also called COPD, appeared before the court presided by Ehrlich for having a feud with her 19-year-old daughter over a fan during which she scratched her teen daughter, Miami Herald reported.

Paul Ehrlich: Collapse Of Civilization Is Imminent

The world’s optimum population is less than two billion people – 5.6 billion fewer than on the planet today, he argues, and there is an increasing toxification of the entire planet by synthetic chemicals that may be more dangerous to people and wildlife than climate change. Ehrlich also says an unprecedented redistribution of wealth is […]

States Want Their Own Net Neutrality Rules, But How Will This Impact Business?

Several states are trying to pass their own respective versions of “net neutrality” rules after the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in December of 2017 repealed a prior agency administration’s mandate to impose them unilaterally. States Joining the Battle for Net Neutrality By trying to enact internet regulations, the various pending or embryonic legislative proposals would almost certainly create legal battles in local courts, and potentially higher tribunals. Many argue that since t...

How Warren Buffett Won His Multi-Million Dollar Long Bet

This year, Warren Buffett won his multi-million dollar, decade-long Long Bet. F rom the preacher warning that the day of reckon ing is nigh, to the sports analyst  prognosticating  about the outcome of next week’s big game, to the fortune teller calling for hard times in Mercury retrograde, predictions are pervasive, but accountability is rare. That the vast majority of predictions fail to come true is hardly a deterrent; we tend to remember the few that do. This is a story about a p...

No, Women Don't Need To Step Up — But The Men Who Run The Grammys Do

The Grammys truly bungled their attempt to be part of the conversation around equality and representation for women this year. First, there was no coordination with Time's Up, which organized protests at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, to help raise money for their legal fund or give attendees an opportunity to rally behind achieving equality for women in the industry. So, a group of 14 women who are mid-level music industry executives pulled together and formed Voices in Entertainment, and s...

The top 25 films of 2017

Nothing makes me want to quit my job and just watch movies all day than David Ehrlich’s annual video countdowns of the year’s best movies. Although I’m still a little irritated at him for leaving Arrival off of last year’s list, I’m looking forward to seeing Phantom Thread, The Post, Columbus, Lady Bird (which has been difficult to come by living in a rural area), and many others from this year’s list. At Indiewire, Ehrlich explains his picks. I wasn’t as keen on Baby Driver and Get Out as ...

Steal This Look: A Hudson Valley DIY Kitchen by a Stealth Design Star

Designer Deborah Ehrlich favors deconstruction over renovation and reduction over decoration. Her 1722 Hudson Valley farmhouse is proof: Ehrlich opened up the floor plan, exposed beams and plaster walls, sanded the floor, relocated the kitchen to a room originally used to store wood, and then, she says, “just left it.” The relocated kitchen is now part of a clapboard addition to the stone house, and is kitted out with handbuilt plywood countertops, a vintage utility sink, and a modified Viking o...

Macron’s African statement ignores human ingenuity

Macron’s African statement ignores human ingenuity A French media outlet has captured an otherwise unnoticed comment from French President Emmanuel Macron that Africa is overpopulated. Don't Worry, Priyanka Chopra's Dramatic Train Didn't Make It To The After Parties

Even if you didn't catch Priyanka Chopra's arrival at this year's Met Gala, odds are you caught the highlights on Twitter. The actress, who attended the event with Ralph Lauren, arrived on the early side of the red carpet, but managed to keep everyone talking pretty much through the evening thanks to the extra-extra-long train on her custom trench gown, which required some assistance in getting up the museum's steps. Now, there were plenty of looks from this year's gala that weren't exactly opt...
